  1. Gas here has gone up to 2.69 a gal. now. Seems it is going up 10 cent a week.  I heard someone at church say that eggs have gone way up at Walmart. I haven't been to Walmart in over a year, so don't know what the prices were. But there were complaints about how high the prices on eggs are going.

I have noticed a lot of canned goods are going up more now. So now to buy a can of fruit is now 1.99 a can. That is for a 15 oz. can. Used to be able to buy canned fruit 5 for 5.00 or sometimes 4 for 5.00. So 1.99 is crazy.  Will be buying peaches when the market gets the good ones from Carolina again. Other things had gone up as well the last time I was in the store.

  2. Big difference in price for the same thing.  Yes we need to shop around for prices now.  One of the things I also use is honey and capital one one shopping that finds coupons for even more savings.  Seems the places that are selling long term foods are charging much more but on other places they are selling those products much cheaper.  That sounds like they are boosting up the price on their own sites in hopes no one catches on that you can buy it cheaper from other places.  They are selling it to Amazon at a much cheaper price and that savings is pasted on to us. But must remember Amazon is not always cheaper on some things either, but that is a good deal.

  3. Jeepers, I also have a natural gas wall gas heater in garage.  Mine has a fan on it and without the fan to blow that heat out, it doesn't warm up the garage as well, but does take the chill off of the garage. If I decide to stay here I am going to insulate the garage much better than it is now. The large garage door is fully insulated.

Midnightmom, I like that heater. That would be a great backup. Might just check into that when I get things straight around here.

  4. Went to see Lawyer this morning about disbanding Dh's father's trust for the money to be given to the 2 grandchildren. That will end Dh's father's trust. Got the changes made on my trust.  So I now have my daughter as my power of attorney and granddaughter is second if a power of attorney if needed. Made some other changes as well to bring the trust Dh and I had made years ago all bought up to date.  Then came home and called the postmaster general about my taxes being lost in mail and post office refusing to trace certified mail. It is now being traced and sent to the CPA. It has been 10 days. now. So complaint was put in place.

Had a couple of calls to make and then started working on the office again.  Going to get ready to move the 2 bookcases into the living room. Then I am going to get that rug out of there. That is another rug that just stirs up dust no matter how many times you clean it. Then I will get rid of the rug in my bedroom for the same reason.  After I got rid of the one in hall and den the dust in  den is not near as bad. This house is bad for dust. I can dust today and you would never no it tomorrow.

I actually slept last night through the night for the first time in over a year. Hope that continues.

  5. I bought some freeze dried foods from the ready store to see how they were going to come. They were packaged in boxes and good for 30 years if stored properly. Each box has 6 packs of food in them.  I don't like the way it is done as like you say, mice can get into them. I am thinking of keeping them in the packs and putting that food still in the package in one gal. glass jars. Don't know if I open them and put in jars, if they would even last the 30 years. Though I know it will be eaten long before that 30 years.  I have some food I packaged up in Mylar bags a few years ago and now I need to go through that food as I had forgotten about some of it and I pulled it out of closet to check it. I am hoping it is all still good. But will be checking on it. I really feel a need to get all the food in house under control and properly stored. Most all of it is properly stored but I still have foods that need to be stored that I have bought over the past year. Flour is one of them. I am going to buy a smaller freezer after I get the garage cleaned out and son in law takes that monster air compressor out of the garage to take to his house. I want that one just for the flour and a few other things.  I gave that to him as he will have more use for that than I will.  Though I will buy a small one for putting air in tires and such.

  6. Jeepers I agree with you about the fireplace sucking the heat out of house. You have to have a barn fire in it to keep that from happening. We haven't used ours now in a couple of years or more because it is no longer safe to do so.  The fireplace is on an outside wall. Wonder what it would cost to just take it out instead of the big repairs to fix it and then having a free standing wood stove put in. I have seen the stoves at Leman's and they are very expensive. Out of my price range for sure. And since I would have to have one shipped from that store, I don't even want to know the cost of that. Would have to check out local places for one. The fireplace is up in the air till I get a repair price.

