  1. If anybody from around here wants to take DD and meself along, I'll be more than happy to help with expenses. Looks like I'll have the does all dried off by then and if so, my neighbors can keep an eye on things and feed the crowd for me. I live in Milam county, Texas. Unfortunately I do not drive and don't do planes either.
  2. Been missing you! Pray all goes well with the surgery and recovery.
  3. I'd mix some oxy clean up and spray it. Let it dry well. A scrap of linoleum will help to keep it cleaner.
  4. I don't see much point in it, myself. Make pancakes, flat bread, biscuits, cornbread fresh as needed. Even if you don't have an oven, some things can be made in a skillet on top of the stove.
  5. Thanks! Couple things they carry that I need.
  6. Good for you! Yes, it is sad, but it was not your job to 'fix' your parents. Hopefully you can now have a calmer relationship with them, but if not, it is still not your fault. HUGS!
  7. FSRE_SS_2Microbiology.pdf (application/pdf Object) *IF* there are thermophilic bacteria in the canner, they are not pathogenic and the gov doesn't even consider them to be a problem. If you are worried about them, set the canner on the stove, dry and empty and get it a lot hotter than 250 and let it cool off. If you processed the jars as directed, where are the bacteria coming from that are supposedly growing in your jars? I've been turning the canner off and going to bed for years with no problem. The only time I've had spoilage was when a jar failed to seal or didn't have enough vacuum to hold the seal because the liquid boiled out. That is quite obvious when you go to use the jar, if you didn't catch it sooner.
  8. Ridiculous. If there is a thermal loving bacteria in there then NO home canned food is safe to eat! Might as well toss all our canners and go buy canned food from the grocery. I don't believe that about the reverse vacuum either. You have a vent hole in the thing so it cannot have a vacuum in it. I don't have a food safety course under my belt. Only a degree in nursing which required Microbiology and 4 yrs towards a 5 yr degree in Mechanical Engineering. (I had to quit because I was too sick with cancer to continue. I was on the President's list.) I had to study Chemistry, Physics and Thermodynamics among other things.
  9. Absolutely do not toss them or reprocess! Take them out, wash them off, remove the rings and put them on the shelf. I frequently turn the canner off and fall in bed. They are fine left in the canner till morning.
  10. Get yourself a box fan and find one of those washable filters for it. Not the thin one, get the one about 1/2 inches thick with the metal frame around it. Put the filter against the back of the fan and turn it on in the room you are working. Be sure to have the arrows on the filter pointed in the right direction. If you stir stuff up, it doesn't hurt to take a break and leave the fan running a while to remove the dust too. Wash the filter outside with the hose or in the shower under hot water and let it dry before using again.
  11. Dad's family is from Alabama. I was born there. Left when I was 13. Dad passed when I was 20 and I lost touch with his family.
  12. I think the hardest part of having the docs tell you that you are dying is that you don't want to cause grief and pain to those you love. It makes it hard to talk about. People just don't want to hear it. You need to talk, whether you are the person with the diagnosis or the person who loves the one who is dying. If you cannot talk about it, you become very isolated with your grief. Wish I could do something to help you. I do have a shoulder and an ear if you need them. ((((((((ANNARCHY)))))
  13. I'm with Amber, never knew dog meat was kosher. Live and learn. Michael, those are not cats. They are elves in disguise or something. LOL
  14. When I pressure can beans they are usually older ones and I process for 90 min at 10#. Haven't had any rocks in a good while though. I get beans from the food salvage and they tend to be at least a yr old in original package. Too hard to cook the standard way but good canned.
  15. Not blooming likely, sweetie. Polite enough for ya? Next they'll be wanting us to register our livestock, down to the last chicken. Oh, wait, they already do. Well they'll have to come count the chickens. I've never been able to.
  16. Howdy! Pull up a chair and set a spell.
  17. Christy, I just hope I can manage it. It would be easier to make the changes if she were cooperative. She thinks I'm being mean. She isn't capable of understanding.
