  1. This has been a day with trying to get on my e-mail.  My account was locked due to what they said was wrong password. Nope it was they couldn't handle that my old computer finally gave up and quit on me. And then I pulled out the apple computer which is a pain to use. They didn't like the fact I am on different computer and changing my internet service. I had to set up a new e mail account. So have now changed it on here. I need to notify people now that I need e-mail for and get them changed as well. This is so disgusting. Just a bunch of work I don't have time for. But google and their stupid over reaction of passwords and other stuff to get back on is stupid. They have gone a bit overboard on the security issues. They locked me out of my back up e-mail that I never use as well. I think I got that one back but not sure yet. Will check that later as my brain is fried from working on this most of the morning.

Otherwise took GS to get a pair of tennis shoes that he badly needed. I had kohl's cash of $50 and if I used it today I got an extra 20% off. So got him a pair of nice tennis shoes for $2.65. The shoes were on sale for $65. So couldn't beat that.

Now I just need to unwind and get my brain to function again if that is a thing. Spent 4 hours trying to get google to unlock that account. No such luck. But we will see in 48 hours. Go figure.

  2. Finished getting all of GS's things packed and into the foyer out of the way. Have one box so far for DD. Everything else in that room will be going to GD on the 5th. I can't wait to get that room painted and my living room back together. It's been a long slow process but I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Went out to garden this morning. Picked Okra, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and green peppers. Will be watering after the sun is off of the garden. It has been a very hot day today. Heat index is 112 for both today and tomorrow. I have 2 watermelon that is not yet ready to pick. But are getting to a good size. eggplant is growing good and okra is still going. Not sure about the broccoli yet. I had to use the seven dust on them. But nothing has developed yet.

Need to go through my paint charts and pick a color for the front bedroom. Going to just paint that closet white as it will reflect light better that way. No light in the closet and it is a good size one. Still thinking about just removing those doors. But then I would have to store them somewhere. So thinking about that one. GS wants pizza tonight when he gets home from work so will make pizza for dinner.

Just got a text that 2 more tropical storms in Atlantic. One near Florida. It has really been busy in the Atlantic this summer. Just hope none of them turn into a bad hurricane.

  3. I agree Jeepers. Bigger is not always better but in this case my DH wanted me to get it for doing other things on it not what I am doing now. But it will have to do for a few months. I am hoping when my SIL comes down that he will be able to get the new internet on it. If not I will just transfer everything to the apple computer. I will need to go through it to see what I want to keep. I have a lot of good info on there as well as my photos. Need to get the printer working on this one also but not going to worry about that till after I move my office back into that bedroom.

Bought some chicken and beef for grandson when he gets his apartment. Used the seal a meal on them for him. I want hm to have a good start on food supplies and such. He will be short on money for a couple of months getting settled into the apartment. I will be busy cleaning bathrooms and mopping floors and things tomorrow and catching up on things in the house. Seems like housework never ends. But that is the way it always is around here. Hoping that will ease up some after the kids move their stuff out of house and everyone is in their own homes. Glad to be able to help them all but now it is time to finish downsizing the house and start doing things again other that being stuck at house doing stuff here. I want to hopefully do a little traveling while I still can.

  4. Midnightmom, it is on a Sat. but granddaughter and her Dh will have just moved into the house on the first of Aug. and then on the 25th of Aug. we are moving GS into his apartment. People coming in from out of town and the party will be at granddaughter's house. Her DH will be going into work at Coast Guard later that evening. So having it at noon works out for everyone as we will still be helping GS with his apartment also after the party is over. I am hoping it won't last more than a couple of hours. But with granddaughter and then her friend and my daughter are giving the party it could last a lot longer. But I think my SIL will curtail it as we all will still be helping GS to move. So it was a decision made on how everything is happening at once. You are right about the A/C it more than likely will be working overtime plus we will be in full swing for hurricane season. Just hope that doesn't happen but the Atlantic Ocean is very active this year.

  5. Read page one before reading page 2. Oh well.

They say that when it hits the fan that people will not know what to do. When the stores dry up and people can't buy food and don't know how to plant a garden that thousands of people will die from starvation, summer heat and cold winters. This is why we need the knowledge of those who have lived that type of life My DH already knew about hard times, gardening, hunting, fishing as such. He knew how much food we needed to put up to get us through the winter. Yes, we have lived on just our canned food but because of his health we did fish but he didn't hunt anymore. So we did rely on the stores for our meat. But that is also why I can so much meat. To reduce that dependency of the stores. Right now I have enough canned meats stored to last me a couple of years and that does not include the freezers. Right now I still go to the store for things and take good advantage of things I cannot grow due to having the space to do it. I don't plant corn because of lack of space. But I also have a huge supply of long term corn and other things as well. I don't know if at my age could live off the grid in any state but at least I will have the knowledge to do so. I can say it will not be easy to live the way we will be having to live one day but we will be doing our best with God by our side every step of the way.

Annarchy, Writing that book about how living on the farm was could help someone else to learn the skills your family knew.