  7. Got clothes washed today and cleaned up some more in house.  I am going to go back to church tomorrow. It has been a year since I have been able to go. So will be glad to get back. I have really missed it.  I have talked with several of my Sunday school classmates but just not the same as being able to see them all again.  Just hope I can sleep tonight. That is still a problem for me. I guess after a year of getting up and down to care for Dh when he needed help during the night has messed me up. Thinking about taking melatonin before bed to see if that will help me to get back into a sleeping routine.

I have decided that the tools I can't use, I will give to my granddaughter and her boyfriend. They have both been a huge help to me the past several months. And he doesn't have much in the line of tools.  I have some things for my grandson but with him going in military now, I will pack all that up with his name on it and take to N.C. to store in one of the 3 garages that my daughter has. Then he will have those tools when he is ready for them. My son in law does not need anymore tools as he has what he bought for himself, all the tools from my daughter's grandfather and a relative of his. So he is good on tools.  It will be a while before I can go through all of that though. The house is first.  Granddaughter from Washington state will be coming in on Wed. Can't wait to see her.  I just hope she doesn't run into snow going back home. I heard there are several states that might have anywhere from 20 to 40 feet of snow. I think someone made a mistake on that amount. I am thinking inches but it said feet. They are also saying we might get some snow tomorrow night or early Monday morning but not much.

I am thinking after next week as I have several things to do next week. I am going to start canning from the freezer again. I don't want the meat that is in there to stay in there much longer. So I will be canning meat and making more soups and stews to can. I was looking at my tomato situation, I really need to get the tomatoes planted and have enough to can tomatoes. I have really been through those. Got to go to Lowe's to get the parts to repair the grill before my son in law comes down in a few weeks. He said he was going to fix it rather than me buying a new one.

  8. I have a fireplace and had been thinking after getting the fireplace inspected and repaired, putting a wood burning stove insert. But not sure about it yet. Depends on price.  I have a couple of the scouring sticks and didn't know about using them for fire starters. I will be remembering that one. I do save the dryer lint as we have a firepit on patio and I use the dryer lent for fire starters for that.  I like the way he did the wood but please no sitting down while cutting wood.  Your family would be done for sure.

  9. Kappy and Mary, that was the sweetest thing to give that person his freedom to do things he couldn't do otherwise.  I know he will never forget you guys for helping him like that.  I am sure you will both be in his heart forevermore.

Never would have thought about car parts. That is not good news. Now we may all start having issues when we need a part.  Or is this just a coy to force us to buy electric cars.  Sorry, I just don't trust the government.

Granddaughter and her boyfriend came over for dinner tonight.  The baked ziti with sausage was a big hit. They went back for seconds and also took some home with them.  They put the microwave cart together for me. And it turned out perfect. Now I have my small oven on it instead of the kitchen counter. it took up way to much counter space and I don't have that much counter room. Now I can also put my slow cooker in the bottom of the cabinet when I am not using it and get that off the counter as well.  The top part has glass doors which I like. So that will give me much needed storage space.  Later I will buy a kitchen island. It would be a small one, but would give me much needed prep area.  DH and I had talked about getting the microwave stand and an island,  but he got sick before we could do it. So that all got put on the back burner for a couple of years.  At least for now I have one of them taken care of.  At least doing these things and cleaning house is keeping my mind off of things. That does help. And next Friday I go to granddaughter's Apt. for dinner. I like the taking turns cooking every other Friday as I was afraid I would just not want to cook a meal any longer with it just being me. So it keeps me going and I have Fridays to look forward to.

Got the office half way done. Still a lot to go through, but at least I can see the floor and have the 2 folding tables out of there now.  Going to clean out the bookcases that I want to put in the living room. They match the living room tables, so that would be a better place for them and would give me much needed room in that front bedroom/office.  Going to start taking some of the store bought food to the church food ministry as I am afraid it would go bad before I could eat it all. I will keep some of it, with just me now it is way to much food.

Jeepers, try the patriot supply. The food is not in buckets or cans but in mylar bags in boxes. I have ordered from there and the food is good. They do have corn and other things as well.

Jeepers the Ready Store has #10 cans of corn.  On sale for 18.00 and some cents but can't remember the full prices.

  11. Jeepers, I'm in. I think it would be fun and then you can all come help me pack up when and if my time comes in a year or so. Hope I can still find the vanilla coke. So far it has only been in plastic bottles here. Haven't seen it in cans in a long while.

