Fritz_Monroe
I was going to order a copy of the Ball canning book. I went to Amazon but there's a couple different ones listed. I want the one that everyone seems to consider the "bible" of canning. Is it the book with the cheese cake on the front? Could someone post a link to the correct verson of the book? I want to make sure I get the best one. Link to comment
Violet
That is the one. http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/bluebook.htm They also have a larger one that is called the Complete Book of Home Preserving. It has some more up to date sort of recipes in it. If you need the basic one, then stick with the Ball Blue Book. Link to comment
westbrook
Wal-Mart usually carries them --- seasonal!!!!!! when they have their canning shelf. Usually over by pots and pans where the ice cream maker is >shrug< not where I would put them but hey not my store! if it was.. the canning would be front and center! there is usually one display box or 25 shoved in there. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT DOLLARS????? are they out of their Freakin' minds?????? Exactly what brought up the question. I was there also and saw $108 and had to ask. I've been to the National Center for Home Food Preservation. I'll check out the other site. I'm quite a ways away from a harvest, and have just completed my degree. (yah me!!!) So I have plenty of time for research now. For starting out I think I'll be water bath canning. Once I have the money for an AA, I'll go that way. Thanks again. Link to comment
Darlene
I'm not seeing no $108...although I do see $26... Link to comment
westbrook
now there is 2 for $108 and one for $26! I went to barnes and nobel and found similar.. are they kidding? $7.00! don't pay more. Link to comment
JCK88
At Lehman's, it is $5.95 for the Ball Blue Book. I am wondering if the used copy on Amazon was meant to be $1.08??? I can't imagine it was seriously listed at $108--except there were TWO of them at that price, LOL Link to comment
The MacKinnon
I just saw those two $108 listings and they've GOT to be mis-typed. I'm tempted to write the vendors and ask 'what's THAT about?' I have both books and this week, during Spring Break, I'm reading a chapter or so a day in the big one, along a chapter in Putting Food By. While there's an overlap in information, I'd recommend all 3 books. The smaller Ball book came with my water bath canning set which I got from Amazon last summer for under $50 with shipping, and the other 2 I got last fall, probably from Amazon, too, so I don't thing I paid more than $70 for the whole shebang, which would be the water bath canning set, and the 3 books. westbrook
$4.95 here http://www.freshpreserving.com/products/ba...reserving/2.php Link to comment
Fritz_Monroe
When I first saw that $108, I thought maybe there was some sort of special collector's edition. Thanks for all the input. Link to comment
Centexan
Recently I bought a paperback copy of Putting Food By at a thrift store for 50cents!!! It is the second addition, fourth printing, May 1980. Does anyone know how many updates have been made to this book?.....would the information be terribly outdated? Link to comment
HSmom
1980 is pretty outdated. OTOH, I love my 1976 Stocking Up from Rodale Press... but I do use more current canning recommendations. IIRC, the recommendations underwent a major overhaul in 1989. Link to comment
Violet
The USDA guide was again revised in 1994 and is currently waiting to be printed with an updated version. I don't know what the hold up is, but was told it should be out soon. Anything older than 1994 should not be relied upon for safety. Link to comment
