  1. I just ran across this today so I haven't had time to play with it and might not until later in the summer, but I wanted to share while it was fresh in my mind. http://www.lureofthelabyrinth.net/runtime/shell/index.php
  2. If you get an antenna and live within 20 or so miles of the tv station, you might be able to pick it up. I had gotten a digital antenna to try and get rid of satellite, but I live just far enough that it didn't work well. Our internet doesn't work well sometimes either so going down to just Internet tv didn't work either.
  3. The premise is a group of people set out to save the world 15 years after an emp. http://www.nbc.com/revolution/ Looks like I probably won't get to watch it unless Castle changes it's time or they put reruns online.
  4. Thank you ! @Daylily good question! I have read that some other plants that have been hybridized, don't retain their usefulness and maybe harmful.
  5. You can get a USB to Micro adapter if it the keyboard doesn't come with one. I haven't used one, but I've looked at them. Let me do a little more checking on this one. I've looked at keyboards that came up in a search for a keybord for kindle fire, but I didn't go much further. I haven't found a definitve answer on if they actually work with the fire, but there are adapters to make the usb fit. The other thing I was going to tell you is when I use the Fire, I turn it upside down with screen rotation on. I found if I don't turn it upside down, I tend to hit the off button at the bottom. I usually lock it as well, especially if I'm laying down. I don't like the screen rotating if I change posistions. Luckily the skin I bought for it looks the same upside down as it does right side up.
  6. There are still good people out there. DS's birthday was this past weekend. He chose to go to a habichi grill that does a fruit boat and sing in Japanese for birthdays. The mom of the other family at our table was celebating her birthday as well. They were short handed and only had one boat. The waitress asked if we wanted to share. I said no because sharing food with people you don't know and it wasn't a buffet with dedicated serving utensils wasn't very appealling to me, and I know the boat split among 7 people would leave only about 2 pieces per person and that my kids would be disappointed. We decide to go with the ice cream option instead. When it came out, the boat came to us and the woman let ds know it was her birthday gift to him.
  7. I forgot to add to the above, if anyone is looking at buying an ipod check out the Samsung Galaxy players. The 5" one has a screen (larger than an entire ipod) and is only $40 more than the 8g ipod and has expandable memory and can play flash. They just came out with new ones. I think there's one about the same size as the ipod, which IS much more pocket friendly. If dd had gotten hers before I got the fire, I might not have gotten the fire. It's nearly as big and can do most of her school work that's on the pc on her player, plus has access to kindle and nook books. I don't look for free books there very much, even though I can get them on my phone because to me the selection isn't as good and I have a harder time finding them. If you want to personalize your kindles or almost any device check out http://www.decalgirl.com/. They have 100's of designs to choose from. They are removable and last. DS has had some on one of his devices for years. It is one he doesn't play as much anymore, but they are still stuck and look just as good as when he put them on. I got a Klear Kase for the Fire. It is waterproof and provides protection from falls. Since it's clear, the decals show through as well. It was kind of pricey, but worth the protection with dd using it - she was really hard on electronics until this past 6 months or so.
  8. @ Jeepers - Aww shucks Thanks Jeepers. @ Mt_Rider - no ipods don't have sd cards. I think they did that to make you spend more money to buy the larger storage capacity. They cost about the same to make, but they jack the price up for the higher storage ones. If you change your email address, just use the one you signed up with to sign in with Amazon. You can change it in the my account section. @ Arby - could you use the gift card toward the food saver? You can get a usb keyboard to type directly to your Fire. You could use Google Documents for free and have access from just about any device. I have had trouble with format staying the same if I transfer it to an office program, but I think they fixed it. I haven't used it too much since I lost my job at the school a couple of years ago. There's also a quick office app. I've got the free one to read docs, but I think the paid version might let you create them. Yes it does rotate so you can read in landscape mode instead of vertical. If you pull down the little gray bar at the top, you can turn on and off the screen rotation.
  9. You know that made me want to. Probably should've listened to the warning , but I've never been good at doing what I'm told. Ask my mom.