  6. I agree also about writing a book about the ways of life on the farm. Annarchy I think that the way this world is going that people can learn from your experiences.

I never really grew up on my grandparents homestead but went to stay with them during the summer months between school. I learned a lot in those short months each year as I got older.  My grandmother taught me how to can food and my grandfather taught me about gardening. There were other things but some I was to young to remember some of it now. But I do remember I loved it there and enjoyed learning from both my grandparents and my aunts and uncles. Those memories just might come in handy when things go south and I don't think it will be much longer before we see hard times coming around the bend.

  7. Hot day today but do have a bit of a breeze. Picked cherry tomoatos this morning. Will make a salad with dinner tonight. Too hot to do anything outside and is going to get hotter by the weekend.

Becca Anne I hope you have a lot of that squash. Mine is growing all over the ground. More squash is growing. Only the 2 that started early on is huge. We have had off and on rain for the past 3 days now. So hoping for more in this heat. The trellis I am using was temporary and isn't holding the huge plant. It is now over 6 ft. tall and limbs are growing all over the place. Going to work on a different location for next spring with a much better trellis. These plants are something else to watch grown. I need to go out and take pictures of it. Will do that this evening if it's not raining again. To hot right now.

Miki hope all goes well for your DH and he gets better soon.

Had to set up my Apple Mac computer. The old one died when I switched the internet service. It won't take the T Mobile internet for some reason. I don't like the apple for e mail but guess I will get used to it. Need to get pictures and other things off the old computer onto a photo stick and stuff. Then transfer to the mack. This one is a huge screen and I need to figure out how to make the print larger. I need glasses to see this one. The screen on this one is 30 inches. My husband wanted me to get it mainly for my recipes, watching movies and playing music and some other things as well. I just can't get used to it for forums and e mail. Hoping when the kids come in to town they can help me get that done. In the meantime this computer will have to do.

Momo that is great that the hospice lady is helping you out some and giving you fresh produce.  Just wish I was able to get hospice for my DH. 2020 was not a year for anyone to be getting sick like he did.  No doctors to speak of, no home healthcare, not even a follow up appointment because doctors offices had closed down here for the most part. Bad times indeed.

Stay cool everyone it is going to get hotter, And August is just around the corner.  This year has really flown by.

  8. I didn't can the hotdogs. They are still in freezer. Might do the hotdogs and beans.

Midnightmom, that recipe you posted sounds promising. Thinking about trying that after GD gets her stuff out of the house and I can clean up a bit. Might be September before I get to can anything again. August is going to be a month for the kids to be coming in and out every week in all through August. Too bad I don't have a pool for entertaining them. At least for GS. Though I could send him to my neighbor's house next door. He used to get in that one after he finished cutting their grass. August is going to be exhausting. Moving things out of house for one grandchild and then in a couple of weeks the second grandchild moving out. And a baby shower in the mix. Though that will be fun. Working on getting GS to go also since is going to be both men and women at this party. Hoping it won't be an all-day event as the party is starting at 12 pm. Going to be a long day if DD carry's it to 4 pm. I don't want to drive home in the dark as I don't know where her house is yet and not sure of the area I am going to.

  9. My DD took swim lessons when she was in grade school. They offered it though the school and I jumped on it. In her teens she went to classes to be a lifeguard. Only thing she had left to do was swim across an Olympic size swimming pool. It was wintertime and it was an indoor pool with Clorine. Found out she had asthma, and she couldn't make it halfway across the pool for her certificate. They said she could wait till summer but by then she was in Coast Guard. So never did go back. Both my GD's and GS took swim lessons, and one is a lifeguard. Before she was married, she was teaching swim lessons. No where in Washington where she lives has a place where she can do that. So not teaching it anymore.

  10. I saw the pink pearl apples in Harris Teeter a few weeks ago. I bought 3 of them to try and they were really sweet.  As for the other ones I have never heard of them. Very interesting to say the least.  As for Kumquats, my aunts in Florida when we were kids would send us a basket of fruit every year at Christmas. I loved the Kumquats. Now I see them in some of the stores. They are really good. You can eat the skins and all.

  11. Jeepers, those look nice and look sturdy enough as well. I have boxes of books in attic that i need to bring back down. I packed them up and put them up there out of way during construction.  I am trying now to make plans for that front bedroom as it will serve 3 uses. Office, sewing room and craft room. If I can get the closet like I want, I am thinking of moving the closet doors to make it better for easier access. It will be shelving units all the way down but will have enough space at bottom for some 5 gal. buckets. Then I am putting up the shelving unit I have in garage right now. It will serve for my crafts and material and such. Plus, any books that I want to keep in there. The unit is not the wire shelving but wood shelving. I have 2 of those in the pantry and DH when we put up the bigger ones had wire shelving and he bought plywood and cut to fit over the wire shelves. It works great. The plywood is thin about 1/2 inch thick.

  12. It's hot and humid here today. I really need to get out there and weed but can't handle that humidity. Weeds can wait. But getting out of control now.

