  1. Beans are a great source of protein and can be stored dried. They are great at substituting for meat or stretching meat. Chickpeas in particular are easy to make into meat substitutes like sausage patties, chickn' patties, or just beans and rice.
  2. Surgery today went well, no complications and straightforward. I am home and resting with limited lifting and movement for a few weeks. Everyone was nice and I had no bad experiences at the hospital today for which I am grateful. The nurses were very nice, respectful, and helpful.
  3. DH has the week off since my surgery is tomorrow. Today we are taking the little to the aquarium to see 'a whale and a turtle' as those are her new favorite words. I know they won't have actual whales, but I think she will enjoy the bigger fish, sea lions, and otters. She already likes smaller fish, but cannot say fish yet. She loves to scream 'a WAY-l' and throw her [actually mine, but she stole it] stuffed narwhale at me. She can point out all the whales in the picture books. Stuffed Orcas, dolphins, narwhales, blue whales...all of these things are 'a WAY-l' right now. I miss the teens being littles. This is the age that I cherish the most no matter how much they destroy my house.
  4. I may never buy a house vacuum again. The shop vac has more power, is simple to clean, and needs no bags or whatnot. Downside is it is huge and DH looks at me like I'm crazy, but I love his shop vac. It is also easy to open it up and clean out any toys, earrings, or whatnots before I empty the bin. Well, before I make DH empty the bin. It is heavy.
  5. Today I signed up for a free online course from Berkley called The Science of Happiness. It is very interesting, highly recommend. Course | The Science of Happiness | edX
  6. We gave up the no spend challenge and went shopping. A lot of shopping. BJs, Aldis, and The Commissary. After we got home and unloaded everything, the baby woke up (DD14 babysat while we were out) and saw all the stuff sitting around. She said in her baby voice 'WOW!" It was a lot. We did manage to find children's Tylenol at the commissary. I got 2. I would have gotten more, but with the shortage I didn't want to prevent someone who needed it from getting it. I'll stock back up when the shortage is over. DD14 got to use her Christmas knives and help chop up all the meat into desired portions and cuts, bag & tag it, and toss it in the freezer....yes the same freezer I'm trying to empty. ::bangs head on counter:: I am not shopping for at least 2 or 3 months....except for eggs. I did not buy eggs and will get some if the price comes down. Luckily I have most of a bag of powdered eggs in the freezer.
  7. Most insurance policies have a declaration for what they cover and will only cover a set amount of food. They will probably reimburse you for some of it, but I would not expect most of the house contents to be covered. Additionally, large items like fur coats, jewelry, computers, various electronics are not covered unless you had a separate policy for them. There is a huge misconception that home insurance covers your stuff inside your home and that is usually untrue --it mostly covers the structure and only a tiny fraction of what is inside that structure.
  8. I'm not a big fan of microwave cake, but then again I can't eat regular cake either because of the GI surgery. I do remember buying it as a kid and my mom 'letting' me make it in the microwave. I was so excited. I need to try this with my teen.
  9. Upload puts the pics at the bottom of the post. Insert puts them in specific spots in the post. Either way everything you upload is going into that specific post.
  10. The way worker's compensation is set up, it does not matter who or what is at fault. If he hurt it at work, they have to pay for it. 1 hour or 50 years working there does not matter. He did something wrong or equipment fail does not matter. Now they could do other things based on the above information, but NONE of it applies to worker's compensation benefits. Make sure he tells the doctor right away that it is worker's compensation and make sure he goes to a doctor ya'll like. The company will have a 'panel of physicians' that he can choose from. Make sure to get one who you think will be good and fair to you. You cannot change him later--you will be tuck with him and in VA claims, it must be someone from your company's panel. Your usual physician may or may not be on that list. I've adjusted for all 50 states, longshoreman's, and war arena claims (non-military personal, corporate contracted employees, and some private contractors fall under this not military). If there is any reason this would not be a VA claim that can also be taken into consideration and would change they way the claim is handled. Your biggest concerns right now should be timing--go to the doctor yesterday! and documentation. Make sure everyone on board knows he hurt it at work. There should be zero copays or treatment costs. Everything should get billed to his job. Do not wait to go to a doctor.
  11. If he broke it at work, everything should be covered under worker's compensation. He should be getting a doctor's note and they should be paying him a reduced rate. I cannot remember what the current rate is in Virginia, but I can look it up. I used to adjust that for a living back in the day.
