Cruising! (Showing my Age)

Dee brought this up in another forum-

Being able to fill up the tank on a car (cheap!)and go cruising for boy all evening long.

So? Did you have THE cruise mobile?

I borrowed my Mom's 77 Magnum XE with the silver metallic paint and the T-top (does anybody even remember those kind of windows? LOL) windows. I was *styling* and cool. We cruised Fry Blvd. and parked at the K-Mart parking lot. (My Mom decided that after all us ratty kids she deserved this car! laugh )

My town even had a *gasp* drive-in theater!

I didn't have a car till I was nearly out of nursing school. Mom needed hers for work and I didn't have time for cruising anyway. I had to work to help support the family from the time I was 16. My first new vehicle was a brand new 1978 Ford Ranchero, and boy was it pretty! Before that I had a junker Taurus.

My girlfriend had the car a 1962 Corvair....remember those? My but we put alot of miles on that thing. In this car she had a 45 record player. I haven't found anyone whos ever heard of such a thing. It was chrome and attached under your glove compartment. The records went on by pushing them up on the spindle from the bottom of the machine. It seldom skipped unless you really hit a bump.

We cruised Valley Blvd...I was a Valley Girl (San Gabriel Valley) before we ever heard of valley girls! smile

Snip****How about the first "in car" record players.. they were mounted under the dashboard and were "up-side-down".. and they played a 45 record..unfortunately, if you hit a bump..the needle would jump from one place to another..and so it wasn't a good idea to sing out too loudly, or you'd be singing by yourself. I especially remember "Mr. Peppermint Man"..and Hey Paul, Hey Paula" being popular at that time***snip

Sound about right? smile

and if your real nostalgic:

Oh my gosh, someone else, somewhere in this world remembers the car record player too. My girlfriends held 6-8 records at a time.

Yep, that's the Corvair but of course she didn't have a station wagon.

Our theme song was, "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys. This friend and I still email and we cracked up when we saw the commercial on TV for the old people in those new motorized wheel chairs and "I Get Around" was the song playing. We couldn't believe our song, nor us, had come to this!!! rofl

Well, I drove a "low rider". lol

I didn't go "cruisin' for boy"...didn't have the interest or the time. I was released from 7th hour classes, so I could go to work.

I worked a full shift, full time so I didn't get home until midnight. Then I had to do my homework. I would also get scheduled to work weekends.

Anyway, I saved up enough to buy a 1969 Chevrolet Impala that was about 12 years old. lol It was a "beater" but it never failed me. My car was a lighter color blue than the one pictured. It didn't have a record player, it had a cassette deck!

I had my younger brother convinced that there was a little hand in the player that would turn the cassette over to play side 2! He never could catch it in the act. happy02

Pogo I LOVE the Impala! The very first car I ever took out a loan t buy was a "69 Impala. Exactly like the one in the pic. except it was grey. It was about 23 years old when bought it. 82,000 original miles immaculate. $1200! Oh, I still miss that car. frown

We (friends and all) used to 'drag main' when I was a teenager. You'd start at one end of town at the teen center, and drive the approx. 2 miles thru town hollering at everyone parked along the way. Turn around at the grocery store and do that til you either 1. found someplace else to go, 2. ran out of gas, or 3. the cops got tired of watching everyone and declared the night over. 2 and 3 were what ususally happened. rofl

They sure were goin' little cars, weren't they! Mine never gave me a bit of trouble.

Dragging main was popular with the kids in my town, too. You'd often see kids parked in the grocery store parking lot, havin' a gab fest.
('Course the store was on main street, so one could see and be seen. lol) Then they'd go drag main some more. smile

This was the first and only car I ever bought new. 1966 Pontiac Lemans. I bought it 4 months before I was married. My Dad cosigned for me asking first if I was planning on marrying soon. No way Dad but of course I did. I was all of 19. This is just a picture, it's not mine but mine looked just like this one.

I was out of college and 22 years old when I bought my first car ever...this is the closest picture I could find...it's a 1977 or 78 Olds Cutlass. I must be getting senile; I can't recall the exact model year! This was the color, though...
