Tweets from the Titanic

Sunday, April 15th, 2012 marks the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. People are commemorating the occasion in all kinds of ways.

One of the more interesting methods is being used by the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. It will be using Twitter to broadcast the Titanic's original wireless transmissions.

When the Titanic was built, it was the most modern vessel of its kind. It included an advanced wireless telegraph machine.

By following #TitanicMMA on Twitter today, you'll be able to read the exact messages read by operators in 1912 as they were received. Tweets will begin at 11:55 p.m. Newfoundland Standard Time.

The iceberg warning tweets from other ships have begun. There are replies from the Titanic's officers/operators.

Experience the RMS Titanic wireless messages in real time

On Sunday, April 15, 2012, it will be 100 years since the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic. To commemorate this significant anniversary, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic will use Twitter to broadcast the vessel's original wireless transmissions.

Ten years prior to Titanic's sinking, the first wireless transmission to cross the Atlantic from North America was sent from the Marconi station in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Much like the short messages we send today via text, instant messaging or Twitter, wireless transmissions bridged distances between people and made it possible to share information across the world.

As the largest and grandest ocean liner of her time, Titanic was equipped with the most modern wireless technology available. When disaster struck, that technology proved invaluable as it was crucial in saving many passengers and, also, provided the world over with the stunning news of the loss.

This year, starting at 11:55 pm Newfoundland Standard Time (NST) on April 14, follow the hash tag #TitanicMMA and experience the magnitude of Titanic through the same wireless messages operators received in 1912.

Important notes for 2012

o The hash tag for the 2012 real time account on Twitter is #TitanicMMA.

o The real time account of the disaster will begin at 11:55 pm NST.

o Newfoundland Standard Time (NST) will be used because of the ship’s geographic location at the time of the sinking

o Prior to the start of the real time account, eight iceberg warnings that preceded the sinking in 1912 will be posted on Twitter.

My aunt was born on the 16th, the morning after the Titantic sunk. We were celebrating her birthday today instead of Monday because so many relatives wanted to come and the weekend worked out better for most. She kept telling us she wished we were planning her funeral instead of her 100th birthday party and she got her wish. She passed away on the 6th, 10 days before her birthday. So today was her funeral instead of her 100th birthday party.

This aunt was so loved by all. At the funeral was 1 sister, 2 brothers and 1 sister in law. There are 42 of we first cousins and I can't tell you how many of us were there, along with our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.

Truthfully there were few tears shed. She was so ready to go and had wanted to for a long time. She will be sorely missed but we rejoice that her suffering is over. We laugh because the little sweetie pie won by not having to have that birthday party. I'm sure she had a big smile on her face when she realized she got the best of us all AGAIN.

RIP in peace my beloved aunt and tell Mom and Dad hi for me when you see them.
