  1. It all sounds delicious. As to drying apples, how thick should one slice the rings ? I have to dehydrate since I do not have canning equipment, but I want alot of my food portable anyway, so dehydration for now. Also, I want it really dry, what texture should the apple slices be when considered totally dry?
  2. i used a bit more than one pint of seashells on a pencil holder of a glass jar, using a glue gun to secure the shells. Added the rafia on top. Maybe I will make some more! Colored tissue and those foam cut outs like stars and suns and such can also be useful. Stashing them in the kids rooms might dissuade a robber... they would tend to look more in parents room, office, den, at the computer site in your home.... You could roll alot of bills into a jam jar size pencil keeper. I covered mine entirely and you cannot see it in at all.
  3. can applesauce be frozen in plastic containers?
  4. Thanks for the ideas ladies. I like the idea of refacing a comforter with new material. I can do that! Loved the tin lid wall idea too.
  5. I have to giggle about the girls qualifying as 1st class Boy Scouts. I too, as a girl could easily do many of the Boy Scout badges and my dad even wrote a couple articles, one of which made it to Life magazine when I was in my early teens. My own son was Order of the Arrow and would have gotten Eagle Scout with his troop in northern California but he wanted to finish highschool with his Dad in GA at the time. But he has always continued to be very motivated and went from enlisted to the naval academy and became a Marine officer. He now is on terminal leave ( even if his cell phone finally died), and is going to become a teacher of history and probably English, as well as work further down the line to become a Ph.D. professor at college level in history and also a coach at collegiate level later on. ( Right now I just hope he gets his masters ok for teaching period! ) But no matter what, he's not afraid of long term hard work.... and he might be a redneck, cause he likes the South!

  7. B names : Berg, possibly Berglund C names in my family: Collett ( Norwegian/French beginnings), Campbell D names Dusoblonski, Dusablon Polish and French lines
  8. Bealadybug, putting duct tape on teeth to remove them... Do you mean that for childrens baby teeth, or well set adult teeth as well ( if need be in an emergency?)

  10. Ok, my family is one big maze. The only A name I can offer at this time in my lineage is because it's from a second husband. Alexander.... his lineage goes back to the original plantation in the very early 1600's , in Maryland. He arrived with 3 African slaves, by way of Scotland of course. In 1700, his whole family moved south to Ablemarle county area and Dare County, and up until my ex's daddy was dead when Ray turned 7, from Cancer, they had possession of the plantation home. After Charles, his father died, the plantation home eventually became state owned and his sister ran the showings for visitors. Ray and his brother Earl, and their mother, moved to a tiny home in the middle of a cabbage field, and his mother raised them alone. They had no electricity for a long time and he said he would walk by Army guarded bunkers to get home from school. He grew up with little, and was a hoarder of weird things. He grew up with a depression mentality ( Yes he is older than me). Of course he deserted me so I live singly, with good reason I guess. My First hubby has a Mac type surname so will wait on that one. I cannot think of any other A surnames in my family tree or my son's who has his fathers lineage as well as mine.
  11. I guess i will find out if we have no lemon juice by the time I get to Walmart in Plattsburgh on Tuesday. Will look at local grocers tomorrow though.

  13. It is said you get more of the omega 3 in the tuna if you buy it with oil packing. So it helps those with cholesterol difficulties more than the water packed tuna.
  14. I found some inexpensive mounted grow lights at wallyworld. I hope to pick some up early in August. They were about 3 ft. long I think, for only 8 bucks apiece. And if they were not bright enough, I can use them as spare lighting in the kitchen since those ceiling lights ( flourescents) are getting pretty worn out in these old apartments. Well, I learned a few things about grow light systems. You want to have them quite close to the leaves of the plants, and I want to rig a frame I can adjust the height of the lights and basic positions I figure I would need. It would be better than nothing! The other thing I need to do is outwit my cat when it comes to potting soil! . I think clear plastic on top of the soil with a spot for the plant to grow out of will work if I pin it all down. and...... I just brought home two spider plant babies and this can help clean the air inside my place. I think the grow lights have a broader UV spectrum than regular flourescent lights. One reason I liked these lights I saw was that the mounts were pretty solid looking and thats important when I am jockeying around a crowded, small apartment space. Also I may be able to cut down on the total wattage used.
  15. I just read this thread and the totes would work for me too. With inside growing, will need grow lights but wallyworld has some that are not too expensive. ... great ideas~
  16. OK, ok, I am joining the party. I feel steady enough to use the steep stairs outside, and better uncover my total gym again... can also get walking in for sure on Wednesday at lunchtime between classes, and Friday... I know I can walk a mile and a half on gentle slopes and flats right now. I have been very athletic in the past and have stocky muscles that need a workout again but also dealing with fibro and fatigue. so, I take up the challenge!
  17. LOL, I read the duck story. That was classic Darlene!
  18. Another big project for me will be the bed on a raised platform so that I can store food boxes and bins under my bed. One of these days.......
  19. I read this whole thread. I live in a wilderness but exist in my tiny apartment. As I can, I will be building better storage in places I can put to use. The main one I can hide behind closet and a big high cupboard will be for food storage beyond kitchen storage. Also for camp supplies and emergency stuff as well. If I do it very neatly I can store a whole lot. I also like the idea of the wire shelves for the bathroom. I was just looking at mine and thats a great idea and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Would be able to clear my bathroom sink countertop that way and store extra toilet paper up there! Maybe hang a better lamp too. Bathroom lighting sucks in these places!
  20. PS, my sons half brothers who are twins, Michael M. Coast Guard, and Matthew M., USMC. I need to find out where they are stationed now that they are probably done with their A schools.
  21. I just read some of this thread. Wow, so many have gone and are there! My son is a Lt in the USMC, but its his fiance, probably wife soon, that will go. His name is Josh M ( Mac), and hers is Penny. My son suffered a non combat related neck injury and will get a medical discharge in the next few months. Maybe sooner. Not sure. They do keep him busy at Quantico though. Penny is now at Camp Lejeune and will probably be going to Iraq soon. I pray for all of you, military and family and friends. I am a veteran, US Navy, aviation, was a parachute rigger, so safety and survival have always interested me, as well as the explorers and pioneers of yesteryear. Having read actual journals of the Gold Rush wagon train travellers some years back, I think they also were against the odds alot of times, and respect them as much as I respect our troops today. All of them teach me things !
  22. This is a good basic list. Blankets and cots or air mattresses with a manual pump. Sleeping bags, tents that are free standing dome types can be warmer to sleep in. One may also have to customize for individual preference, climates, the types of things they can afford or have available in their region. I have to think up two ways, one for my apartment and the event of getting kicked out of my apartment and having no way to get to where my son may be some states away, unless I walk out, and that may not be very safe. So plan B is to go up in the woods. I want to make a hideaway up past any private land and will be far enough away from the hwys where I live to stay out of trouble except for the wild critters, which may be more civil than my immediate neighbors anyhow. (* lol). arby PS. Making a four season shelter and bringing close enough wood for a fire will be part of Plan B. luckily there is always fresh windfall every year. As for heating my apartment temporarily ( power outtage), propane tanks and indoor outdoor quality heater that runs on propane is the only thing I can maybe store safely enough inside as i have no sheds or backyard area with this old apartment. I have plenty of river water and creek water I can boil and filter if I ran out, and can also flush the toilet with... too. Longer terms would be up in my hideout. I will cache food. Rubbermaid containers will work for that, along with alot of digging. Marked with stones I guess, something that will stick up out of two feet of snow. Making some wool afghans with a loom set up seems a good idea too. For me.
