  1. Maybe diapers for her would help the future issues.
  2. Thanks. We're good so far, but got another good downpour today. Beats the drought we've been fighting for years.
  3. So. Much. Rain. Just took a drive out in the country ... I live in the suburbs, sigh ... and the fields are so saturated that water is running across the roads in all the low-lying areas. Lots of flatland here!!

I've always wanted to learn. It's on my list. In other news, we just got some yummy Wisconsin maple syrup from a farmer's market in Hill Country. We first tasted it last year. It was so good, we ordered in bulk this year!! Seriously the best syrup we've ever had!!!
  5. Wow WE2s!! That rain system is great. If you don't mind, where did you get the barrels? We have tried storing water in the past, but with no rain gutters on the house, the collection part is not easy ... especially in drought country!! Definitely have gutters on the to do list. Hope TEOTWAWKI doesn't happen before then!!! YIKES!!! Yours really look great!!

Interesting. Looks like a good project!
  7. Yes!!! Thank you. We are thrilled! Tired the straw in the storage bag trick!!!
  8. I picked up soup from a deli yesterday and on my way out, two small fawn came out of small patch of woods buffering the shopping center parking lot from a neighborhood in the heart of the city. So. Cute. That swath of woods is probably no more than 10 feet wide at its widest point.
  9. WE2, I would be interested in knowing which model you've researched if you come across that at some point. Thanks.
  10. Thanks y'all. I ended up looking at the new Wal-Mart here and they had one that holds the roll, which we wanted. We can use it with the jar attachments and that was our other priority. It doesn't have the retractable hose to use with their containers, but we have such limited cabinet space, we are okay with that. It was $139, so I grabbed it. When I got to checkout it rang up $99!! Bargain Day! Yay. I went ahead and ordered regular and wide mouth jar attachments. They were 10% off and free shipping at $20, so I got my daughter a set as well. All four and shipping for about $34. I did another order to take advantage of the BOGO sell and got two 11"x16' portion size rolls for $5 each and two 11"x16' expandable rolls for $7 each. Some of the regular rolls and bags come with the new machine and we already had one roll. So that should get us through summer maybe. Thanks for the input.
  11. Food Saver online store has a 20 percent off sale this weekend, BOGO on bags and rolls and free shipping over $20. I was going to buy a new vacuum sealer here locally and order the jar sealer attachments from them , but there seems to be a better variety online. So here's the question, what model Food Saver do you recommend. Is one inherently better than another. I know a lot of you have older models. I've been borrowing dd's. But we're biting the bullet with this sale. Any advise would be appreciated.
  12. It's so true. My husband's grandfather, known only as Joe Henry to several generations of the family, was actually named Henry Joseph. I discovered his birth certificate, which none of them had ever seen.
  13. I am curious if there are many on Mrs. S. who worry about quality of food issues such as grass-fed beef, organics, gluten free, dairy free, soy free and GMOs and how you address those concerns. We've been moving toward a prepared life ever so slowly, but still seem to be making progress in spite of life getting in the way. We are members of a local co-op where we have access to grass-fed beef and are utilizing that again. But it surely jacks the price of food way up. I would love to hear from you all on how you address these issues. Do any of you have to deal with gluten-free, dairy-fee, soy-free diets as we do? Do you eat paleo or other special diets? If so, what hurdles does that put before you and how do you overcome those. Just getting back into the swing of things, and this is some of what I've been mulling over.
  14. Question. What if you wanted to make this recipe in half pint instead of pints. Would you reduce the processing time? Or keep it at 15 min.?
  15. wow ... gonna pass this info on to family!!! Interesting!
  16. Thanks. She did say she was using old recipes handed down from an old family, so I guess that's why they called for 9%.
  17. I ran into someone getting canning jars the other day who said the recipes she was using (handed down) called for 9% vinegar. Do any of you use 9% vinegar? What do you use it on? I found some at HEB, but not sure if I need it. Getting ready to make some pickles and can tomatoes. Thanks.
  18. DD has a 7 month old (our first grandchild) yay!! anyway, we have wanted to plant an herbal "pharmacy" for awhile now and want to incorporate what she will need for the baby first and foremost. We are just starting a renewed research and I'm just wondering if anyone knows ... do the herbs that work for adults work for babies just in smaller amounts? If we could plant 10 herbs to begin with, what should they be .. keeping in mind the babygirl! Thanks for your help. This is going to be our project through the winter. Any help you may offer will surely be appreciated.
  19. DH did 8 quarts of pickles with cukes from our garden while I was away loving on our new granddaughter!!! yay!!
  20. This is just fantastic tMC!!! Loved the article ... you really are a beauty ... the book cover looks great ... the storyline sounds interesting ... I know it's gonna be a good read!!! Well done!!! I'm so proud of you and for you!!!
  21. It's been a very long week. I was sitting here wondering why you'd be drying hash brownies. too funny!!
