  1. This is the most pinholing should ever look: in my non-expert opinion (but I too can quote master canners .) Notice that is is not streaky, built up, traveling down into the food, or on the actual seal part. The pictures above, just the shear amount of build up indicate that the problem is well beyond staining and the medical bill for food poisoning is going to be much higher than the $2-$10 the jar of actual food is worth.
  2. I watched the video. She can call that staining all she likes, but that doesn't make it true. The internet if full of experts and having a youtube doesn't gift anyone with any extra trust on my part. I'm someone that will eat something 5 years out of date if it looks good. You do what makes you comfortable. I would not be and would be mad if someone served it to me. Everyone has their comfort level. That is well beyond mine.
  3. They used to make vinegar from apples. The housekeeper is skipping the fermenting step from a very old recipe. Boil your peels and cores, strain and add 1T sugar per cup liquid. Ferment about 2 weeks. Add as much salt as will dissolve into it and this was a very old Gatorade type recipe used for centuries for dysentery. To serve it you add one large spoon to about 1 cups (2 gills) of water. It was used for both dysentery and cholic.
  4. Staining is one thing, but the pics above are not something I would eat or serve and I'm one of the least 'safe' food people I know.
  5. When it rains, it pours. My mother called me on Sunday with bad news. She lives in western Mississippi and my grandmother (mamaw) lives in central Mississippi. Apparently, Mamaw fell in the shower on Friday, crawled to the kitchen and was trapped on the floor there for almost 2 days before my aunt got someone to check on her because she was not answering her phone. She is currently in the hospital with broken ribs and pneumonia. Mamaw is in her late 80s with several health issues and is an extremely small woman, so it goes downhill fast. She has been very resistant to having someone in to help her. She will be going to rehab after the hospital so we have a few weeks to figure everything out. Everyone just keeps saying....she doesn't want this or that and no one wants to be the bad guy. I may have to go down there to sort things out since I'm fine telling everyone to suck it up and deal with reality. My cousin is supposed to move in with her in July, so hopefully we just need to figure out what to do between rehab and July. Her mother lived to be 99 so we need to factor possible longevity into it if we can get past the current issues. Also my niece totaled her car and went to hospital via ambulance during the weekend. I'm told that she is shaken but fine with a bump on her head. I'm currently waiting for the 3rd thing. Bad things always come in 3s.
  6. I'm going through a bit of a rough patch, but things will turn out just fine. We've been eating out a lot and eating the easier things because I have had zero motivation to cook which is completely unlike me. I have a hematoma from the surgery, but it is a minor complication and mostly involves pain and itching, so I'm still doing well from that. The new legislation states that TSP can only be used to buy into specific 'green companies' so we've already lost a lot out of retirement and all the companies they want are doing very badly. They are killing our retirement. It is depressing watching it disappear and knowing there is nothing we can do. Cross referencing our statements with the current exchange and predicted outcomes.... seriously depressing. I am extremely unhappy with our government. I've been doing some diamond painting because it doesn't hurt my wrist and gives it mobility exercises. I've also been watching a lot of Korean drama on Netflix. Not much prepping going on, but sometimes you just have to get past the funk.
  7. Most of the electric glass top are not induction. Instead they are just flat for easier cleaning and you are advised not to can on them as they heat unevenly (because most pots are not flat) and they have a weight limit. I used to have one and I hated it. You should follow all safety precautions you feel comfortable with, but know that many people cook with gas inside as long as there is good ventilation. This would be me on my gas stove and previously on an Asian style cooktop. It is also exceptionally common to see east Asian cultures using butane and gas indoors in their everyday usage. When I had the glass top stove, I used something like below for flame issues. Amazon.com: Suntouch Portable Gas Stove with Case (ST-7000 Blue): Home & Kitchen
  8. Dont get rid of the jars! Those are expensive and reusable. Just bleach and sterilize them and use them with new lids. The whole point of glass jars is that they are reusable.
  9. Beans are a great source of protein and can be stored dried. They are great at substituting for meat or stretching meat. Chickpeas in particular are easy to make into meat substitutes like sausage patties, chickn' patties, or just beans and rice.
  10. Surgery today went well, no complications and straightforward. I am home and resting with limited lifting and movement for a few weeks. Everyone was nice and I had no bad experiences at the hospital today for which I am grateful. The nurses were very nice, respectful, and helpful.
  11. DH has the week off since my surgery is tomorrow. Today we are taking the little to the aquarium to see 'a whale and a turtle' as those are her new favorite words. I know they won't have actual whales, but I think she will enjoy the bigger fish, sea lions, and otters. She already likes smaller fish, but cannot say fish yet. She loves to scream 'a WAY-l' and throw her [actually mine, but she stole it] stuffed narwhale at me. She can point out all the whales in the picture books. Stuffed Orcas, dolphins, narwhales, blue whales...all of these things are 'a WAY-l' right now. I miss the teens being littles. This is the age that I cherish the most no matter how much they destroy my house.
  12. I may never buy a house vacuum again. The shop vac has more power, is simple to clean, and needs no bags or whatnot. Downside is it is huge and DH looks at me like I'm crazy, but I love his shop vac. It is also easy to open it up and clean out any toys, earrings, or whatnots before I empty the bin. Well, before I make DH empty the bin. It is heavy.
