Happy Groundhog Day! A new commercial from JEEP.
Midnightmom replied to Midnightmom's topic in The Sunporch
I should have done this when I first posted the commercial. Why "duck" a jeep??? https://lancasteronline.com/news/local/duck-and-wave-a-look-at-why-jeep-owners-put-ducks-on-other-jeeps-and/article_0fc9f098-f54c-11eb-900f-4bf2dd5471e3.html -
Happy Groundhog Day! A new commercial from JEEP.

I am sorry to hear this about your son. I have a lot of those same issues, BUT, I did not take the jab nor any of the follow-up ones for the new variations/changes in the virus. Political opinion to follow.................. I have become convinced that TPTB allowed Trump to be elected because they knew this pandemic was coming, and they also knew that he would be unconventional in his approach to getting a vaccine pushed through in record time. I belive "they" also knew that many of his supporters would trust said vaccines, and once that mission was accomplished they had no more use for him............................. What I don't understand is why he keeps pointing to this accomplishment as if it was the greatest thing ever as it totally morphed into the most awful thing ever foisted on Americans - especially those who "dared" to speak out against it and even suggested that were safer alternative methods for treatment. But, I am "afraid" that I am -
For anyone interested in the FoodSaver jar sealers: The regular mouth sealer is notorious for not working correctly, unless.............. you use 2 lids! The first one goes in the correct direction for sealing the jar, the second one is inverted. Then you run the machine as "normal." Many people have found that this "hack" works just fine. @GoatLady This info is for you - if you are still here that it is.

Thank you for you input ladies. I asked about watching the video because she does reference a USDA "master canner" by name in the video. -
Is your food ruined??? (pressure canning "problem")

@Virginia @euphrasyne I'm curious: Did either of you watch the video or did you just go by the pictures - (which are screen captures from the end of the video)??? -
Is it an induction stovetop? They work by magnetism so any pots or pans you use have to be made of iron or at least have a certain amount of iron in them. I imagine there may also be a "weight limit" per burner??? Propane burners are used by many canners, BUT, you have to know what the BTU limit is for your CANNER, not necessarily the output of the stove being used. A lot of these set-up are located outside, on a porch etc, and care is taken to make sure there is a wind shield in place to prevent the flame from fluctuating and causing uneven temp shifts.

I was in Winco today and they had 5lb bags of boneless/skinless chicken breast for $5 per bag! I got four of them. Guess I have a canning session in my immediate future.

If anyone preserves olives or cherries or even grapes, here is a handy-dandy little tool that you can find at the Dollar Tree for pitting them! It is a "Cherry Pitter" that is made by Chef'n. I have a few lids of theirs I bought a few years ago for making ferments and I really like them, so I'm pretty sure you will like this product also. (BTW - the images are screen caps from YT channel called "Vivian Tries." You can watch her demo there, and I am sure you will want to subscribe to her channel because she is so much fun to watch.

Flavored Syrups for coffee, ice cream, desserts, or ....?
Midnightmom replied to kappydell's topic in Kitchen Recipes
For those of you who do not want to use sugar (for whatever reason) to create these syrups, watch this video and learn how to make a SUGAR FREE simple syrup that you can add those flavoring ingredients to. Please note - you must use ALLULOSE for two reasons: Allulose browns (carmelizes) like table sugar does Erythritol will crystalize (get gritty) when it cools From Victoria's Keto Kitchen She also has a recipe for "HONEY" here. -
Dare I say, this is better than the Budweiser commercials??? --------------------- "Jeep's Extended Bill Murray 'Groundhog Day' Super Bowl Ad And Behind The Scenes Footage From The Production Of The Commercial. Bill Murray agreed to reprise the iconic role for his first-ever commercial, and homage/quasi-sequel to Groundhog Day. Jeep Fans and Bill Murray Fans Both Will Enjoy This Ad For Years To Come!" (Sonny and Cher "I Got You Babe" Plays Throughout the Ad.)

disposing of jars with failed seals?
Midnightmom replied to Midnightmom's topic in Preserving the Harvest
I had also posted this question to the "UCCE Master Food Preservers of Sacramento County." https://www.facebook.com/UCCEMFPOFSACRAMENTO/ This is the reply: Asked for more particulars................. Put the rings back on the jars and boil for 20 minutes? Then empty the contents into another container for disposal, but keep the jars for further use? (No garbage disposal; live in an apt so can't bury; can only toss in building's dumpster.) Reply: Sounds like a messy job. ETA: Found this on the National Center for Home Food Preservation website: I also wanted to add this. I had also sent an email to the same group - wasn't sure which reply would be the quickest. This is the email I received. As you can see, it references the info that I had just found on the USDA site. In my (requested) reply I attached a screen shot of the answer received (see above) from the other member. I thought they might need to "get on the same page" about this important topic! -
disposing of jars with failed seals?
Midnightmom replied to Midnightmom's topic in Preserving the Harvest
Our dumpsters get picked up on Tues & Sat. I suppose I should just dump the contents of the jars and put it in the trash pick-up for one of those two days. I wasn't sure about the safety of disposing it in the trash as there is no way to know about botulism, etc, although I did know to not put it through a (non-existant) garbage disposal or to flush it down the toilet. Would putting some bleach into the bags with the contents be a good idea? I am somewhat worried about dumpster divers getting their hands on anything that was tossed into the trash. -
I did an inventory of my jars last week - not just to know how many of what I had, but also to check the seals. Turns out I have 6 pint jars of meats that the seal failed on. How do I safely dispose of those jars???

@Littlesister I am sorry you are having so much trouble w/ your grandson. I hope you "stick to your guns" when it comes to enforcing the rules you establish. As to the cigarette smell: if his mom is a smoker she will not notice any smell as she is used to it. Regarding the, "If mom doesn't smell it, it doesn't exist" comment, sounds like you have no back up from her, so I wouldn't count on her being in your corner for any other problems/issues that arise with him. I am kinda' sorta' in the same boat with my middle son. We have been estranged for several years due to some behaviors on his part. He has been contacting me recently about wanting to reconcile, and I am a bit hesitant, but I don't want to freeze him out if there really have been some behavioral changes on his part. I am proceeding with much caution, even some trepidation on my part. We shall have to see how it goes....................one day a a time.

What are you canning today? Part 8
Midnightmom replied to Darlene's topic in In The Kitchen-The Heart Of Our Home
As a Type2 Diabetic beans are not a part of my diet . . . although I do have some canned pinto and kidney beans to add to chili, etc, if I have to. Keeping glucose under control is infinately more impt than having "calories" for consumption because elevated glucose levels cause much havoc on the body in many many ways. -
What are you canning today? Part 8
Midnightmom replied to Darlene's topic in In The Kitchen-The Heart Of Our Home
I was watching a vid on Sutton's Daze just yesterday. It hit me like a ton of bricks that I would need 365 jars (pint size because it's just me) of various meats for a one year supply! 110 jars of chicken 110 jars of beef 110 jars of pork (and other variety meats) 55 jars of fish (tuna, salmon, etc) That equals 30 dozen jars! I thought I was doing good to have 2 doz jars of beef & chicken in the pantry! Wake up-MnM!!! I'm not sure I have the space for that many jars, plus also have enough empty jars on hand to be able to jar up what's in the freezer it I had to! Part of my resistance to putting up that much meat is that being Keto, my variety of recipe usage is restricted by not using pasta or potatoes in the recipes I would use to make meals. Plus, eating soups and casseroles all of the time (anyway) is not exactly incentivising.