Went to Kroger today to buy some things I wanted to make for dinner tomorrow. My turn to cook. Granddaughter and her fiance coming here for dinner. Going to make baked ziti with sausage and a salad and garlic bread. I can make that ahead of time. Then just pop in oven when time.

Need to get back into the office and start cleaning again. I am dumping a lot of mess in there. Another big bag of papers about to hit the trash. Then I can work on getting the book cases out of that room and moving the bed from small bedroom into that bedroom. don't need the big office any longer. Going to make a few changes that will work out better for me. I have a huge rap around desk in the front bedroom office that I am debating rather I want to keep that or not. Might get rid of it and buy a small regular desk. Something to think about. I will make decisions as to what I really need to do as I get each room cleaned out. Lots of catching up to do.

My microwave stand comes tomorrow so my future grandson in law will be putting it together for me. I am going to use that for my small oven that Dh got me. I love that oven. I can fry, bake, toast, dehydrate, grill and more in that oven.

  12. Yep. That is true.  Several years ago I tried using a magnifying glass to start a fire. And yes it does work. But I was outside and set some paper on fire with it. Takes a while but it will catch something on fire.

  13. Jeepers, I agree with Mother.  You will get through your decisions about moving.  Keep that faith strong as you make your next move.  Think it through before you make any really tough decisions.

I will be where you are in about a year or so.  Though I do have very good memories in this house with Dh, and we were also married in this house.

The house is what Dh already had before I met him.  He had bought this house with his ex-wife before she started her messing around on him. His daughter and her both many times after Dh and I were married, I was told by them to get the h... out of their house. Well here I am and the ex passed 2 years ago from cancer. The daughter is for now behaving herself.  And moved in with a new boyfriend to another state. So I am not fully committed to this house. Living in VA is expensive and getting worse. So I am thinking about moving, just not sure yet if it will be N. Carolina as of yet though that is where my daughter is now.  Lots to think about over the course of a year or so.

And like you Jeepers, I will not be getting rid of my preps. But there are a lot of nick nacks that need to go. I need to take everything out of the china hutch in order for the floor to be jacked up. So that is where I will start to sell the stuff from the china hutch. I have a lot of time to get that done. My granddaughter is going to help me get that stuff sold.  More money for preps for after I get where ever I decide to move to.

I got out a while this morning and it felt so good.  Went to a new craft store that had opened a year ago.  I best be staying out of that one. It's nice. The name of it is Finley's general store. They have jellies, candies and all sorts of goodies. Lots of neat craft stuff as well.  After a rough day yesterday. I needed to get out of house.  The weather again is beautiful. I feel I should be working on a garden, but this year it is not happening. Though I might go to Lowe's tomorrow to buy grill parts and look at the plants there. And also go to the store where Dh and I always go this time of year to buy our plants and seeds.  They sell canning jars, etc. there and I need to pick up a few things.  I need to get my container garden started.

  14. Wow, jeepers you have a really bad neighbor. How much longer before you can move.  My neighbors seem to be keeping mostly to themselves these days. Two of them are having to school their grandchildren. So they are home at a computer all day for school.  I hope we don't have any neighbors that start that mess.  But then on the other hand you found your Vanilla Coke so all is good.

  15. Why do I get the feeling that whatever they will be using might not be good for us. This puts the question about using store bought foods that have gone out of date but is still good. Would resin leach into the food over time is a big concern.  As it is they have poisoned us with the GMOs and other things they have used over the years in our food source.  One of the reasons we are antibiotic resistant is because of the antibiotics they give to the animals that is used for our meat and eggs. Not to mention milk and milk products. Then there is all that processed food that is loaded with sodium. This is one of the reasons we have all these illnesses like diabetics, heart disease, kidney issues, some cancers and much more. Of course some of the diseases are also based on how well we take care of ourselves as well.  I have also heard that the organic foods in the stores are not all organic. So have to watch that as well.