  11. The color over the reading material can work for anyone, even if they don't have a problem with reading. The different colored background makes it easier to see and causes less eye strain. My favorite color is pink and a shade of pink is what I determined works best for me, but I don't use it. I'll have to ask my speech therapist friend what the website is to test for a color without buying things. You could do it on your own, by using a word processing program and changing the background color. You can get different colored overlays at some school supply stores and test them in the store. This is probably a better way because the color is true and the lighting is more like what you would normally use. The ones on the computer can give you an idea, but they aren't exactly the same as what you can buy. Another cheap way to test is get colored see through plastic 3 ring binder dividers. My friend did this once for a language disability child she was working with. Target sometimes carries the dividers in the $1 section, especially at the beginning of the school year. Dyslexia alone will not qualify you for an IEP in most places, as it's considered a classroom/school level problem. It has to be accompanied by a special ed serviceable diagnosis. The speech person in the district maybe be able to test for language disorder or ADHD may in some circumstance help in that qualification. I'll have to ask my friend what the name of the book was I gave her. It's about dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia (problems with fine motor coordination and writing), adhd and a few other diagnoses being all related and caused by the way the brain develops in the 3rd month of development and there was no controlling it if I remember correctly. It says there's never one diagnosed without at least one other diagnosed. One activity that the book suggested was having a child walk up and down a few stairs backwards. Somehow it retrains the brain. The book didn't go into a lot of detail on what to do because he wanted people to go to his clinics, but it was informative on the cause of the problems and how they are related. Another thing I learned when I worked in a school for helping dyslexic kids was to use mulitsensory techniques - letters made out of sandpaper for them to trace with their finger trays of salt or sand for them to write in moving while learning letting them stand if they need to - ask for a seat at the rear of the room so they can let them fidget with a quiet toy like a stress ball as long as they aren't throwing it - one teacher thought I was crazy but the complaints about the child sure went down let them doodle while the teacher talks use taste to help them associate the letters to - this one I never saw work and have wondered about many times I know I was told something about candy letters let them write cursive - it can't be written backwards give them oral testing - for some dyslexic kids it's not that they write/read backwards it's that they can't get it from their heads to their hand to the paper do jumping jacks or other movement as they learn times tables computer games sometimes work well with them using pictures to help them remember let them draw a cartoon as a memory aid teach them organizational techiniques - how to organize a binder, note cards, graphic organizer - google this one as there are too many to list here teacher and parent initial an assignment book to make sure it's all getting written down and done. As I remember other things I can post them. It's been a couple of years and I've only had one cup of coffee, so my recall is a little so this morning.
  12. The rubber around the door gets just as nasty. It's easier to see and clean though. Reading this reminds me I need to run dishwasher detergent through mine again. I had started doing this a few years ago. I add the dishwasher detergent and let it run on hot. I think the orginal instructions said you could add extra bleach because it's in the dishwasher stuff anyway. I have to find the exact directions for that part. I usually just add the detergent.
  13. Thank you! Hope your's is happy as well!
  14. They will never completely disappear unless amazon does or you delete them from your amazon account through the website. When you delete them from your device they are archieved at amazon. You aren't limited to one device either. You can put them on as many devices as are linked to your account. You can loan them to friends 1 time total I believe as well. I haven't researched the cloud thing too much. I think it lets you read them from internet without downloading it to a device or app. I wasn't too interested since most of my books are already downloaded on at least one device. Until I started downloading reference books and 100 yr old world and American history books for dd next year to get a better history imo up until the early 1900's I stayed at around 50% on having read what I get. I skim at least the first part of most the reference and cookbooks. I'm a fast reader (not speed reader though) and can get through several during a tv show that way. A typical paperback takes me less than a day if I'm interested and have the time or stay up late. Mt_RIder - 8g isn't really 8g after you figure in system requirements. If you don't have apps or music I'd say conservatively you could store at least 5-6000. I read somewhere that devices might slow down after 2000. I know on the regular kindle you can make folders. I haven't been able to figure it out on the fire or phone. Since the kids have devices now, I haven't tried to make folders on the pc. I just wish you could make folders in the archieve so I didn't have to remember the name or scroll through all of them to find the book I'm looking for there. I've wondered too if amazon would put a limit on the number you can obtain free or archieve in the future.
  15. Ereaders can handle 1000's of books. I googled it because I wasn't sure the exact number. I found out you can move books from kindle to your pc/flash drive attached to the pc when the kindle is connected to it. There seems to be an estimate of 1mb/book which makes ABOUT 1000/GB! Specs say about 3500 books on a kindle. Nooks only hold about 1500 BUT has an slot for memory cards. The more memory you have the more you can store. If you delete a book off of your device, it is archieved at Amazon (I assume Nook is the same way) and you can download it at anytime. Audio books take more room and you can't store as many of them.
  16. Have them and Lori Still uses them! The cat will come a running when she hears that 'crack' because she knows there are always little chips that mom will give her to eat. Yes that is also the cat that we have to go outside in the winter and get her bowl full of snow so she can eat it. And if it starts to snow in the middle of the night , she will come to bed, wakes me up and then race downstairs to sit by the 'snow bowl'. There's still some in my grandmother's things I think. Amazon, and some other stores still sell them, although I doubt their made as well as they used to be. Vermont Trading Co sells them as well. They're one of my favorite window shopping websites. Tney have a lot of the old tyme stuff. http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/store/jump/productDetail/Kitchen/Aluminum_Ice_Trays_-Set_of_2_Trays-/H2041?searchid=7SMCGGFD&feedid=googleproductsearch&jt=1&js=100&jsid=21345&jcp=Google%20Product%20Search&utm_source=Google%2BProduct%2BSearch&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%2BProduct%2BSearch&gdftrk=gdfV21961_a_7c336_a_7c4822_a_7cH2041_d_39701
  17. The Organized Kitchen: Keep Your Kitchen Clean, Organized, and Full of Good Food-and Save Time, Money, (and Your Sanity) Every Day! [Kindle Edition] http://www.amazon.com/The-Organized-Kitchen-Food-ebook/dp/B006N5AQ1O/ref=zg_bs_154606011_2 Don't know how long it'll be free.
  18. Just realized it's not free anymore. It's $.99 or free to borrow with Prime.
  19. Thanks Cat! I haven't had/taken time to check amazon lately. The push is on to finish getting the boys ready for their hike next month, because dd and I leave for the Girl Scout anniversary in DC the 1st week of June and from there until about the middle of July it's drive, pick up, drive, drop off, lather, rinse and repeat.