  18. I don't think she has an infection, yeast or parasite. She is never allowed outside barefooted and of course doesn't sit on the ground or play with dirt. She just isn't interested. With the raw goat milk that should have her covered on intestinal infection or yeast. No symptoms of any of those things. All meat is well cooked. I keep the animals parasite free too with the copper sulfate. She is improving with the diet change so I'll keep pursuing that unless something else comes up. She gets the Mega-Vita-Gel caps from Puritan's Pride, additional water soluble vit K and D as well as extra C. She takes them really well. I think I'll call the adoption agency and ask if they have heard from the bio parents about any genetic problems. I've kept them UTD on our address in case her bio family ever want to contact her.
  19. Most of the fat in her diet has been from the raw organic goat milk for quite some time. The rest is lard from our pastured pigs and a little fat from the poultry I raise organically. I sure hope she isn't having problems digesting the milk, but I'm watching her for symptoms. She doesn't talk and it is hard sometimes to figure out that she is having a problem unless she does something like dropping from 105# to 95# like she just did. More than adequate calorie intake and no increase in activity level or any other reason apparent for the weight loss. Definitely lots of undigested fat going thru her though.
  20. It has a good many fiddly parts, but really not that hard to clean. Lye soap and hot water and you're good to go. Mother, I'm really concerned about her not having fat, but we are going to try some coconut oil in small amounts starting in about a month and see if her intestine has healed enough to handle it. I'm giving her dried pineapple and papaya to help with the enzymes.
  21. Screwed that sucker down to the dresser and it went MUCH better today. I also made a spout for a slot that was letting milk drain down the side of the separator. Need to tweak that. There is a slot so that milk doesn't build up under the cone thingy and get into the mechanism, but I was getting too much milk out of it running the machine more than once and it is messy. Much better to have it go in a cup for the chicken bucket than all over the table and under the machine. Mixed cherry juice concentrate and sugar with the milk and daughter was happier with it.
  22. Thanks for the response, I was hoping to hear from you!
  23. It is a new separator, I think a design flaw on the valve. It is pretty cheaply made. If this works for daughter and she can drink the skim milk, I'll likely invest in a better machine. I found a bigger board to use and went thru the house till I found an old dresser that is solid enough not to wobble and is level. I need to order clamps. I live in a mobile home and it is pretty hard to find anyplace to put extra equipment. I already have two grinders, stand mixer, blender, meat chopper, etc, etc plus all the milking equipment, canning equipment, many cases of home canned food, long term storage food, and everything for cooking two entirely different diets from scratch. And I sew, quilt, spin and weave! I need a BIG house. LOL It would be nice if it was all air conditioned too, instead of just one room where we both hibernate all summer. I have no garage and the outbuildings all house livestock. Storage trailer is out of the question for doing any work. House or nothing. Still, grateful for what I have and don't want to sound like I'm complaining! Old dresser is in the big bathroom and no place else to put it, but I guess I can pull a trash bag over the separator when not in use to keep the germs off. All the milk contact parts get taken off and washed right away and stored in a big pot between uses. I'll see what I can fix for her that she will drink and not upset that sensitive gut of hers. I know she'll drink chocolate, but that is out until I am sure she is healed up and tolerating the milk.
  24. Anybody have any good tips? I just got this yesterday. So far I have discovered that my board isn't big enough, need a bigger one, the table wobbles and isn't level, I DO need those C clamps that the lumber yard was out of, bungee cords ain't a gonna do, the valve on the bowl doesn't seal completely and you better get that crank up to speed before you get too much milk leaking thru or it will be all over the table and floor. I ran daughter's milk thru 4 times to be sure I got the fat out. Probably overkill, but since this was my first time, I wasn't sure I was doing it right. Then she didn't approve of the skim milk, I've always given her whole milk and this goat milk is rich. So after slaving for hours on this (including the milking) I get the evil eye for insisting she drink it. Guess she'll adjust.
