  1. ALL insects are not killed at 130*, not even for 8hrs! I've even parched corn and had weevils crawl out and I held it in a 350* oven long enough to parch. I've had weevils in flour that sat in a hot truck cab for several days (forgot about it). That cab was hot enough that I could cook food on the dash board. Fowl mites are not killed at 130* either.
  2. Everything goes into the washer and then the dryer right away if it is washable. I will start putting books into zip locks then freezing them as I do buy used books frequently.

  4. Maybe you should get each of the kids one of these?
  5. Try a feed store for the baking soda, though from the prices I've seen, you are better off buying the one or two pound boxes. Just get half a dozen or so each trip to the store. Vinegar can be purchased concentrated at some feed stores too.
  6. I'm trying to find more ways to use the fresh cheese I made last summer and put in the freezer. This morning I made cheese and potato pancakes! Boil, drain and mash 3 large potatoes, mix with about 1/2 as much cheese as you have potato, beat two large eggs with about a cup of heavy cream (I'm trying to use up an abundance of cream too), stir into the cheese and potato mix, add enough flour to make a soft dough, (taste to see if enough salt) drop spoonfuls into a skillet with hot lard and flatten into pancakes. Fry till lightly brown on each side. I served them with salsa this morning, but you can put about any topping on them you like. Sweet or savory, either is good.
  7. The vibrator works a LOT better than pounding. I've done both with asthma. Wouldn't be without the vibrator now. I was using it today because I could feel a plug behind one of the scars on my lung (scars from lymphoma). The long handle is so you can use it on your own back. I don't have anybody to use it on my back for me and the long handle has been a life saver, literally.
  8. There are worse things in life than being single.
  9. We've had a pretty drastic temp drop here! I put out extra feed and swapped the brooder lamp for a higher wattage. Made sure the tarp was tied down on the hoop house. I really need to put two more sides on that thing. I have the north wind blocked but doesn't help a lot when it is from the NW or NE.
  10. Hugs, hon. I pray all goes well and the Father keeps you in His perfect peace.
  11. Decided not to chance the roads today, even though the company would have been nice, I'd rather be to home when the weather is bad. Trying to get stuff caught up in case the power goes down. Got behind with housework since I've been working outside a lot lately. Got a HUGE pile of brush and mesquite to burn if the weather ever cooperates!
  12. High wind warnings here all day tomorrow and I'm supposed to have brunch with friends. I'm planning on her taking these chicks and she needs me to check a goat that miscarried and has a retained placenta. So I really need to go. About 60 miles each way. One of them will pick us up so they will have two round trips to make.
  13. I have NEVER been able to 'chat' with more than one person on. I get too confused and dizzy. I don't know how you guys follow it.
  14. Everybody needs a long handled vibrator in their flu kit. Use it to loosen chest congestion so you do not get pneumonia. I recommended it to two friends this season. Once started to get pneumonia but started using the vibrator and has recovered. The other friend didn't think it would help and he is now spending his holidays in the hospital with pneumonia.
  15. Hi-dy! Pull up a chair and set a spell. Got a nice big glass of sweet tea for ya and a hunk a corn pone!
  16. I would rather have cheesecake than chicks right now! LOL I think a friend is going to come get these. I'm sure the hens are doing their best to turn all those eggs they've been hiding into more chicks though.
  17. My squirrel was coming in under the kitchen sink and bringing pecans, which it was stashing in odd places thru the house. I blocked it so he can't get into the house, but I think he is still getting in under the sink, just can't go any further. I need someone dependable to get under the house and really seal those spots that I can't reach! I've had several MEN under there but none seem capable of actually sealing a hole.
  18. Christy, so glad you have something better now!
  19. What I would suggest would be to make two plywood boxes, open on top, and put those on the bed frame. Cover the sides with quilted material from the fabric store. Make a lid from plywood, cover it with the same fabric and set it in place then put the mattress on top. You might find a way to fasten the plywood top down, but I think if someone was turning mattresses and foundations over, they are going to find your stash anyhow so it probably isn't really necessary to go to the extra trouble. Just be sure you can lift the top off easily. You might also want to make something to slide under the bed to store things in as well.
  20. I took the big tub out of the master bath here. There is a smaller tub in the other bathroom, left that one. I put a big shower in where the tub was in the master bath and removed the small rinky-dink shower. Now I have room for a deep freeze in the bathroom. The freezer wouldn't fit down the hall and make the turn into the spare bedroom. I just moved the chicks to the back deck in a jumbo dog kennel yesterday. I made them an electric hen with a cardboard box and 40 watt bulb that they could pop in and out of as they wish. I put a good inch of sand on the floor of the kennel for bedding and to keep it from flying off in a high wind gust (JIC) then put two heavy wool moving blankets over the lot. I can pull the blankets up in the day when it is dry. Rained a bit last night and this morn but the babies are cozy. They had outgrown their small brooder in the house and I was ready for them to be outside.
  21. Glad to see you home, force field and all!
  22. Hi Christy, hope you get over all the illness quickly! So sorry about the deaths. Hugs, hon.
