You answered "Oxygen" The correct answer is "Nitrogen

  5. Sandi Patti sings National Anthem at rededication of the Statue of Liberty................ *Unofficial stanza written by Claire Cloninger And still we can see, as the years have gone by, there's a dream in our land like a flame that keeps burning. And the lantern of hope from the harbor still shines. Those who seek freedom's dream, to its light are still turning. Now we look to the skies and we lift up our eyes, for we know with the dawn we will see our flag rise. And this is our star spangled banner unfurled as a sign to the free and a hope to the world. *Claire Cloninger was commissioned by the national Statue of Liberty Centennial Committee to write a new second verse to "The Star-Spangled Banner" which was used as part of the centennial celebration. Sandi Patti had recorded the national anthem for a benefit album for the Ellis Island Foundation. She had no idea she was going to be featured by ABC-TV. <http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1986-09-25/features/8603110651_1_sandi-patti-national-anthem-songs> According to Peter Jennings, somebody at ABC had heard her recording and brought it to the attention of the producers. Subsequently, they decided to use Patti`s recording, set to a montage of American scenes, to close its Statue of Liberty broadcast. <http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1986-09-25/features/8603110651_1_sandi-patti-national-anthem-songs> And suddenly, America discovered Sandi Patti.

  12. Violet- I pllan to pre-cook my corned beef too. I'm assuming it would be ok to fill the jars with the water it was cooked in to retain that unique taste. What I usually do is separate the meat from the broth and chill it in the fridge for a day or so, then skim the fat off of the broth. I cold pack the meat into the jars, add the broth, seal the jars and start them in the canner in cold water. When the water in the canner heats up I put the lid on and process for meat in my size jars. Do you see any problems with this method?
  13. ==================================================================== Any comments or opinions? (I really wish quoted material was better outlined/set off from "normal" post material. I am using the "elegia" format.)
  14. Being Green... Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truly recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But too bad we didn't do the green thing back then. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?
  15. Thank you for the list. I found a few that I was interested in.

  19. A married couple is travelling by car from Victoria to Prince George. Being seniors, after almost eleven hours on the road, they were too tired to continue and decided to take a room. But, they only planned to sleep for four hours and then... get back on the road. When they checked out four hours later, the desk clerk handed them a bill for $350.00. The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He told the clerk although it's a nice hotel; the rooms certainly aren't worth $350.00 for four hours. Then the clerk tells him that $350.00 is the 'standard rate'. He insisted on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appears, listens to him, and then explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference centre that were available for us to use. "But we didn't use them," the husband said. "Well, they are here, and you could have," explained the Manager. The Manager went on to explain that the couple could also have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel is famous. "We have the best entertainers from New York , Hollywood , and Las Vegas perform here," the Manager says. "But we didn't go to any of those shows," the husband said. "Well, we have them, and you could have," the Manager replied. No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, the husband replied, "But we didn't use it!" The Manager is unmoved, and eventually the husband gave up and agreed topay. As he didn't have the check book, he asked his wife to write the check. She did and gave it to the Manager. The Manager is surprised when he looks at the check. "But ma'am, this is made out for only $50.00." "That's correct. I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with me," she replied. "But I didn't!" exclaims the Manager. "Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have." Don't mess with senior citizens..... They didn't get there by being stupid.

  21. One of the 'tricks' for reducing the over-sudsing in a washing machine is to pour in some fabric softner. Are you sure you are not compromising the ability of your detergent to clean effectively?
  22. Get the book "Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health," by Dr. William Davis The wheat of today is not the same grain our forebears ground into their daily bread. It has changed dramatically in the past 50 years under the influence of agricultural scientists.Genetic changes have been induced to increase yield per acre.Wheat has undergone a drastic transformation to yield something entirely unique, nearly unrecognizable when compared to the original, and yet called by the same name: wheat. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50138376n
