  1. Suncat..............your apple story reminded me of a little adventurewe had when our children were younger! Middle son had somehow managed to flush a TP holder down the bowl and into the "S" (?) pipe (trap?). It was the kind that was plastic and 'vented' for the air-fresher ball it contained: so water could go through it, but not solids - including TP. We tried the plunger; we tried the snake; we called a friend who owned a house and "knew about these things".....................we hoped. Did I mention that we lived in an apartment??? It's a good thing it was a two bathroom apt! We were all able to use the master bath while we figured out what to do about the other one. Anyway, our friend told us we would have to remove the toilet in order to reach the obstruction from the 'other' side. We couldn't afford to pay a plumber to do the work, so we decided to "do it ourselves." Let the circus begin!!! We got the new wax ring, etc, removed the toilet, and took it outside to the parking lot. WHY did we take it outside you ask? WHY didn't we put it in tub like you did? NO IDEA. So here we are out on the asphalt trying to remove the TP holder by reaching it from underneath the base. No success I was really wedged tightly in the trap. This is where it gets really good..................center ring attraction good! One of us (me & dh) had read somewhere (internet possibly?) that we should squirt lighter fluid (we used Kingsford) into the toilet and let the heat from the flame MELT the PLASTIC TP holder which we could then remove.............because ................presumably ............ it would no longer be wedged in. My husband, being a born 'pyromaniac' thought this was a wonderful idea. Are you "seeing" this? The whole family is outside, the porcelain throne is lying on its side on the asphalt in parking lot. I squirt the Kingsford down the throat of the device, my husband approaches with the sacred flame and tosses it into the bowl. Smoke and flames and ash from melted plastic start billowing out BOTH ends of the unfortunate device. When the flames extinguish we move in to see if the TP holder can now be removed. Alas. it doesn't matter.........................a crack develops and the whole trap falls off onto the pavement. We had to buy a new throne and install it ourselves..................cause we STILL couldn't AFFORD a plumber!!!
  2. Found this tip at a "life hacks" site and thought it could be quite useful if you don't have or don't want to use a chemical solution. You probably have these items anyway: 2 antacid tablets (any brand???) 1 c white vinegar Drop the tabs in the clogged sink, pour in vinegar, wait for the 'magic' to happen. No, I haven't tried it. But if you do, let us know how it worked.
  3. Found this tip at a "life hacks" site and thought it could be quite useful for helping to "preserve the harvest" of strawberries. I always found it a pain to remove the leaves and core out of a strawberry--even with one of those pincher tools that were made for the job. This looks so much easier. You should experiment with different widths of straws to find the best one.
  4. Search results: Melaleuca (Tee Tree Oil) 9. Athlete’s foot: Melaleuca works wonders! Apply neat (meaning undiluted) to affected areas twice a day. 10. Toe fungus: Melaleuca to the rescue again. Dab the affected toenail with a saturated q-tip morning and night. Lavender oil: An analgesic (pain reliever), antiseptic, and immune stimulant. It is thought to be good for skin care and to promote healing, especially in burns, bruises, scrapes, acne, rashes, and bug bites. Lavender has a calming effect, and is used for insomnia, stress, and depression. It has been reported effective as a decongestant through steam inhalation. Lavender oil may have use as an antifungal agent, and may be used for Athlete's foot or other related conditions.
  5. I was going to post the article, but it is better suited for "The Edge" than here. But, the knowledge that the information is out there is appropriate here. By Lizzie Bennett On September 17, 2014 URL to article: http://www.thedailysheeple.com/dealing-with-ebola-infected-corpses_092014

  7. I just made my first pot of "official" bone-broth............ie....I used some vinegar to help dissolve the bones. Not sure I like this method. My pot of chix broth was 'clear' until I added the vinegar, then it 'clouded' up; an effect I wasn't prepared for, nor crazy about. What I like the least however was the change in the taste of the broth. The only way it became better was to add lots of salt..............not that I don't like salt, I just didn't like the flavor of the vinegar in the broth.