  13. Today I signed up for a free online course from Berkley called The Science of Happiness. It is very interesting, highly recommend. Course | The Science of Happiness | edX
  14. We gave up the no spend challenge and went shopping. A lot of shopping. BJs, Aldis, and The Commissary. After we got home and unloaded everything, the baby woke up (DD14 babysat while we were out) and saw all the stuff sitting around. She said in her baby voice 'WOW!" It was a lot. We did manage to find children's Tylenol at the commissary. I got 2. I would have gotten more, but with the shortage I didn't want to prevent someone who needed it from getting it. I'll stock back up when the shortage is over. DD14 got to use her Christmas knives and help chop up all the meat into desired portions and cuts, bag & tag it, and toss it in the freezer....yes the same freezer I'm trying to empty. ::bangs head on counter:: I am not shopping for at least 2 or 3 months....except for eggs. I did not buy eggs and will get some if the price comes down. Luckily I have most of a bag of powdered eggs in the freezer.
  15. Most insurance policies have a declaration for what they cover and will only cover a set amount of food. They will probably reimburse you for some of it, but I would not expect most of the house contents to be covered. Additionally, large items like fur coats, jewelry, computers, various electronics are not covered unless you had a separate policy for them. There is a huge misconception that home insurance covers your stuff inside your home and that is usually untrue --it mostly covers the structure and only a tiny fraction of what is inside that structure.
  16. I'm not a big fan of microwave cake, but then again I can't eat regular cake either because of the GI surgery. I do remember buying it as a kid and my mom 'letting' me make it in the microwave. I was so excited. I need to try this with my teen.
  17. Upload puts the pics at the bottom of the post. Insert puts them in specific spots in the post. Either way everything you upload is going into that specific post.
  18. The way worker's compensation is set up, it does not matter who or what is at fault. If he hurt it at work, they have to pay for it. 1 hour or 50 years working there does not matter. He did something wrong or equipment fail does not matter. Now they could do other things based on the above information, but NONE of it applies to worker's compensation benefits. Make sure he tells the doctor right away that it is worker's compensation and make sure he goes to a doctor ya'll like. The company will have a 'panel of physicians' that he can choose from. Make sure to get one who you think will be good and fair to you. You cannot change him later--you will be tuck with him and in VA claims, it must be someone from your company's panel. Your usual physician may or may not be on that list. I've adjusted for all 50 states, longshoreman's, and war arena claims (non-military personal, corporate contracted employees, and some private contractors fall under this not military). If there is any reason this would not be a VA claim that can also be taken into consideration and would change they way the claim is handled. Your biggest concerns right now should be timing--go to the doctor yesterday! and documentation. Make sure everyone on board knows he hurt it at work. There should be zero copays or treatment costs. Everything should get billed to his job. Do not wait to go to a doctor.
  19. If he broke it at work, everything should be covered under worker's compensation. He should be getting a doctor's note and they should be paying him a reduced rate. I cannot remember what the current rate is in Virginia, but I can look it up. I used to adjust that for a living back in the day.
  20. only upload the ones you want to use in a particular post. insert and upload mean basically the same thing. I run windows and a desktop. When I make a post with pics, i open windows explorer (the file folder icon) and just drag and drop the pics I want into the post. Do not do any you do not want in that post.
  21. Went to the doctor this morning and was diagnosed with an incisional hernia. He scheduled surgery for it in about 3 weeks. It was mostly what I expected. I'm just sad it could not happen in this Calander year for insurance purposes. It took forever to get the appointment with him. My husband's coworker called and said she tested positive for C19 right after the big office Christmas party. We were both near her. DH took a test and came back negative on Friday. I took one on Sunday that was negative. The dentist called me last week on the day of her appointment and rescheduled my daughter's cleaning appointment to today because the hygienist was sick. They called me this morning to reschedule again because 2 hygienists were sick. Not sure what is taking out our dental office, but there is definately a bug going around. I'm reimplementing the mandatory hand sanitizer for anyone coming into the house. We had slacked off a bit, but I think it is time to take up that slack.
  22. We did Christmas with the family, nice and quiet day. DD2 loved her stuffed dragon more than anything and DD14 got a set of professional chef knives --which she asked for. I got a new Silhouette Cameo 4 (cutting machine) which I had been wanting for years. DH got a fancy watch that answers his phone and does all that health stuff. DD25 called and is well. My dishwasher broke on Christmas Eve so we are behind on dishes and doing a lot of handwash. Joy! It broke badly and is not a simple fix and may have to be replaced. I'll know more in a few days. Today is going to be a cleaning day and I have announced that I am not cooking until the leftovers in the fridge are gone--that should give me a bit of a respite. I will be making things for New Year's Eve and day, but I'm not telling them that. I rearranged my office a bit to get my Cameo on my desk and I'm liking the changes. I need to give it a month to see if this a viable reorganization though. I asked Dh to make me a small wooden shelf to go over the top of my Cameo so I can store more things over it since it is about 2 feet wide and 8 inches deep & high. I'm thinking just a giant U shape to put over the top of it and put baskets of pens, etc on that shelf.
  23. It is a deformer. It isn't used very often anymore because there are a lot of more effective compounds. Flubendazole is more popular these days for treating worms. Some people use Nitazoxanide to treat the flu....which is not a use I would use it for. There have been some indications it is good for Hep B and C, but the size and scope of the study was too small to convince me it was valid.
  24. The price of cards and stamps is prohibitive to many. The stamp itself is .60 and even the cheapest cards are .10 each. Nicer cards usually run .25 to $2 or more for photo cards each. That is a lot of money for people to spend on something that will likely be looked at and then thrown away. D-ex's parents were they type to send out cards and the massive photo letter describing their year in the terms they preferred. I've never been a fan of editing my life for public consumption or wasting money I didn't have so I'm on the grinch side of Christmas cards. That having been said, I do love to papercraft and I make beautiful handmade cards that I will hand to people I know or include with gifts. I just don't want to send photos/letters/ or mail anything.
  25. My older deep freezer has had a few issues and I need to condense everything down and get rid of it. For the next two months, I am going to try and eat out of the freezer as much as possible.
