  1. I woke up one morning to find Amos patting 'something' under my covers. He had brought a mouse to play with and it either ran under the covers or he tucked it under for his own reasons. He liked to bring me his catch. Would have been nicer if he killed it first.
  2. When I was still eating commercially farmed meat, I never ate the fat. It was nasty. Now that I raise all my own animals, I eat the fat and it is good. I don't normally bother with "making broth". I usually can the meat, bone in and that makes the broth with the meat. For larger animals, like hogs I'll make broth since the bones are too big for the jar. I usually throw the goat bones to the dogs though since I'm not overly fond of goat meat. I feed goat to daughter. She loves it and it works for her diet. I frequently butcher boy kids within a couple of weeks since I dislike wasting the milk on them. Dairy bucklings aren't worth pouring all that milk into. Those bones fit nicely into my canning jars and make lovely meat jelly for daughter.
  3. So THRILLED to see everybody this morning! Thank you Ann!
  4. LOL, I'll plan to make one when I get there. Here, if I don't run the water constantly in the summer it comes out of the faucet hot enough to scald.
  5. Christy! Good to 'see' you! The inventor lives in Maryland, not exactly the warmest, sunniest part of the country. I'm planning to move to Kentucky as soon as my place here in Texas is sold.
  6. Coconut oil makes wonderful candy. It has a lower melting temp than butter and a better mouth feel.
  7. I am so going to make one of these when we get moved!
  8. In Philbe's original video, notice that he has a lot of smoke coming out. An additional course of bricks will help to stop it from smoking.
  9. http://rocket4774.tripod.com/retail_specials.htm http://www.refreshinglyfree.com/Zeolite-Bulk-Granules-25-pound-box Here are a couple of places that have it. You can hang bags in your air ducts or blow the loose granules into it.
  10. After you get the ducts clean, see about getting some zeolite granules to put in them. They reduce contaminants.
  11. Whatever is in the house is very likely to be in the ducts and the carpet. I eliminated the ducts here. I put in wall electric zone heaters, hard wired thru the breakers. They are nice because you can heat one area and you can have one room (daughter's) a lot warmer than the rest of the house. We use window air.
  12. How about an elevated deer blind with stairs down to the house underground? You can enclose it all around so it won't be obvious that there are stairs that continue down underground. There are deer blinds all over the woods here. Nobody pays attn to them.
  13. I have so much trouble with dust and mold allergies that I will NOT have carpet in the house. I have one small area rug that can be move outside to clean and the floor under it mopped. Otherwise I have tile and sheet vinyl. SO much cleaner.
  14. Well, if you want super, super low profile, get the classic: http://www.undergroundhousing.com/
  15. There shouldn't be insulation between the bath and the livingroom. You may not have to remove wood, I'd rip out the wall covering on the bathroom side if possible and have a look. If there is plumbing in that wall, you may have an ongoing leak. I once had a pin size leak in a fitting that eventually caused a mold problem. Had to rip out the wall and by then it had seeped under the floor covering and that had to come out too.
  16. http://www.rocketstoves.com/ I suggest you get this book and study it. It gives detailed instructions on building a wood heating and cooking stove that has little or no smoke left to exhaust. You still use a stove pipe as the moisture and some other gases should be vented to the outside.
  17. You can tack up a curtain for privacy. I'd rip the wall out if it were me. Put a fan in that window to blow the air out while you are getting something more definitive done. We went thru a flood just enough to wet the insulation under the mobile. I couldn't get anybody else to help me and had to make multiple trips crawling under there to rip out the wet insulation. It took me several months because I couldn't do much at a time and it kept raining. I couldn't crawl around in mud too well, let me tell you. I had major mold problems till the insulation was out.
  18. I use whey as the liquid in bread making. Also you can use it for the liquid in soup or to cook beans in.
  19. You know, if you became a loyal customer of someone selling eggs and/or milk near you, before TSHTF, then afterward, you would have first go at any available for sale. Particularly if you stocked up on extra grains that could be used for poultry or goat feed, you could likely barter for those items you needed from your dairy/egg supplier.
  20. You just have to compare prices. Some things one is cheaper, some things the other is cheaper. Deerslayer, there is a pool truck from Walton that comes down to Texas. I've ordered thru them several times. The contact person is in San Antonio. Last I ordered you needed 2000 # for your own drop. You can go in with other people and do a coop buy and get a drop. I'll look up the contact info if you PM me for it.
  21. Take it back and the package from what you cooked with. I think I've tried about every way possible to clean that taste out, but nothing worked.
  22. Praying! I think Martian may be in the path of the storm, but inland some. Haven't seen her today.
