snapshotmiki
Not sure if I spelled that right or not but the type that I cut food for my new dehydrator. Anyone have suggestions for what type and where to buy it from? Nothing electric please, thinking ahead. And storage is always an issue for me. Also am considering the Pump n Vac as it is hand operated. Any input will be appreciated as I am new to this and want to do it as right as I can afford anyway. The dehydrator I got from mom11 is the Nesco 700 watt square with 4 trays. I can hardly wait to get started!!!!!! Link to comment
themartianchick
I had never heard of the term and had to Google for it. I don't own one, though I do have a Nesco dehydrator. I just use a knife to cut everything. Here is a photo in case someone else didn't have a clue as to what a mandoline looks like... http://www.google.co...ed=0CFsQ8gIwBg# and http://www.google.co...ed=0CFUQ8gIwBA# Link to comment
WormGuy
I am like the Quail Flockmistress, I use a knife. I am sure the mandolin is faster tho. John Link to comment
gofish
A mandolin is a little hard to get the hang of. If your not carefull a finger tip can be in danger. I got mine at Goodwill I dont know the brand name but I like using it. I like using mine but if I had not found mine for a few dollers at Goodwill I don't think I would have gotten one. Skagitgal
I have the 'good grips' brand that has a folding stand, and on board storage, adjustable cutting width. It is great. They are very sharp. Sharp enough to require 4 stitches in your little finger, if you try to shortcut the safety grip for holding the food secure. Just trust me on this! Link to comment
Leanna1017
We have a Pampered Chef one that I bought years ago. Honestly - it was a waste of money considering how little I use it. It's a pain to clean and it's not stable so I have injured myself with it more than once. A knife is so much easier. If you really want one I have seen some inexpensive items on QVC that also has a container to collect the sliced food. Link to comment

themartianchick
Thanks everyone! I think I will check on ebay but not look for one retail. Does anyone have the pump n vac or pump n seal? for a food saver? I have a Foodsaver/Freshsaver thingy that can be used with the bags, but I don't think that it vacuums, just seals....Lemme go look at it. I've had it for a couple of months and haven't tried it. Someone posted a link on another forum where you could get one for around $3. It only came with a couple of bags and I haven't ordered anymore. It was one of my "prep on a budget months", if you know what I mean. Don't necessarily dismiss the retail options! My $3 deal was found on the manufacturer's website. Link to comment

themartianchick
Martian Chick! Do you know what the website is? the one yours came from? This is the link that I followed: http://www.foodsaver.com/404.aspx Unfortunately, the deal price is no longer there...It has been a couple of months since I got it. If you click on "Specials" at the top of the page, you may be able to find something that you might want or need, though. Here is the one that I got for $3.60: http://www.foodsaver.com/Product.aspx?id=c&cid=1152&pid=8404 Link to comment
