  1. I have had baking powder die over too many months of cupboard storage. Thanks for the tip on how to test both . I have never had baking soda go bad. Is baking soda used in baking powder and is there a recipe to make baking powder ? They do different things when you bake with it but I am not going to look it up , I just understand that basically...... some of you will know the absolute details but I just wanted to know a recipe to make my own baking powder since I dont use it fast enough most of the time only cooking for one and needing to keep my diet low carb. But if I had to do a lot more physical labor I can eat more carbs and quick breads are easy to do in an emergency rough out camp , so would love a basic recipe of how to make baking powder as I have wondered lately about that.
  2. ok.... it happens. Too bad they did not use google translate to get it in English as the majority of us read and write in English and it is simply a second language for some. Makes me curious about the content.... I was so busy, but I did take French in college and with google translate I could have screened the subject matter but I was so busy the past two days with my writing I don't think I noticed even if I 'checked in.' Cat, you can always holler to me on the phone . If it was innocent posts and not rabble rousing where it should be, I can see absolutely deleting, some of us are "rebel children", me included, so I know how that goes but if it was meant well, it makes me feel bad we may have restricted someone who was undeserving of censorship. I can understand the sensitivity levels going on, we see so much garbage going on , and want to protect folks from what might have been something way off base for this site and thats ok, but it's possible it was just confusing as heck, so better safe than sorry. Obviously if it was nasty stuff, eliminate it if you figure that out at a glance. I have a familiarity with French and Spanish and a tiny bit of Gaelic and have dictionaries and stuff to refer to ...... so I could copy and paste passages if they are not super long and re post if it was decent material on the thread subjects.... you do get the gist of things although google translate may not be perfect, dialects can vary. I am no expert but google translate can be a very helpful tool in such a case. I could do a percentage anyway. PM me for phone number, Cat, Annarchy, Mt Rider, if you like.
  3. UP to 58 and climbing to mid 60s finally..... really doesn't normally stay this range for very long. This is just a weird winter and spring I am thinking for the north. It IS nice and sunny today, or sort of, at least the sky is blue ? That always makes me feel better in general.
  4. Sorry no pic,but I ate it from my camping plate, enamel blue in color, lol. Roasted chicken thighs dusted with herbs, garlic powder, poultry seasoning, a little salt, I like to add tarragon, but don't have any at the moment. A handful of fresh green grapes, green beans and a small quesadilla with it. I'm stuffed.....It was gooood.
  5. Annarchy, size of a large shepherd, that was a cougar, bobcats are not that big. About 30 lbs or so , not more than 40. Other larger predator feline would be a lynx, and we have Canadian Lynx's showing in the region, they are a bit bigger than bobcats and coloring is different . As a cougar, thats a teenager size for a cougar too. But still enough to have quite a fight on your hands if they are aggressive. Better to holler and scare them off any how.
  6. Annarchy just put a cast iron pan on the concrete and fry your eggs. It will work I bet! And I have absolutely no interest in ever living in a desert again!
  7. Happy Birthday, shannsmom! Hope it was a good day for you!
  8. Yup, it is snowing, wet clumpy icky spring snow. It should start warming up in a couple hours though, so of course while it has draped every twig and branch and tree trunk and the soil, it will MELT. About another week before it is 60F during the day and 40's in the night time. I was wondering if we got more snow storms in the springtime if it meant we were actually heading int o a mini ice age. * shrugs.
  9. It may get a bit active as it moves more in the ways it will go, over your head. ( Mt. Rider.)
  10. WE, evidently are expecting colder temps and snow, for hours tomorrow... really???? It's a little colder today too , as the front moves in? It was only in the fifties, mid to low the past several days. Lumabean's wee son and I are dealing with hay fever allergies. I hear its the birch pollen, but I don't know. I don't think it is merely grass because I have only had it this bad in the northeast US. Lumabean is doing ok these days. I chat with her on FB once in a while. Hoping MT. Rider does not get any more snow though! Mine will melt fast as it will warm up and we do need any moisture we can get. NE US and Atlantic states are very dry compared to normal. NO burn orders are already in affect as a result.

  12. Windows open! Beautiful morning and afternoon, nice and clear but it look like cloud cover will be incoming now. It is very slight and still sunny enough though. About 70F?
  13. I had no idea they were considering famous women. I'm used to presidents but I don't know if we should change anything. Guess I will just have to think about this for a while.
  14. I think I am going to leave my windows open some tonight. It will be in the forties outside so should be fine. Full moon tonight? I saw it as I was walking home from my friend's place, as I spent couple hours over some decaf, catching up on things with her.
  15. I hope your special doc can help you feel a lot better Kappydell. Those cat fish sound great! We can catch large ones in Lake Champlain from the docks. Can I ask what kind of bait you use for them? I am trying to get ideas.
  16. That wee fellow has such a great spirit. I am glad he has his great service dog. They both sound like excellent matches.