Miki, you are going to need more than a tomato cage. The plant itself is well over 6 ft tall and now I am going to have to figure out something better for a trellis.  There are 2 squashes on the plant that one is now about 5ft. tall and the other one is about 3 ft. Might be a bit over that by now. I need to take pictures. There are many blooms that I think will become more squash. There is a new small squash I saw on there this morning. My neighbor said the man that gave her the plants said they would be ready in Oct. I think one is ready now. But not sure rather to pick it or not. I am going to send him a text to find out. Being a new item for me, this is a learning experience.

I am on my newer computer, and it is small and fast. I need to slow the keyboard down a bit. It is the one that the internet stopped, and I had to have repairs done. My old one will not take the T-Mobile internet after I cancelled Spectrum. That was a joke. The guy from Spectrum kept trying to get me to do a different price range and offer new stuff. I said no I want to cancel. So, then he decided to try to get me to stay on it and let the government pay for it. Really. Don't think that will happen. He finally got the idea I said to cancel not change my plan. But after it was done my old computer will not pick up the new internet service. GS is going to work on it tonight after he gets home from work. He has it on his computer and we both have it on our cell phones and such. So, it is the computer. So, trying now to learn this little computer I had bought to use in kitchen all over again.

Jeepers you are really getting a lot done at the house and had a fun weekend with family. Glad you were able to see them again so soon.

Mt. Rider, enjoy that air conditioning. It's going to get hotter I'm afraid. Mine is running a bit more than usual these past few days.

  13. Annarchy, glad you made it home safe.

Jeepers, sounds like you really had a great weekend. And loads of fun with your GS.  House is now coming along and you are getting a lot done. Hope they have the house back together within 2 or 3 months.

I will be very busy tomorrow. Need to make a dollar tree trip but that won't take long. Will go there first thing in morning and then back home to finish packing up GS's things to move to the foyer.  Then will mop kitchen floor. I should have done it this evening but was to tired.  Washed clothes this morning and then went out to check garden. We got 3 short rain showers today. The last one just a little bit ago so didn't have to water garden. I will need to pick okra in the morning also.  Picked cherry tomatoes between showers earlier this afternoon. One of the squash is now about 4 feet long and another one is about 3 ft. long. Loaded with blooms also. I will need to come up with something better for them to climb on next year. They are growing all over the yard.

  14. I have the Fanny Farmer but not the others. This is how my grandparents managed. They had four huge gardens each one being over 2 acres of land.  They had a root cellar and a smokehouse. My grandfather and uncles all hunted. the meat was smoked. Grandma canned hundreds of cans of  food from the garden each year. At least 300 to 400 quart jars of green beans alone. Corn she always froze both on the cob or off.  She would have enough food to get them through the winter months and to the next harvest.  I used to love going down to the root cellar when I was little. They raised chickens for both eggs and meat. They had a cow also for milk. But I don't know if they had more than one because I was young and only remember the one. Grandma used to give each of the grandchildren the money to buy the allowed 10 pounds of sugar. So each of us would get into different lines and buy the sugar. We would all together come out with over 60 or more pounds of sugar that Grandma kept in the metal trash cans for making jelly and jams. My grandfather would go down to family members and trade veggies for other things they needed. I remember going with him a lot on those trips.

My grandparents would tell me stories of how they did things when I was in my teens.

The food I remember them planting was corn, green beans, butterbeans, tomatoes, potatoes and sweet potatoes, onions, rootabakers , beets, squash both winter and summer ones, greens of all kinds. Peas and carrots.  I can't remember if they planted things like kidney beans and such that we just buy now in the dried bean form.

I used to sit on back porch in the shade and shucked many an ear of corn, shelled butter beans and peas. Yes I did have some sore fingers. Snapped many a green bean also. Picked many an apple for jelly and picked lots of berries as they had berries growing all the way down the fence line to the road. It was a long way down to that road.

I can't say how much food was canned and in the cellar exactly, but it was at least a few hundred jars of food and jellies down there. They never ran out of food.  Green beans she always had the most of. She had 2 huge freezers full of both meat and veggies as well.

Can't say if that would help anyone on the form here or not but that was for a family of 12.

  15. I think that little boy's dad should have been paying better attention to what he was doing and also he should have had water wings or vest. Every year there are children that have drowned in backyard pools and even in a hotel pool. Not to mention lakes and such because of careless parents.  Glad you, your son and DIL have a good eye for what you are doing for your GS that is what all parents should be doing. But so many don't.  He's going to be a strong swimmer one day.

  16. He's doing great.  Really well on the back stoke. And he should sleep good after all that swimming. Those water wings are great. My nextdoor neighbor used them with all her kids and grandkids and my daughter did the same with the grandkids also. Great invention on those.  Swimming lessons is something I think all kids need to take. They are paying off well. He will be losing the wings and swimming on his own before you know it.

  17. Jeepers, my issue is that my pictures somehow got put into something called one drive through an update. I am trying to get it to let me move my pictures out of there and back to my folder and or desktop folder. I am getting tired of these updates messing things up on my computer. But you can't stop them.  It keeps trying to download windows 11 after it said my computer was not compatible for it. So why won't it stop trying to download is beyond me.
