  1. I really like the snow. I don't like to drive in it. But when I look out my windows across our ten acres here,it's very beautiful. My children can go outside and entertain themselves for hours in it and laugh together. Which is something teenagers don't do very often in any situation. I love to smell the fires burning. I like Christmas lights. And as winter sets in I like to relax with all of the seed catalogs and plan my garden for spring and it's promise of new life.

    More reading, sewing, quilting, and baking....

  2. I am all for wanting to hear that Chocolate Pecan pie recipe too!!!!

    Georgene as soon as I get the chance I will let you know about Carla's visit.. It was mostly concerning the eventual run out of petroleum (sp) and how that affects us as homesteaders and the whole world for that part. And the need to prepare for such a tragedy..

  3. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We are headed closer to the Windy City (Chicago) this morning! We only got a skiff of snow here but the hubby says that in the next town up they had lots more! Since we have to travel up that doesn't surprise me! Ya'll take care.. Blessings!

    When I was a young turkey, new to the coop,

    My big brother Tom took me out on the stoop,

    Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow,

    And he told me there was something that I had to know;

    His look and his tone I will always remember,

    When he told me of the horrors of.... Black November;

    "Come about August, now listen to me,

    Each day you'll get six meal instead of just three",

    "And soon you'll be thick, where once you were thin,

    And you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin";

    "And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed,

    In will burst the farmer's wife, and hack off your head";

    "Then she'll pluck out all your feathers so you're bald 'n pink,

    And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lying' in the sink";

    "And then comes the worst part" he said not bluffing,

    "She'll spread your cheeks and pack your rear with stuffing".

    Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat,

    I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat,

    And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked,

    I'd have to lay low and remain overlooked;

    I began a new diet of nuts and granola,

    High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola;

    And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes,

    I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes;

    I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half,

    And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed;

    But 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath,

    As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death

    And sure enough when Black November rolled around,

    I was the last turkey left in the entire compound;

    So now I'm a pet in the farmer's wife's lap;

    I haven't a worry, so I eat and I nap;

    She held me today, while sewing and humming,

    And smiled at me and said "Christmas is coming."

    We have invited another family to come over and go with us. So they didn't have the expense of driving themselves. They are bringing breakfast! Well I am cooking it but they are bringing it! LOL... Anyone having Thanksgiving this weekend? I have a turkey thawing I thought about doing a small one for my family tomorrow after church.. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

  7. I can't wait to get into this site! I love the civil war era as well as reading on the depression era.. I know people who lived through the depression and man the things they taught me! Like saving every piece of tomoato you can by cutting out only the bad spots. And paring a potato very thinly so you don't lose any of the potato.. Saving everything, newspapers, styrafoam you name it.. Although I don't save styrafoam. But I reuse papers to start the fires and I save all my dryer lint.. Eventually to make home made fire starters! Thanks for this site!!