  17. Ended up trying to go up a very steep 'hill', a mountain ridge really, on Sunday, pushing my electric scooter up the side of the road. I must have gone over 45 minutes doing that so I will say 2 miles worth. Today walked , mostly flat , just a mile. I am a bit stiff from Sunday's 'work out'. Sat outside for lunch and chatted with folks who sat down at the picnic table, got about an hour of Vitamin D , the natural way as it was sunny and I was warm enough.
  18. It has cooled off here a bit to the mid fifties compared to the weekend, but its sunny and supposed to have some wind but not much. I am going out to get some lunch and do a little shopping and stretch my legs soon.
  19. Last night Houston To San Antonio, up to 16 to 20 inches rain. My son's inlaws live and work down there so I hope they didnt even try to get to work this morning. It's bad flooding and flash flooding going on and too many water rescues of drivers. Huge mess and homes are being inundated now NW of Houston and the storm is still going on, badly. Hope anyone with friends or relatives or are residents in the area are already on high ground!
  20. oops, looked at topo map of that trail I am interested in, creek is straight, but trail curves back and forth , small circs, though, mmmkkk....... but pond is closer to trail head, hurrah!
  21. ok, the route road I am familiar with that is flatter, south ward of my town does still lead to the trail I am most interested in exploring. It's supposed to rain sometimes the next two days so probably Tuesday or Wed I can cruise down there. My gosh the road is torn up too, you really have to take your time if you are bicycling. It felt great getting outside, today. The trail I am thinking of is an easy smooth path all the way up into a canyon area and then it branches off about five-six miles in. At about the three mile mark or less there is a small pond to the north of the trail that is nice to primitive camp at. Its a nice day hike to go there and walk in to the pond and back or walk in to camp overnight and come back the next day. Free. That would be easier than the steep mountain road you have to go over to get to Lincoln Pond. There is a long creek that goes all the way up to the canyon like area where the trails branch again too. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Both the trail and creek are straight , parallel each other so you can follow either back to to the route road. It's hard to get lost there. So it's a good beginner area to get started again in the out doors. Two higher ridges that keep you in the trail , creek area all along .
  22. Jeepers have you experienced cicadas when they do their thing? I have. First summer I was in the navy, was in NATTC Memphis, TN, the cicadas came on with an incredible never ending raucous noise all day long. I could not handle the noise factor if it was every summer! It is a good 70 degrees and sunny, bright outside. I decided to ride my wee electric scooter down a road that leads to a road that technically leads to the big pond I wanted to go to. Uh huh. Well..... that road that goes east to the pond...... its way steeper a route than I thought. I was walking up most of it with the scooter lightly throttled to help pull me up the road, lol. Bit of a stiff work out for first thing. Almost to the top and I assumed it was going to lead me to the campground area and fishing areas I was familiar with . Well, evidently it is more complicated , and that 'pond' is way huge!!!!!!!! Way larger than I thought. A nice young couple actually gave me a lift., but they were not from this area, just camped with some friends in more primitive sites , along the western part of this huge pond ( its really a lake, even a good sized lake.) They ended up, in a very round about way getting back on the route road I had thought I would be returning to town on, assumed it was not quite as steep as this first route...... um, nope! In fact its got this great long roller coaster style descent ( in one spot) , coming from the pond, which I did not remember from long ago van rides. It's fine in a car or a motorcycle with brakes, lol, its not ok for that wee scooter. ( electric and lousy brakes) ..... I definitely need to upgrade to something far more road worthy. The young couple would not take gas money, and kindly dropped me off in my town. They were very nice and it was fun chatting with them. Ok scratch off more than 23 lb pack and on foot , to go up there. ( Note to self.) I saw bobcat tracks, yup, verified in my Tom Brown tracking book, near the top of that original part of the road leading to the western part of Lincoln Pond. It would have been easier to just descend that original road way back to my route road if I had not gotten that nice ride, had I Known it was really some serious miles of back roads the rest of the way. Maps can be deceiving. Ended up much closer to Lake Champlain at one point as we were searching for the state campground I did know.
  23. I am sorry you fell, Mt. Rider. I have done somewhat better lately, myself, getting a little strength back and flexibility, but it is a long road back for me. I am trying not to push my luck and it really takes presence of mind. It doesn't matter where we walk either, it all takes a lot more thought and focus when we do it if we have problems that affect our stability, coordination and balance... and it is so easy to momentarily get distracted.
  24. Hurrah! I worked on knitting the heel flap, heel turn, and gusset is mostly done , today of a sock I need to complete so I can move on to other knitting projects.
  25. Yes, it is accounted for next week in my ten day forecast, windy a bit, rain and snowy junk possible but who knows by the time it gets here, it will just evaporate fast now. Probably enough to wet things down good for a few hours or so but thats about it here, but closer to you it will be more intense weather. Nebraska had warnings up about it , mostly rain concerns. Some flooding ?
