  2. "Teas From Plants Around You And Their Benefits" This is an excellent resource in preparedness. I have harvested herbs for teas but not nearly as much wild items found in this article. -------------------------------- Teas From Plants Around You And Their Benefits All teas unless specified are brewed with 1 teaspoon dry material or 2 teaspoons fresh material to 1 cup of water. Always steep. This means pouring hot water over material and letting set for 5 - 15 minutes. Always dry leaves and roots out of the sun, in dark airy places. Then store in airtight containers. Persimmon Tea: The leaves when dried and crushed make a fine strong tea. Can be used all year round. Rich in vitamin C. Used as a healthful tonic. Sassafras Tea: Boil fresh roots after washing, until water turns reddish brown. Can be sliced and dried for later use. Claimed by some to be a blood thinner, a blood purifier, to help bronchitis, a stimulating spring tonic. Mostly it is used for pure enjoyment. Birch Tea (Wintergreen): Black, yellow and white birch. Dried leaves can be used year round. A large handful of fresh leaves steeped in hot water was drunk 1 to 2 cups a day for rheumatism and headaches. Said to reduce pain of passing kidney stones, and a fever reducer. Cold it was used as a mouthwash. Blackberry/Raspberry Tea: The dried mature leaves of these brambles make a good tea. Used to help control diarrhea, as a blood purifier and tonic. Use all year round. Blueberry Tea: The dried mature leaves are steeped until cool and drunk 1 to 2 cups per day as a blood purifier and tonic. Also used to help inflamed kidneys and increase the flow of urine. Somewhat bitter. Use all year round. Alfalfa Tea: The dried and powdered leaves and flower heads make a very nutritious tea, but it is somewhat bland. We suggest mixing them with normal teas to stretch them and add nutrition. Its vitamin content was the reason it was used. Used all year round. Wild Strawberry Tea: Use dried leaves normally. Pour several cups boiling water over a handful of fresh leaves in the evening. Cover and let steep overnight. Strain water and reheat in the morning. Believed to help with a multitude of things, from stomach troubles, eczema, diarrhea, etc. According to experts, it is much more healthful than purchased coffee or teas. Use all year round. Wild Rose-Hip Tea: A handful of these steeped for 10 minutes, then strained, make a healthful tea. Can be used dried or fresh in season. Instead of boiling, place a handful in cool water overnight, then stain and reheat in the morning. Use all year round. Strong Vitamin C content. Helps with Colds and the flu. Also for sore throat. Sweet Goldenrod Tea (Anise): Can use dried or fresh leaves or flowers. Makes a very flavorful tea. Pure enjoyment only!! Used all year round. The original page can be found on-line at http://www.pioneerthinking.com/teas.html Page is missing but the site is still active ------------------

    Hello!

Great to have you join us, HappyGirl!! At Mrs. Survival, our members are at many varied stages of living a preparedness lifestyle but I truly believe we all have the same heart towards the subject of surviving off the land. Some of us are able to live simply and wholesome now and some of us like yourself yearn to be able to someday and are putting up information for tomorrow. I belong to the latter group. Most all of what my family of 4 consumes, does presently come from the store...But over the 4 years I have belonged to this website, I have gleaned and tucked away so much information and wisdom from these pioneer women here...that I just know I can do it all when the time is right. Main thing is that we share what we know, encourage where we can, and always strive to learn more. Glad you are here Blessings!
  5. I love vegging out on Fernando Ortega ....this man can sing about the essense of life like no one can. Of course, John Denver does come close ------------------
  6. ((((((Snow)))))) Your family and your son are in my prayers. Depression is an awful enemy!! Your son is blessed to have you as his mama....fighting in places where he is unable to for the time being. He will gain strength as long as there are those in his life that have hope in him! Bless you for standing in the gap, and keep on talking...we are here for you!! ------------------ [This message has been edited by Ginger (edited September 30, 2002).]

  15. Bumping up for Deblyn... you're going to love this thread! Way more info than composting... that's what makes this site and its ladies so grand!! Ginger
  16. Hi Deblyn! There is a post further down... "She couldn't do it without the worms" I think it may help you know what you want to know about the many benefits of composting. I'll revive it so you can find it...this lady has pure garden gold on her website. ------------------
  17. ((((((Hillbilly))))))) The ladies here have more than adaquately expressed what I would have said. If I could add anything, it would be to evaluate and weigh every action and line it up to what it will really matter in 5 years. You must pick your battles to have a ongoing relationship with your teen. I had and still have to do this with my 18 year old son who still lives at home. Examples: Not keeping his room clean...really does not matter in 5 years. Mind you, this MOM will not be cleaning up one stitch of garbage from this room as long as he resides there. Hopefully in 5 years, he will be out on his own and can choose to live in this way or clean up his act by then. His choice. Not having the desire to get out of bed till 3-5pm; does have significant value and does matter in 5 years in order to hold down a job. This is a daily ongoing battle in our household and the consequences of this matter, greatly outweigh the 5 year rule in my opinion. The same with your step daughter...not taking care of animals/pets properly does matter in 5 years as it may lead to child abuse... pray not but you get the jest of this. You are in my thoughts and prayers. You are a wonderful *mother* to stand in the gap for this confused and misguided teen...she will come around in time. She will come out of the teen years and blossom into the woman you dreamed her to be. Its only a stormy season...bright sunny days are ahead. ------------------
  18. MidnightMom...good for you to lay 9-11 out in that perspective...sounds like it was a healing day! I admire your enthusiasm and will encourage you keep on keepin' on! I only *worked out* at my 2 jobs (8am-4pm & 5pm-9:30pm) so yesterday was a full day for me...but my desire is to touch every one that I meet with hope, grace and love of what has been so graciously given to me. ------------------
  19. Whoa Nellie!! I mean Ed Wow, thats a whole lotta fruit!! I'm not the canning expert but one idea I could pass on is... it as of you have a ton of grapes and could make a whole lotta WINE!! Well?? Gal's what can Ed do with all that fruit?? ------------------
  20. (((((((LogcabinMama))))))))) Praying for Nathaniel and your mother's heart! I know you will indeed hold it together. We are here for you, every step of the way! Please come here and talk whenever you need to...we'll be here with lights and coffee on and sometimes scrumptious pastries when the occasion calls for them. Love ya! ------------------
