  1. Hi hon, appreciate the prayers! Thankfully it wasn't me that was bit, but one of my dear does. I lost her, unfortunately, but shot the rattler.

  2. Saw your post on the 'fear' thread and wanted to send hugs your way. You've been in my prayers since I heard you got bit by a rattler. Hope all is well. Hugs & prayers!

  3. Saline nose drops will help and you can flush the eyes with it too. To one qt of boiled, then cooled, water, put 1 tsp salt and a pinch of baking soda. Keep it capped and pour what you need into a cup. This will not sting like water does. Cod liver oil (unflavored) is good to put in the eyes at bedtime after washing them. It does not sting. I use the pearls and prick one with a sterile needle then squeeze it directly into the eye (use it on myself too). Can you get vitamin C? Put some in a glass with water, sugar and a little baking soda and some flavoring. It will help cut the mucous and help their immune systems fight off the virus.
  4. I hope not! You had enough of that fear last year. I'm trying to keep the grass around the house green. That is about all I can do.
  5. O2 absorbers have iron fillings that rust and remove oxygen. Only good for one use. Moisture absorbers are silica gel and can be heated to drive off the moisture and reused.
  6. http://www.deltaadsorbents.com/?gclid=COu-_cedmbACFQF7hwodL3tD1Q Just one source. First one up on google to give you an idea of what we are talking about.
  7. You are expected to come see me if you move to Texas! Put your dry foods in canning jars. I use 1/2 gallons and qts mostly, depending on how much there is. You can get packets of drying gel to go in them. Houston is really, really humid. Dallas not so bad. Periodically put the jars into the freezer for several days. The insects are bad here and will sometimes lay eggs under the rim of lids and if someone didn't get the lid on tightly enough, they will get into the food. I also freeze everything at least once when I first put it into the jars in case there are eggs in it.
  8. We had enough rain over winter and spring to push the weeds high and thick. Now they are drying out. I think fire danger is going to be very very high this summer.
  9. Currently reading Spurgeon's sermons, vol 1. Started reading "One Second After" since I got it as a free download, but didn't get far. Typical doomer garbage, IMHO.
  10. Texas is still in drought, though we had some relief this winter and spring. They are predicting continued drought and the temps that are at least 10* above normal aren't helping. No rain last summer and the temps hit 114 with months of above 100, sucked all the moisture out. I watered as much as I could but it wasn't enough.
  11. You don't have to have a mortgage to have a homestead exemption on taxes.
  12. Welcome to Mrs S! Pull up a chair and set a spell. Might as well pour yourself a glass of sweet tea.
  13. Sounds like a memorial summer to me! Have fun!
  14. I have sprouted wheat. Do NOT use greywater! Use only clean water and you MUST rinse several times a day or it will sour and stink. Greywater has bacteria in it. You should only use water that you would drink for sprouting anything you intend to eat.
  15. Beans and corn bread. My mother grew up eating mostly beans and cornbread with greens. Pinole. Corn nuts.
  16. Even when expected, it is hard to lose someone close. You know you'll see her again and that makes it so much better.
  17. Kappydell, we must have had all of those books. Really took them to heart at the time.
  18. I'd like to have one of those, Michael. I knead all my bread by hand.
  19. Arby, those old trays were so much easier to get the cubes out of! I have 3 sewing machines and one is an old treadle. I have a spinning wheel and a loom. A cabinet incubator for hatching eggs that doubles as a dehydrator. A Swing-a-way can opener mounted on the wall in the kitchen. Various oil and kerosene lamps. I use a shovel, hoe and rake to garden, no tiller, but how many garden any more? A manual pasta machine for noodles. Various grain grinders, but who grinds wheat and makes bread? I even have about a ton of wheat! (Maybe a bit more! LOL) Cast iron skillets, several pressure canners, a 10 gallon pot for making cheese or huge quantities of stew to can. People don't even cook, much less can, freeze or dehydrate to have stuff for later. Yes, some folks think I have 2 heads. You can see it in their eyes.
  20. Yeah. A lot of folks seem to want to know why I need two heads.
  21. Thanks for letting us know. She is in our prayers.