  12. only upload the ones you want to use in a particular post. insert and upload mean basically the same thing. I run windows and a desktop. When I make a post with pics, i open windows explorer (the file folder icon) and just drag and drop the pics I want into the post. Do not do any you do not want in that post.
  13. Went to the doctor this morning and was diagnosed with an incisional hernia. He scheduled surgery for it in about 3 weeks. It was mostly what I expected. I'm just sad it could not happen in this Calander year for insurance purposes. It took forever to get the appointment with him. My husband's coworker called and said she tested positive for C19 right after the big office Christmas party. We were both near her. DH took a test and came back negative on Friday. I took one on Sunday that was negative. The dentist called me last week on the day of her appointment and rescheduled my daughter's cleaning appointment to today because the hygienist was sick. They called me this morning to reschedule again because 2 hygienists were sick. Not sure what is taking out our dental office, but there is definately a bug going around. I'm reimplementing the mandatory hand sanitizer for anyone coming into the house. We had slacked off a bit, but I think it is time to take up that slack.
  14. We did Christmas with the family, nice and quiet day. DD2 loved her stuffed dragon more than anything and DD14 got a set of professional chef knives --which she asked for. I got a new Silhouette Cameo 4 (cutting machine) which I had been wanting for years. DH got a fancy watch that answers his phone and does all that health stuff. DD25 called and is well. My dishwasher broke on Christmas Eve so we are behind on dishes and doing a lot of handwash. Joy! It broke badly and is not a simple fix and may have to be replaced. I'll know more in a few days. Today is going to be a cleaning day and I have announced that I am not cooking until the leftovers in the fridge are gone--that should give me a bit of a respite. I will be making things for New Year's Eve and day, but I'm not telling them that. I rearranged my office a bit to get my Cameo on my desk and I'm liking the changes. I need to give it a month to see if this a viable reorganization though. I asked Dh to make me a small wooden shelf to go over the top of my Cameo so I can store more things over it since it is about 2 feet wide and 8 inches deep & high. I'm thinking just a giant U shape to put over the top of it and put baskets of pens, etc on that shelf.
  15. It is a deformer. It isn't used very often anymore because there are a lot of more effective compounds. Flubendazole is more popular these days for treating worms. Some people use Nitazoxanide to treat the flu....which is not a use I would use it for. There have been some indications it is good for Hep B and C, but the size and scope of the study was too small to convince me it was valid.
  16. The price of cards and stamps is prohibitive to many. The stamp itself is .60 and even the cheapest cards are .10 each. Nicer cards usually run .25 to $2 or more for photo cards each. That is a lot of money for people to spend on something that will likely be looked at and then thrown away. D-ex's parents were they type to send out cards and the massive photo letter describing their year in the terms they preferred. I've never been a fan of editing my life for public consumption or wasting money I didn't have so I'm on the grinch side of Christmas cards. That having been said, I do love to papercraft and I make beautiful handmade cards that I will hand to people I know or include with gifts. I just don't want to send photos/letters/ or mail anything.
  17. My older deep freezer has had a few issues and I need to condense everything down and get rid of it. For the next two months, I am going to try and eat out of the freezer as much as possible.
  18. Time brings more and different perspectives. Kid19 did go to live with her dad after the summer was over. He decided that kid could stay after all and there was some packing drama, but otherwise kid has been there and happy for a year and a half. Kid graduated and is working in childcare. We are having some issues and notice that I am no longer using pronouns. Adjustments all around. My birth experience was not great. My BP spiked to 213/99 at the OB appointment so we ended up having a C section that night because they could not get my BP down. It was unpleasant and the Anestheologist told me to hold on to a pole or he would tie me down (i am not paraphrasing.) I had a major panic attack. I had to wear cloth mask while they did a C section. My BP didn't come down for 4 days and they could not get it down. I found out later it was because they were giving me coated pills for it. GI surgery means coated pills go in the mouth and out the bum undigested and whole. Well duh. No wonder it didn't go down. I wasn't given anything for it that my body could process. I did not have a positive birth experience, but baby River was healthy and amazing. I tried to nurse, but my milk never truly came in and I ended up having to go to formula after two months since she was not gaining weight. I even tried that small pipe tube with formula nipple trick, but my milk just didn't come in. Since I gave birth, my blood sugar is great and stays around 80, A1C about 5.1. My BP is a tad high but not so much they want me on meds right now. If I eat certain foods like ice cream, pancakes, or orange juice I vomit and feel like I'm going to die, but that has been the same since my GI surgery back in 2016. River is 2 now and doing very well. She is on target for everything DD14 is in gifted classes and is happy. DD26 is in a stable relationship and looking for work. MIL is not currently in the picture except for the occasional phone call to my DH. My estranged father died right before Halloween. My brother finally reached a divorce agreement with his ex (he kept the kids, both daughter and step daughter which says a lot about his ex), and has met a new wonderful woman. Things are quiet right now and that scares me because I'm waiting on the next shoe to drop. I'm thinking that the economy is about to go splat. I think this next decade is going to be more about mental prepping than physical prepping. I think Ambergris had a good idea when she left it all to start over. I don't want to leave, I just want to rethink the way we do things and the processes we use.
