Midnightmom
Last time I tried to use my pressure canner, it spit and sputtered water from around the lid. Can I use some oil around the lid gasket to make a better seal until I can afford to buy a new one??? (gasket, not canner ) Link to comment
Dee
My canner does that often but still works good. The jiggler jiggles and things seal. Link to comment
Jeepers
Mine has done that too. I take the lid off, no pressure has built up, and put it right back on again. That has always solved the issue. Sometimes I think the gasket shifts around when I turn the lid upside down to put it on the canner. Maybe getting wet and heating up the gasket on the first time around helps it hold tighter when I put the lid back on? I don't know. Try taking the lid off and putting it back on. A real pain I know. JUST MAKE SURE THERE IS NO PRESSURE BUILT UP BEFORE TAKING THE LID OFF Link to comment
kappydell
i would not oil the gasket, i read somewhere it degrades the rubber. the sputtering is just the water escaping until the gasket swells up and seals. normal, as long as it does seal eventually. Link to comment
Violet
Take the gasket out and put in hot water. Then stretch it and then put it back in. See if that works. Oil will make the gasket degrade, but if it is already bad, that would be ok. However, that is usually done for one that sticks, not because it is too loose or won't seal. If it leaks, I would not use it if you can't get it stop leaking. Link to comment
