  1. hmmm and how wide is the strips? This would be so cool.
  2. kitchen scrubbies? I've made them with the netting but I never would have thought of using plastic bags to make them.. seems like they'd feel too smooth to be scrubbie though?
  3. the cross will only happen in the next generation.. save seeds and those will be the cross.. tomatoes actually have a low instance of cross pollination.. something like only 5%. But others are more readily crossed. If you want to save seed there's ways to do it (covering the blossoms and pollinating them by hand and marking them as the ones to save for seed) so that you don't have to protect the whole garden just a couple of blossoms from each type of plant.
  4. This is not exactly what was being looked for but it can be sorta tweaked to figure it out. http://www.cheapcooking.com/costperserving.htm I know it does cost per serving but once you input information.. it also tells you how many servings you get per pound. So for instance.. if you figured boneless skinless chicken breasts and whole chicken.. you could figure out the difference in servings per pound and probably work out what you want to know. Not to mention it's awful handy for it's intended purpose.. helps you figure the better deals when buying it anyway.
  5. Oh but it's a dry heat... sorta like being stuck in one of those food dehydrators or when the wind is blowing, a hair dryer.. I was wondering about putting something that would spread and drape along the edges so that it would cover the bricks? rosemary comes to mind.
  6. for braiding or crocheting heavier lengths you can just hold the handles and pull the bag straight and poke a hole through the sides loop the next one through to create a chain of bags to work with. Same idea as splitting but just creating a hole to work with. I've heard of making them into a rug for stepping out of a shower. And would certainly be nice for camping or such where you might want a place to stand on that's not dirt.
  7. You might also want to consider what critters might like to hide from the heat in your garden if you let it become a wild tangle. And as far as spacing.. square foot gardening or intensive gardening will give you closer spacing than traditional methods (on the seed packets) and companion planting can help with the different "feeders".
  8. raised beds will likely make the soil warm faster and you'll lose more water in that heat down there. I would plant taller plants like Tomatoes and let them sprout and then get some ground cover type plants going.. they'll help keep things cooler and slow down evaporation.
  9. She really is a cutie.. and looks like a good mix of breeds.
  10. I like the name Sasha.. but Phiddler would be a close second.. might even win out. I like dog names that I can hollar outside without the neighbors thinking it's a child I'm yelling for.
  11. Our Safeway.. don't know about all safeways.. sometimes does a $10 off $50 coupons.. if you watch your spending and keep it close to that $50 mark.. that's 20% off your regular prices.. I bought hamburger this week with that coupon.. price of $2.99/lb then take off for the coupon and end up with about $2.40/lb. Sure it's even better if you can get stuff on sale with the coupon but at least it helps bring prices closer to reasonable.
  12. I saw this the other day and thought it was interesting to see. The image below is an illustration of what the Alamo garrison looked like in 1836.
  13. I had some at a friend's some time ago.. you ate them like nuts. I think she just barely sprouted them and then dried them out. I'd have to hunt around to find an actual recipe that looks right.
  14. that's what headcheese is.. it's the meat in the natural gelatin from boiling the meat with the bones.

    DIY Rain Barrels?

Don't forget your washing machine.. even if you just use the rinse water you can get a good bit of water that way. And keeping the dishpans in the sink means anytime someone runs water, you're saving it to go on your plants.
  16. You can use a good oil as a binder for meat salads too.
  17. Oh it's been a long time since I've been around any salami/summer sausage making and as I recall it was all raw meat that was cook in a very slow oven. BUT there is "head cheese" that is made from cooked meat (pork). So maybe that would give you some ideas or a different way to search?
  18. If you have a good anti-virus software program you should be able to scan any web site before actually logging into it, if you have any doubts. I'm not a pc guru, but I know my AVG allows me to do this. It's the anti-virus program that says there's a trojan horse.
  19. I didn't know you were here DawnPenguin.
  20. I have no idea what a bream is.. but the usda 2009 gives directions for fatty fish other than tuna, tuna, smoked fish, oysters, clams and crab - blue crabs are not recommended because of quality not safety. I don't know if there's more recent info that refutes this http://nchfp.uga.edu/publications/usda/GUIDE%205%20Home%20Can.pdf
  21. Boys are such fun little critters. We've had many conversations over the years about how pork is pig and beef is cow and each boy especially (but the girls too) apparently need to call it by the animal name rather than the meat name.. "oh boy we're having cow for dinner"
  22. Some cuts of meat were more popular in different parts of the country and different times (I've wondered why cuts I grew up aren't seen and that seems to be the main reason). It was beef that you'd get a rump roast.. Butt roasts are pork and I think they've been called that for ages.
  23. Philbe we use that toothpaste trick especially with bee stings. It works so well my dh even carries it in his line gear as a firefighter (wildland). And if you're going to go to the trouble of carrying aloe for sunburn.. do yourself a favor and carry sunscreen and maybe put hats and long sleeves in your gear too.. You do get used to wearing more clothes even when it's hot AND preventing burning with layers of clothes will feel cooler than letting yourself cook in a tank top.
