What Are You Canning Today??

Recommended Posts

@Midnightmom, if you like the corned beef and it is a good price where you are at, I'd buy what I could find.

I checked it out on line:

12 cans of the original chunky. 11.5 oz.

Amazon = $71.00

Wal-mart = 77.00

But Amazon has the 7 oz. 12 pack size for $52.00. Is that the size you have? That sounds more doable for me. I need to see some 11.5 oz and 7 oz. cans side by side to better judge for myself.

Product of Australia with no hormones and no antibiotics. That's a plus these days.

I have the 11.5oz can of the Corned Beef. It was $6.99/can at the Grocery Outlet store.

If you purchase any of the 12 packs online, it works out slightly cheaper than what I paid........................ but who has $100 to spend on cans of corned beef!!!!

However, I did find it available on Amazon by the can and that makes it $8.99/can (with Prime) .................. https://a.co/d/7i7MiHl

I saw that too. Still, $9.00 a can for probably only a couple of sandwiches plus the bread, kraut, cheese and mayo would be a pretty expensive sandwich. Even if it makes two.

Had to try it as I was curious about whether it would be like the "other" stuff. It t'weren't. It was surprisingly good, but undecided if I will spring for a few more cans or not.

Canned another 14 qts of venison/veggie soup yesterday. 2 batches of soup gave me 21 qts. Have at least 3 batches left to do. Gotta get more celery.

I ended up with 50 half pints of carrots. It's a lot but my canner holds 25 half pints so it was just two canner loads.

Canning for one is easier than canning for a whole family. That's for sure.

Between yesterday and today I got 24 pints of potatoes, green beans and smokies canned. I don't really care for the smokies after they are processed. They are sort of tough and gritty-ish, but they make the veggies taste really good. I eat them anyway. I only put 4 links cut in half in each jar this time. I can't really recommend canning them by themselves though. But 4 in a pint is doable. For me.

Tomorrow, or this weekend, chicken veggie soup is planned.

Jeepers, you are doing great with all the canning. Hope you are boxing some of it up to go to Indy when you start to fully move there. It will be one less thing to worry about getting packed up.

I won't be canning anything again till maybe in middle of June.

I take a picture of them so I can post them here when I can get internet. I'm thinking of just going ahead and cancelling it. I'm not able to use it and I have the phone with internet now. I got rid of cable and I'm saving around $200. a month for not having a TV. I admit I miss it sometimes. But not $200 a month worth. Anyway, after I take a picture I put them back I the box they came in. Full jars sure are heavy even if they are only pints. I plan to transport them to Indy very carefully in the Jeep.

I could do most of the canning over there but over here I have a garbage disposal and a dumpster right up the street. Also Meijers just up the street if I need something. In indy, no disposal and I haven't started trash pick up yet and town is about 20 minutes away. Plus it's still been nice and cool here. I feel I'm getting a little ahead of the hot weather. I have the feeling I'm going to be busy this summer. But I want food!

@Jeepers, you should be able to add photos from your phone. Not sure if it’s the same as mine. I click “add files”, then “photo library”, then photos come up, click on which one(s) you want to add, click “add”, then they upload. Easy peasy. 😀

Thank you necie! I'll try it tonight when I have more time and can concentrate. I have my canning pictures and a few more to post. I've only ever done it from my computer but I'll try. :sEm_blush:

THANK YOU NECIE for helping me post pictures from my phone!  :hug3:

For some reason the pictures of my peas and my corn are no longer in my phone. I have 50 half pints of each of them. If I find them I'll post them too.

Jeepers, that looks really great. You have been really busy. No wonder your back is bothering you.  You put in a lot of work getting all that done.  Time for a break. Love the pictures.

Thank you ladies. But to be fair, I did them over a months time. Not all at once. I'd like to get most of it done before it gets too hot. It's already warming up here. My gas bill really reflects the energy usage too.  :(

I want to make some salsa using Mrs Wages mix. However, I do not want to water bath can it as I discovered what a disaster that can be if you don't have the basket to lift the jars into and out of the boiling water. The emptly jars magically disappear into the interior of the pot (was using my canner) and were hard to find to fish out to put onto the counter.  I even managed to drop one back into the water and splash very hot (not boiling) water onto my face! (A very cold wash cloth quickly applied saved me from blistering). The jars also tend to fall or tilt over once one is removed and the "support" from the other jars is gone!

Anyway, I don't want an enamel canning pot and I can't afford a steam canner so I've been searching ways to turn my PC into a steam canner. Came across a post by RoseRedHomestead that seemed to make sense so I went to Good Will to look for a glass lid that would fit my Presto. They had a canner on the shelf for sale and I tested the lids on that because it was the same size as the one I had at home. I found a lid for $3.99, but what the hey, I decided to buy the canner too as it was only $24.99!

Haven't made the salsa yet, but Leisa (SuttonsDaze) recently did a vid on basic equipment needed to start canning. At the end of the vid she threw in this statement; "No, you can't use your PC as a steam canner." But there was no explanation offered about WHY not, and personally, I believe it was a shot at the other channel. Anyway, I asked Leisa WHY you couldn't use it as a steam canner and, in reality, she "blew me off." No explanation, just a statement that they are different and "you wouldn't use your phone to drive your car."

Since then I've looked up how a steam canner works and found some info on a USDA site that makes me believe that RoseRed is correct: I can use my PC as a steam canner. BTW, most of the steam canners I have seen have a domed lid over a shallow bottom pan, but the one she has is a deep pot with a lid on top: same configuration as my canner set-up would be.

So, now I'm asking here: do you think RoseRed is correct?
