prepping canning lids

I was wondering if anyone has a contingency plan should canning lids become scarce in the future. Jars are reusable from year to year but the lids are not. Have you prepped canning supplies? How much? Would we have to go more toward dehydration?

I have some lids, but not nearly enough for a year of canning.

 

 

I am not at a place where I can store those ahead... *yet*.

I have 120 dozen lids and 20 dozen rings, that should hold me a year. I go to 4 Wal-Marts at the end of the canning season and buy all they have.

I currently have 240 packs of lids put up, that's a year and 1/3 of my current needs for canning. I intend to get 2 more cases of lids to up my storage to 2 years of lids. I have more rings than I will ever need.

It would be wise if we stored them ahead. They say only get enough for one year, but they have a shelf life of approx. 5 years.

I didn't know they had a shelf life. Thanks for the info! I guess the rubber on the lid gets brittle, huh? I never even thought about that.

They can get brittle or sometimes they get "gummy".