The market is saving up buckets for me as I am getting ready to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, and such. I am thinking since they are food grade buckets they will be ok for what I want them for.  As for my food, I will do most of my dry canning in glass jars. I am also going to buy up as many quart jars as I can and can my own water. I do have about 4 cases of canned water now. That water will last for ever almost. If like the food is stored in a cool, dark place. Don't like to buy bottled water that comes in plastic for long term, but will buy it for hurricane season as that I will just use up fast.

  16. Jeepers maybe what I was thinking is not so much the loss, as it is how she is having to deal with her injuries and still having children to raise. The grief will still be about the same for everyone. It's what you have to do to deal with all the things you have to do after your loved one is gone.  For me it is getting financial stuff straight and a few other things paperwork wise. For her it is going to be a lot more than just that.  Healing from her injuries, children, and anything else such as a job or anything. Will be a bit harder on her with all the other things she will be dealing with. Though first thing will be to heal from her injuries. That part will be much harder for her.

Hope I explained that a bit better.  Like I said before, I don't always explain things the right way.

I think I also would fail miserably if I had to face what she is facing. Her DH was much younger than mine.  My DH was 83 years old and we both knew before hand that he wasn't going to make it. So that and the fact we were both at peace with it, made it much easier on me than having to loose a loved one the way she did.  That to me makes the grieving process much harder when it is sudden like that.

  17. Went to the other bank Dh and I had opened a few years ago with just a savings account and a CD that now is closed out a couple of months ago.  Opened up a checking account with the life insurance check. Will be paying off the funeral when all that comes in and then I won't be using that account. I am going to make that my emergency account. Will be putting money into it as time goes on and will use that money to work on some projects that need to be done around the house.  So hoping to build that account way up as much as possible.  I really need to get the dinning room floor jacked up and the floor boards that are broken from the weight of the china hutch fixed. Then the fire place will get fixed. I saw early this morning that it had rain water in it again. So trying to dry that out again. Must get that fixed.

Going to get the fridge cleaned out in a bit and then move on to the kitchen cabinets.  At least it is keeping me busy and my mind off of everything. But it also needs to be done as it has been at least 2 years since I cleaned out the kitchen cabinets.

The only automatic banking I do is in Indiana. My S.S. check is deposited there, and my utilities and insurance is deducted. I have a separate mortgage account that gets deducted from too. If I'm going to default on something I don't want it to be the mortgage. I can transfer money from the checking to the mortgage account online. My S.S. covers all of my auto payments except the mortgage. When I get enough extra built up in that account I transfer it to the mortgage account. Sheesh. I sound like some high roller money mogul. :24:   More like robbing Peter to pay Paul.  Point is, if I had to rely on getting a bill from there and sending back a check through the mail, I'm sure it would be late most of the time.

I can't believe I still have a head/neck ache. Enough already. To top it off I think I'm getting an earache. I put some peroxide in it.  I have some sweet oil l will  try tomorrow too. Right now it sounds like a bowl of rice crispies in there. Snap, Crackle, Pop.

Jeepers, what you are describing about you ear is that you have water in the ear.  There is an ear drop you can buy over counter for swimmers ear. And I think you can make your own with alcohol but can't remember off hand if you add anything to the alcohol or not. Might be worth a try.

  18. Got the counters cleaned off and things put away.  Ordered a microwave stand for the small oven. That will get that off the counter and give me more counter space. Dh and I had talked about a small island for the kitchen as it is a small U shaped kitchen. No table as that is on den side of the kitchen. Kitchen is not big enough for a table. But I can get a small island in it. So will be looking into one I like a bit later when things start to calm down.  Can't sleep again tonight. I am tired but can't sleep. I guess I just have to much on my mind these past 2 or 3 days. Still working on paperwork and such as a couple of more things came in for me to fill out and I am just not in the mood to do it. Will get to it maybe in a couple of days. Tomorrow I am going to bank and to Lowe's to get the parts I need for the grill. SIL is going to fix it when they come back down next week. I have gotten the den furniture back in place from where I had to move it around for Dh to be able to get around with walker and rollator.  I had moved some  things in living room around a little to make him a path for walking around the house before he got down to where he couldn't walk any longer, so that is all back in place again as well. Still have to put the bed frame back together, but that will be done at a later time. Not sure I want to use that bed as we had the bed that raises up and down sitting inside that bedframe and the bed with a regular mattress and box springs sits up rather high. So might just leave it like it is without a bedframe. Easier for me to get in and out of.