  19. My uncle by marriage died of brain cancer at 36. My aunt, his wife, died of gallbladder cancer at 49. She was a year and 10 days younger than my mother. Every year for those 10 days, she used to call my mother and say 'you are 2 years older than me.' It is funny what we remember about people. It was really hard for my grandmother most of all.
  20. The only bean flour I've used is besan (chickpea flour.) And it does super great as a tempura type batter, hummus, or as part of various fritters and meat replacements. I have used whole pureed beans as part of the liquid/fat in things like cakes and brownies and it does well that way. I'm betting black bean flour would do well as a deep fried or breaded coating on things and would work well for southwestern flair. Perhaps as part of a black bean/flour tortilla? Then fried and cut into strips or triangles for dips. Red beans, I'm thinking Asian sweets or bread. You could soak them again and pressure cook them like last time then process them with sugar and water to get a red bean paste to use in mochi, dumplings, and other sweet steamed buns. The grainy would break down a bit after processing and the sugar would counter the bitterness so read bean paste might be a good use if they are red beans. What type of beans are you working with? I'll try to link some more specific recipes.
  21. I use a lot of almond extract. If you add it to chocolate things, it makes it next level and people can never figure out what is in it to make it so good. Cheater Chocolate Mousse 1 box chocolate pudding 1c milk 1.5 c heavy cream Splash almond extract. Whip in stand mixer till desired firmness. Serve as pudding or in a pie shell. Everyone always thinks I do something fancy to this but it usually goes over better than the custard type I have to cook from scratch and it takes less than 5 minutes to make. Sometimes I make fancy chocolate boxes (empty chocolate shells) with old cream containers or silicone molds and fill them with this mixture. It doesn't do as well with the off non-dairy or powdered, but it is better than nothing with powdered or coconut milk and whip topping mix from rainy day foods (walton feed).
  22. Today I got up early, went to Lidl and discovered spiral sliced bone in ham for .95lb. Max 2 it was advertised as 1.49lb but was on even better sale. Got a few other odds and ends and am now reconciling my preps list with the fridge list. Later we will clean and wrap Christmas presents while DH rests. They also had corn and green beans on sale 6/$2, stuffing .59 box, butter 2/$4, and sugar 1.69 per 4lb bag. Hit them up if you have one near. Those are really good prices right now.
  23. I've always split my beans down the middle when soaking in vodka and I use very different amounts, but I'm usually making cordial. The condensation is normal when the temperature changes. I use a mason jar and shake them once every 2-3 days by just turning over twice for about 6 months to 2 years depending on what all is in the cordial. Blueberry everclear cordial takes 2 years, but is as smooth grape juice once it is done. I have used vanilla cordial in place of vanilla extract with fine results.
  24. I counted my chickens and jinxed myself. Don't do that. Right after I posted my goofing off, DH fell in the laundry room and dislocated his shoulder. The ER trip wasn't that bad, but he is in a lot of pain. Picked up McDonalds for a late lunch and got baby down to nap. DH decided to have a beer and play a video game...so of course he spilt it all over his keyboard. Today is not a good day.
  25. Husband has been at his job for 30 years next year, so he had enough leave to take off from today through the first week of January. So I have planned to get more/less done since he is home and able to help and watch the baby. It is amazing how much more housework needs to be done when people are home instead of elsewhere. I love him dearly but he is spoiled by me being a housewife and doesn't really know how to do basic things. I am also spoiled by all the things he does. I have currently slept in and goofed off 3 hours past when I should have been up with the baby. BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER!
