  1. Starting The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes. I got through New Deal, Raw Deal faster than I thought I would. The chapters went quickly and kept my interest. DH had bought a hardback, printed in USA, copy of Little Women as a Christmas gift for me (my copy is old and falling apart). We ended up returning it. There was an Introduction. To me, it seemed like the person who wrote the intro had an agenda. I didn't even finish reading the intro. Seemed like someone enjoyed the book as a youngster, became a feminist and then hated everything about the book. It was even suggested that the main character, Jo, and the author, Louisa May Alcott, were homosexual. I read Little Women for the 1st time when I was around 11. I don't think a book especially written for young girls needs a intro like that one.
  2. Candles are cheap right now (if there are any left). I usually stock up. I know in years past, Walmart had plain vanilla candles of all sizes that were with the Christmas stuff. They'd get discounted. Since it wasn't pine scented (green ones) or whatever scent the red ones were, you couldn't tell that they were "Christmas" candles. Plus, I like to stick with all vanilla candles when the power is out (instead of mixing various scents). It's also the faintest of the scented ones.
  3. There's chocolate candy in Christmas packaging, like Hershey's kisses that could be used later in baking (peanut butter blossom cookies). Same with the red and green colored M&Ms (sorting the color or saving for next year's Christmas cookies) for M&M cookies (same recipe at chocolate chip cookies, but with the candy instead of the chips).
  4. Don't forget 4WD or 2WD--on ice, you're going to slide. DH's work vehicle (employer owns it) is a newer Chevy Tahoe. Instead of being a true 4WD, it's called "all wheel drive" or something like that. DH hates it as the 4 WD part only kicks in when the vehicle recognizes it's slipping/not getting enough traction.
  5. Mt Rider, I'm glad your DH is safe!! all goes well with getting your car repaired! I hope everyone else in the storm's path stays safe!! We didn't get hit with much more snow after DH got home yesterday. Plow/salt trucks hadn't touched most of the roads he drove on.
  6. We use microfilm in several libraries in our area to do genealogy research. Most (but not all) of those libraries have obituary indexes (a list of names with the name of the newspaper and date). Usually, DH sits down at the reader with a list and the rolls of microfilm I need. I do other research while he's doing that. (If I start going through the old newspapers looking for the obits, I get VERY easily distracted by articles!)
  7. Watched the noon news. Many accidents. Plow trucks haven't really been out. (Booo PennDot!) People are advised to stay home if they can. Apparently a few of the wrecks were people trying to get to stores to return/exchange Christmas gifts. The problem is the layer of ice under the several inches of snow. Some areas are getting straight snow now, others the sleet and freezing rain, on top of the layer of snow. It's messy out there. DH left work early and is making his way home. (I told him to call off )
  8. Santa brought books. I read The Snow Angel by Glenn Beck yesterday. Now I've started New Deal or Raw Deal? How FDR's Economic Legacy Has Damaged America by Burton Folsom, Jr.
  9. I'm sorry for your loss. Praying for you and your family.
  10. They are calling for my area to get 6-10 inches of snow today. Depending on where the warm air is, it will change into frain/sleet/snow mix. I hope that part holds off until DH is safely home from work today. When we went to bed last night, they were forcasting for this to hit us at 4 am. So, far, nothing, but the wind is picking up. 11am--little ice balls came and coated the roads. The snow started. It's big flakes. Almost looks like large cottonballs coming down. It's coming down FAST.
  11. Jeepers, I hope today is going better than yesterday! I have squirrels in my house, but we keep 'em in the freezer.
  12. Was at Sam's Club today. They had the 3-packs of Libby's canned pumpkin priced at $3.61! These are the larger size cans. They're not close to the best by date, either. Guess people didn't buy as much at Thanksgiving. Anyway, DH likes to make the Pumpkin Leather in the dehydrator, so this was a very good deal for us. I don't know if every Sam's has that price, but if you're in one, it might be worth looking at.
  13. Thanks for starting this thread and posting the link, Cat!!
  14. Well, the fact that he still has ears is a good sign you must be doing a pretty good job! The first few times I cut his hair, well, I'm glad he wears a ball hat most of the time! I only get my hair cut once a year, so we figure it's just better (safer for the marriage?) to have it cut at the hair-cutting place. Mine is such a simple cut that last time, they charged me the child haircut rate.
  15. I have sympathy for the victims and their families. I'm praying for them. I can't even imagine what they are going through... That said, I haven't watched much of the news coverage. Not because it is upsetting, but because of how this tragedy is going to be used as a political tool, if it's not already. Every freedom-grabbing, crap on the Constitution, attempt to restrict our rights and disarm us type of bill will be for "the safety of the children". Gunplumber is absolutely right. The mention that the bad guy might be an Aspie or have any form of autism? More restrictions on who can legally purchase guns. In the past, I've heard of antis wanting to require everyone to have a "mental health eval" before being able to purchase. This is a scary road to go down.
  16. Thanks for posting the pics, Luma! All the ornaments look great!! You all are very creative ladies!