  8. I don't make my split-pea soup with ham, I use chicken stock. I also like it creamy, not chunky. I used to process my finished soup in a blender to make it creamy, but that was very messy. The last time I made it, I used a stick blender to smooth it out. It wasn't quite as messy, but took a lot of time to make sure I didn't miss any areas of unblended peas. This time, I borrowed my neighbor's pressure cooker because I wanted soup "fast." It only took 10 minutes to cook up a pot of peas!!! And...............the pressure from cooking them turned them into a nice pile of creamy mush without me having to use either a blender or a stick-blender. Talk about easy!!! There are a few 'tricks' I discovered that you need to use when pressure cooking your dried peas. You do not have to pre-soak your peas before cooking. The peas still need to be rinsed and picked over before cooking. Adding veggie oil (I used olive oil) to the pot helps prevent "foaming" and clogging up your steam vent. Cannot fill the pot more than half-full when cooking. I processed/cooked 2 cups of peas per potful.....................three times. This made enough soup for 9 pints and 3 dinner servings. Yum. Instructions: Add 7 cups of water and 1 can (14.5 oz) of chicken stock to your pressure cooker. Heat to a simmer. Add enough oil to make an unbroken layer on top of the simmering liquid. Rinse and pick over 2 cups of dried split-peas. Add the rinsed peas to the heated liquid in the pot, cover with lid and close, but do not add the weight. Increase the heat under the pot until steam vents, then add the weight and reduce the heat to a point where the weight jiggles, but steam is no longer 'spitting-out' from underneath it. Cook for 10 minutes, then turn off the heat and wait for the pressure to release and the pot to cool. Turn contents out into a large conventional pot. REPEAT process two more times! Recipe: Remove cooked contents to a large conventional pot. Add each pot of peas to the larger pot as they are cooked. If the soup needs to be thinned out add more cans of chicken stock to the mix. (I added 2 more) At this point it was time to add the seasonings . . . to taste. Since I cooked the peas without adding onion or celery to the pot, I addedonion salt celery salt a touch of garlic salt canning salt ground black pepper Heat to a simmer, then process for canning. When I enjoyed it for dinner, I added a pat of butter to my bowl and stirred it until it melted and 'disappeared.' It was the BESTEST BOWL of split-pea soup I have EVER eaten!!!
  9. I've noticed the same 'early' trend for the last few holidays too. I think it is because people are so cash poor that they have to s...p...r...e...a...d out their spending for these events. Thank you Mr. President for a thriving economy. [/sarcasm]
  10. (edited)................................... http://www.thecommonsenseshow.com/2014/06/29/pandemics-are-entering-the-us-through-the-southern-border/ Pandemics Are Entering the US Through the Southern Borderby Dave Hodges | June 29, 2014 5:39 am [1]Most of these people are not being screened before being released across the country. America is facing a health crisis of unparalleled proportions. We could be weeks away from an outbreak of several pandemics on our southern border which will lead to the United Nations emerging as a legitimized police force operating within the territorial boundaries of the United States, ostensibly here to meet the crisis. The Hint of a Coming Pandemic(s) to the United StatesPhoenix’s ABC affiliate, Channel 15[2], ran a story on June 6, 2014 in which the producers reported from McCallen, Texas. The news story expressed a serious and growing concern with regard to illegal immigrants crossing into the United States and the potential deadly health concerns associated with this mass migration. The report interviewed several U.S. Border Patrol agents who are gravely concerned about what’s coming over the border. What is coming according to Border Patrol agents are not just immigrants, but pathogens, constituted in the form of a viral outbreak, which could cause serious harm in the United States. The Channel 15 report quoted Chris Cabrera, a Border Patrol agent, who stated “We are sending people everywhere. The average person doesn’t know what’s going on down here”. Cabrera stated that Border Patrol agents are seeing illegal immigrants come over the border “with contagious infections”. Specifically Cabrera stated that “There’s been an outbreak of scabies that’s been going on for the past month”. [3]Dr. Jane Orient In an exclusive interview with Breitbart,[4] Dr. Jane Orient, an internal medicine specialist and the Executive Director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons[5] (AAPS), stated that by admitting these huge groups of children who come from countries where medical screenings are minimal and hygiene is poor, the United States is at risk for epidemics of serious diseases and viruses that the nation