  1. For me another gathering is over. I just got back home safely and trying to digest everything that I experienced. I'll post pics as soon as I can. John
  2. Let me sit the record straight on this "chili reciepe", I brought all of the goodies to make MY chili and then I was informed that "SHE" was going to make it "HER" way. So if it don't turn out right then I am innocent! Lovinit and Hubby got here and Mt.Rider came sliding in about 4:30. Everyone is settling in and getting ready to go feed the animals before dinner. GunPlumer, Darlenes son, and me cut, split, hauled, and stacked lots of wood today. Something bit me on my arm during the night so I am not happy about the pain but hey, I will survive... More breaking news when it happens John
  3. Hey guys, I,m using MomM,s tablet for this since Darlene,s computer kicked me out I will have lots of pictures to share but not until I get back home Sunday. Gotta go feed the puppies and help put down more gravel. John
  4. I'll throw in 5 boxes of 7.62x49, a box of 22lr, and a few loose rounds of .45 acp. It's not much but it will help out. John
  5. I wonder if they can stop a person from taking donations for items? Instead of a selling items take donations for them. John
  6. I have some in mylar bags and in jars. I think mine are about 4 years old and still good. John
  7. Oh trust me when I say it will not be as easy as it was last time. It is time to ramp up our security! I would suggest that everyone might want to make sure that they are up to date on their canning terminology, demonstrating proficiency in field stripping their personal carry weapon, the life expectancy of properly stored food items, and be able to identify herbs by picture. A failure on any of these or others that WILL be done could result in in-depth training and a delay in their participation with the group. Oh, and not to mention lack of sleep due to the training. John
  8. The good Lord willing I'll be there. Who else would can lead the night manuvers. John
  9. Darlene when I used to do milking we always milked from the right side. Also if the cow keeps kicking you can put a set of hobbles on her rear feet if she will let you. Usually after she gets use to the hobbles they will stop kicking, at least that's my experience. John
  10. Not to worry Granny, I have been thinking along the same lines as you. I have been in touch with some of the other guys coming and we have everything planned out. Mum is the word, we don't want him too skerred. John
  11. I always cook mine first to make sure they are hydrated. Look here: http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_04/beans_peas_shelled.html John
  12. Now there you go Mt. Rider, spoiling my plans. I have not made one mention about the night manuvers this time. I just knew that I could talk Melissa into at least a two mile hike since she would be standing near me and if I happened to just wander off a little ways she would follow. No one else seems to want to do any manuvers and I just knew I would have at least one person to keep me company this time! Hey Melissa, if ya wanna go on manuvers remember to pack your camo. John
  13. I'm off all the time & they are letting me come. John
  14. I am trying to learn more about herbs but I have no clue as to what books to get. There are 599 books listed at Amazon. I have looked at all of the post here are there are quite a few good ones but I want more, I'm greedy Can anyone tell me where to start? John
  15. When we would eat them fresh, my mother would cook them with a couple slices of bacon for flavoring. They did't cook near as long as dried ones. As far as putting them in the dehydrator, I would think it should work fine. Look here for info on drying them: http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/dry/csu_dry_vegetables.pdf This does not tell the blanching time but I would use the information on green beans to process limas. Maybe Violet will stop in and tell us what to do. John
  16. Good to see you again Pixie! John
  17. Now that looks good enough to eat. Great job! John
  18. I think a pig roast would be super!!
  19. "Wormguy, just out of curiosity why didn't the other guy, his wife and daughters help? We've learned a few things from hard experiences too. I'm glad you made it through the summer!" The other guy stated that he didn't have the time and was too tired, busy, etc. The wife is a hairdresser and has a bad back, the children are well...children and I didn't see what I considered effort to encourage or make them help. The guy does have a stressful job but I don't think he understands that when things need to be done they have to be done then and not when a person is not tired. Also weekends are not to rest up, they are there also to work when it is needed. Next year he will not be included in the gardening at this location. He has made the comment that he feels that the ground is not good for crops. He has a samll garden at home and everyone does help out there but I guess it is a different story when you can walk out the back door and work for 15-20 minutes instead of driving 25 minutes one way and having to work for and hour or two. Yes, I was very dissapointed in the lack of help all around. I had high hopes that we would have a great season but alas, it was not to be. I am going to take some soil samples and get them tested so that next year I will be better prepared to plant the crops that will do the best. John
  20. I hate to say it but it's true. Lesson learned. John
  21. I'm confused, when a reciepe calls for 10 pounds of fruit do I weigh it before I peel, pit, & cut up or is it weighed before it's peeled, pited, or cut up? There is quite a bit of waste like when peeling pears or apples. Any one? John
  22. If I were alone and could stand the cold I would go to the Idaho, Montana area. Since I don't care for that much cold I would go to Northern Georgia, East Tennessee, East Kentucky, or West-West VA. That would put me in the hills so to say but there is good land there and folks tend do to help each other. I think in all of these places one could find land at a decent price. I just wish I could do it. John
  23. Yep. I'm lazy. I do the raw pack that way all I have to do is skin the chicken and cut off the extra fat. I give the bonesto Samson. John
