ndbeckner1
for me that is. My plan is to get my big freezer empty and sell it off. My reasoning is two fold; one, should we ever lose power, I wouldn't have to worry about food in my freezer, and I figure, even when I get a good deal at the store, I am paying money each month for the electricity to keep it. My thoughts are that it would be better to just can my good deals on meat, veggies, etc, and buy dry goods I can store w/o refigeration. I want to take the money I get from selling the freezer and use it for preps. It is a slow process to convert over to just my refrigerator freezer, but I will do it. It is amazing how little I am having to stre in my freezer since Istarted making everything from scratch. I used to go to the bread thrift store and buy up a months worth of various bread products, now I make my own and so I have a wide open freezer. The only thing I would use it for at this point would be meat sales, and like I said, I can can those. Link to comment
Josephine
Is it an upright? If you don't think you could get much money for it, you could just unplug it and use it as shelving. That's what I'm doing with my in laws old old freezer. Link to comment
Homemaker
Or, you could do as some people are... bury it in the ground and use it to store garden produce over the winter. It's a little root cellar. Link to comment
Fullpantry
Homemaker - never thought of using an old freezer for a root cellar. Good idea!! Just open the door and there's your cellar. I imagine it would keep most varmits out - those doors can be pretty heavy. Link to comment
Canned Nerd
Make sure compressor, electronics and freon gases are removed so the soil is not contaminated. Link to comment
Homemaker
Right ,canned Nerd. And also, as always, be sure if a child were to climb in that they could get back out!! Some older freezers and fridges have trapped children. Link to comment
