CrabGrassAcres
I grew up with standard "long grain" then I discovered there are lots of different kinds of rice! Basmati, a lot of people like this, I think it tastes like burlap bags. Brown, usually you get the long grain or short grain. Both are ok, but take longer to cook and I don't really seem to digest it well. Jasmine, smells nice and tastes ok. I think it is a bit stickier than I really like except for desserts or the "sticky rice" recipes. Parboiled, my favorite. It retains the natural vitamins yet stores longer than brown. It cooks fluffy and the grains stay whole instead of breaking up so much. I like the flavor too. Costs more than "long grain". Link to comment
CrabGrassAcres
Sweet rice. Short grained white rice that is used in stick rice desserts. We love this for rice pudding, but I'm going to try some of the sticky rice recipes too. This is good to make rice crackers. Then there are the specialty rices like Purple and Sweet black and Forbidden. I ordered a couple of these to try out when I ordered the rice steamer this morning. What are your favorites? Momo
I use brown for health reasons. I also like the basmati but since it's white I don't make it too often. My pets all love the cheapest white rice I can buy! Link to comment
Aint2nuts
I used long grain white, because that is what I get from the food bank. *grin* Link to comment
furbabymom
I get the brown basmati rice from Trader Joe's. I have red rice and black rice in my freezer that I bought a while ago, but I haven't tried them yet. I should do that! Link to comment
DenimDaze
I love brown rice, but it just takes too long! Wild rice is yummy but expensive! My staple is long grained, now bought in 25 piund bags. I used to buy it in 10 pound bags Link to comment
furbabymom
Brown rice does take a long time! When I make it, I make a triple batch and then freeze whatever we're not eating that day in serving-size portions, so we can have it again without having to wait for it to cook. That works well for us. Link to comment
BiscuitMaker
I have an electric steamer, I cook vegetables in and it makes great rice. I prefer this steamer so I can use it for multi. uses. Link to comment
