Yart
Hello all, I have a question. I just today got some jars that still had food in them. The oldest date was from 1979. Pretty kewl. I dumped the contents and tossed the lids. But some of the jars have what looks like fossilized black yuck in them. Now my question is what do I do with the black goo? Will it be safe to open the jars? Or should I just toss them? I hate to because there are 18 but if its not safe to keep I will understand. Link to comment
Canned Nerd
If the lids are still sealed, I would assume your 'food' decomposed to something from the Labrea Tar Pits but nothing dangerous. You should be able open, dispose of and clean with no problems. Maybe a clothes pin on the nose might be in order. Link to comment
Cat
Scrape, soak, bleach, boil... glass can be sterilized. LUCKY YOU!!! Jars you don't have to buy new! Some of those older ones are stronger! Link to comment
Yart
Thanks for all the input. I am going to wait till it stops raining and clean them outside. I am just happy to know that I don't have to toss them out. Woo Hoo! Link to comment
Ambergris
I'd warm them in the sun, then pour boiling water over them and let it sit until cool, then flush them with the hose. Then scrub and bleach. Link to comment