has not seen in years and for which we have no immunity. Well, this is America and of course we are screening these people right? Not according to Border Patrol agent Cabrera where he again told Channel 15 “..the sickness doesn’t stop at scabies… We are starting to see chicken pox, MRSA staph infections and we are starting to see different viruses.” In other words, the Border Patrol does not understand what they are dealing with. This is an unmitigated disaster in the making. The Experts Speak but Nobody Is ListeningIn the same interview with Breitbart,[4] Dr. Jane Orient stated that, “Tuberculosis (TB) is the single most dangerous disease because it is highly contagious and can be easily picked up at the mall, at a school, or on the bus… Cases coming from south of the U.S. border can be very resistant to medications. They don’t respond to traditional antibiotics, and the few drugs they may respond to are often toxic, with lots of side effects… Legal immigrants have always been required to undergo health screenings Orient continued, “but these kids coming have no medical screenings… They’re likely coming here with a number of infectious diseases that will spread like wildfire.” Interviewed by The Monitor[6], Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet, stated that the immigrants coming across the U.S. border, from countries which have third world health care and primitive screening, we will find many immigrants carrying the highly contagious and deadly TB as well as measles. She also expects to see a multitude of hepatitis, malaria, Chagas disease[7], a parasitic infection, and dengue fever[8] cases. Dr. Vliet conclusively stated that “A public health crisis, the likes of which I have not seen in my lifetime, is looming”. Border Patrol agent, Chris Cabrera heightens the health concerns when he describes the quarantine procedures at the detention centers. He told ABC that the symptomatic people are moved to one side of the facility and they are only separated by a yellow tape from the so-called healthy immigrants. Cabrera also stated that SEVERAL Border Patrol agents are often infected with scabies. The spread of these pandemics has likely already begun. Meanwhile, these immigrants, meaning no harm to America, are being transported by DHS and ICE all across the country. This is how one creates asymptomatic carriers of deadly diseases. 11. By Granny Spear When you live in the country flies are ever present. Living without a fridge means that even though they can’t get to the food in the safe they can smell it, and that means they come inside the house and buzz around annoying everyone. Let me tell you about food safes: They are a sturdy wooden cupboard, with a very fine mesh door that allows the air to circulate. There were two shelves in ours, a marble one at the bottom, and a mesh one supported by a wooden frame in the middle. By making sure it’s in a shady spot in the scullery food stays cool and safe from flies. Right, where was I? Yes, flies, okay. We used three methods of keeping flies away. First we set fly traps outside the house near the doors and windows. They are easy to make. Take a jam jar with a lid and punch some holes in the top, large enough for flies to get through. Wipe a little raw meat, such as bacon around the inside of the jar. Fill the jar about one third with apple cider vinegar and screw the lid on. You place these near the doors and windows. The flies are attracted to the smell of the meat. They go through the holes but can rarely get out again. You will be amazed at how many flies you will catch. Flies are not keen on some smells. bay leaves, lavender and cloves, are a good combination I found. The bay leaves and cloves would just be bashed a little, to bruise them and let more smell out. The lavender needed to be very well crushed to release the oil. The crushed lavender goes in with the cloves and bay. I kept a small bowl of this near the safe to disguise the smell of the food inside. I put the same mixture into a small basket hung on the inside of the outhouse door. Some summers just seemed to be bad years for flies and there would be far more of them than usual. A fly lure works well. Ernie would take a piece of waste meat, a chicken head maybe, and put it under an upturned plant pot way down at the bottom of the garden beyond the outhouse pits. He put the pot on an old dinner plate which stopped maggots escaping. The flies would swarm to it. Often they would not be able to get out of the upside down pot which was a bonus! I’m sure there are other ways to deter flies, but these worked for me so I stuck with them. Well that’s it for now. 18. At first I was going to post this in the humor forum, but then I thought, "Maybe somebody could actually use this method when processing a lot of apples for canning or dehydrating," so I put it here instead. Granted this won't work in a 'grid down' world (unless you use the battery type), but still, it looked like fun.
