  1. We've found prep items at yard sales, too. I also like to look for used books at yard sales. Most books are $1 or less. If an older person is having a yard sale or if it's an estate sale, we usually find more things. Some of the newer housing developments seem to have yard sales that are just baby, kids and holiday items.
  2. I think Giant Eagle grocery stores are only in PA, OH and WV....but for anyone near one, they are having a sale on Libby's canned vegetables. It's 50 cents/can! I did have to go to 2 stores because the 1st one was out. I did get a rain check at the first store. They'll only give you a raincheck for 20 cans. At the second store, the shelves and endcaps were pretty much empty. A stock clerk was bringing out more. He was very nice and went pack and dug through the pallet they had just gotten in to find ones that were the Naturals for me (no added salt & sugar). While they didn't have all the varieties, I was able to get corn, green beans and french style green beans. There's not a limit. The manager said because there's not a limit people are buying them up quickly and just since yesterday have gone through over 200 cases. Around last Thanksgiving or Christmas, 50 cents per can was the sale price I got canned veggies for. In case they are higher this year for those sales, I stocked up now. Some will be going to the church food pantry, too.
  3. Anyone else having Indian Summer right now? It's been really nice, temps in the upper 60s/lower 70s. That weather is expected to continue all week. It sure doesn't feel like late October here! Apparently the massive acorn crop wasn't enough to satisfy the chipmunk....he got our 2nd planting of beets, too!
  4. On Saturday, I got our Thanksgiving turkey ordered. We order our turkey fresh from a local turkey farm. The price went up 20 cents/pound from last year. I assume that's their rising feed costs. Luma, congratulations on taking the course!! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Don't worry about the naysayers. I've dealt with that, too, from family. My carry handgun was purchased the day after we were notified by our local police dept. that a sexually violent predator was being released from state prison and moving to my neighborhood. [i was familiar with guns before that and even had my LTCF. We just didn't have the extra money for a handgun for me, but we ended up putting it on a credit card.] Even using that as an example of why I was carrying (and suggesting we move the neighborhood rapist out of my neighborhood and into theirs), I still got crap from a certain family member.
  5. I'm sitting here reading through this thread and when I got to Philbe's mentioning of Thanksgiving it just hit me---I haven't placed the order for our Thanksgiving turkey yet! I don't know how I managed to forget about that one...although it doesn't seem like it's halfway through October already, either.
  6. Happy Birthday, Pixie! Happy Birthday, Poohbear!
  7. I couldn't put Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place down. I started reading it late Friday afternoon and ended up staying up until after midnight to finish it. Now I'm reading Dressed to Kill by Rick Renner. The cover says it's "A Biblical Approach to Spiritual Warfare and Armor".
  8. We turned it on today. It was 30 degrees outside when we got up this morning. We just needed to take the chill out of the house! We're making meatloaf tonight (first time this fall for using the oven, too), so that'll help to warm it up in here. We haven't lit the pellet stove yet.
  9. Today I started reading The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom.
  10. Our yard is "crunchy" with acorns, too. At least the chipmunks are focused on the acorns for now and leaving the 2nd planting of beets alone!
  11. I'm dehydrating the last of the green peppers from our garden.
  12. My area has a frost advisory for tonight/tomorrow morning. DH and I picked all of the green peppers. Most were small, but we got a big mixing bowl full. I'm going to work on getting them dehydrated tomorrow. In other cool weather stuff, I wanted to get a couple new (extra) blankets for our bed. I was going to buy Vellux ones, but they are made in China now. I was disappointed, but DH says I shouldn't be surprised. Seems like everyone's blankets are. We did find USA made ones cheap at Walmart. With my skin still in ultra, ultra sensitive mode, I was trying to find things not treated with so many chemicals/pesticides. I'm reacting to even handling clothes in the store. I bought jeans last weekend. I soaked them in a bucket with a couple cups of vinegar. When I drained the bucket, the water was a yellow-green color. No wonder going through the clothes rack at the store was turning my hands red! Next on my prep list for winter is thermal blackout curtains for the living room. The store was out of the size and color I want. Will have to check next week. We already have them in our bedroom and another room. I think they pay themselves off in a winter. Plus, it cuts down on the noise level from the neighbors!