  19. I don't do online banking either.  I have a set up that the company can get paid directly through the bank. I don't have to do anything  as it is automatic. That is the way we had our health insurance set up. Now I have my charter bill set up that way as the mail kept loosing the bill and we didn't get it half the time. Everything else I send by mail and if a bill is lost in the mail or they say they didn't receive it when I see the check hit the bank. I can call bank and they will give me a hard copy. I would then send a copy of the hard copy to the company that said they didn't get paid and that settles it. I no longer trust the mail either as half the time they are not delivering the mail. We might go 2 to 4 days and get nothing and then we get a box full of mail. We no longer get copies of our checks with our statements but as long as I can get a hard copy if needed I am ok with that.

  20. What she is going through is a very tragic thing.  It happened so fast and very sudden.  Now with her facing trying to get herself healed for her children and the fact that her children are now left without a father, makes it much harder to cope with. My prayers go out to her and her children.  What I am going through doesn't even compare to what this poor lady is going through. Will be much harder on her with her injuries and children to raise without a father. Lord be with each and everyone of them as they go through this. Praying that her struggle to learn to walk again will go easier with each passing day.

  21. I remember way back a few years ago the government was buying up all the foods from all of these places like Augatson Farms, and you couldn't buy anything in a no 10 can for a while. Wondering if this is happening again. I remember several places that said they couldn't sell to the public as the government had made orders that was wiping them out.  Something to check on again. Right now I am trying to get free buckets from the farm market. They are the 5 gal. pickle buckets they get the pickles in. He is going to save me some. I am hoping to get at least 10 of them. I have 5 new buckets I bought a while back that I put in attic out of the way for the ramp to go in. I need to go up there and get those down, as I have a lot of flour to put up and other things as well to get put up. I am thinking of a small freezer to just keep the flour in and that would be about all I would use that for but need to clean out garage first. Can't do that till DD and SIL get all their stuff out of it. I am storing a lot of things for them right now. They just moved into the house this past Friday and trying to get the new appliances in now. They got the oven but the gas line has to be hooked up. the Fridge and dishwasher was coming today. She said now they are going to have to replace the bathtub in one of the bathrooms. It is a huge house as far as the rooms are very large, but the house needs a lot of work. Mostly cosmetic work. So they are going to take a room at a time to remove old wall paper and get each room painted.

  22. I only have certain things I will have direct payments from checking account such as insurances.  That is because I have had to many checks lost in the mail. I have a bill now that has been lost since Jan. 10th.  Can't be traced, so now I send certain things by way of certified mail. That way there is a tracking number. It cost more and you need to make a trip to post office to do it. But well worth it.

I am taking a break right now. working on redoing the kitchen and cleaning it up. I am wanting to buy a microwave stand for my Emeril Lagasse oven. I love that oven and got it free with my cash back from discover. DH wanted me to get it after he watched the info commercials on it. You can almost cook anything in it.  But it is rather big and I need to put it on a stand and get it off the counter. So will be looking into something to set that on instead of the kitchen counter.  My kitchen is rather small and I need that space for when I am canning.

Trying to keep busy to keep my mind off of everything.  But it all hits me late at night.  So not really getting enough sleep.  Though it has only been 3 weeks since Dh's passing, sometimes it seems like yesterday. I think I just need for this corvid mess to end and I need to get out of house for a bit. Am going to try to get out tomorrow for a while. Maybe pickup granddaughter and go to lunch or something also.

Trying to catch up on so much housework that I had not been able to do in over a year. Dust is everywhere I turn. So now I just keep a dust rag and the furniture polish on a table and as I see dust, I get to it right then.  Got to dust under the bed in small bedroom as well.  I feel so unorganized right now that it seems like I am just jumping from one project to another before finishing the first one I started. Just can't keep my mind on one project at a time right now for some reason. But I will get there.  I think part of it is that there are things I had been wanting to do for a long time and now that I can do it, I forgot just how I wanted to do it and feel as though I am starting over on those projects as to how I wanted to go about it.  But it will get done at some point in time. I am thinking when the weather warms up and I can open windows, I will feel more like getting these things done one room at a time.
