  1. I now have WeatherBug on my computer due to doing that. As much as I hate the amount of space that the program takes up on my computer, it could have been much worse and could have been a "REAL" virus. It is darn near impossible to delete, too. I deleted it but it still is on my desktop...
  2. Happy Thursday! It is 79 degrees outside and absolutely GORGEOUS! Of course, I am in the house writing. I have plans to go outside to play after hubby gets off of work. He will probably be too loud for me to be able to write then, anyway! Happy birthday to Josh! Living in the city, I'd love to hear some bellowing cows. Instead, I hear my (LOUD TALKING) neighbors through the open window! Have a great day, everyone!
  3. Will you please stop wrestling with farm animals, struggling with fencing and trying to stockpile more stuff so that you can enjoy the day?!?! One day spent with your feet kicked up won't kill you! Here's hoping that you have a wonderful birthday celebration planned and that you spend the day doing exactly as you wish...except for the wrestlng, struggling and stockpiling stuff! Mmmmm...birthday cake is the best!
  4. I think that you'll be okay, but both crops are root crops. I believe that the two types of crops take different types of nutrients from the soil since they have different coloration. The colors of vegetables indicate the nutrients that they require from the soil, somewhat. However, I would be sure to add some new sources of nutrients to the soil in the form of a little compost or something to make sure. Edited to add: Don't add too much compost since too much nitrogen can cause the plants to put all of their effort into making leaves instead of root crops.
  5. Yesterday was dreary here, too! Today we have a little sunshine, so I'm feeling pretty good. I started my day with a little decluttering and am just now sitting down to some breakfast. Hubby and I have the house to ourselves for the next week as our youngest daughter is traveling to North Dakota to visit a friend from school. I'm a bit nervous about her trip because she has never been further away than Connecticut without us. I have plans to spend the day writing, but I will have to do the poultry chores first. Have a great day, everyone!
  6. Thay can't help it... It's in their DNA, I think! My hubby bangs things on the counter, too...
  7. Whew! I almost missed out on getting some cake ... and celebrating your special day with you!
  8. Most of what is out there is either about me or about someone called themartiangirl. There is quite a bit of information out there about me under my screen name and under my real name. However, I don't think that there is much out there that could be damaging.
  9. So the website is called EarthEasy.... Clearly the prices aren't WALLETEASY!! I do like the idea of the garden space on top. That is something that I could do with my quail cage. I already set lots of flower pots with herbs and lettuce up there. To have an actual raised bed would really increase the yield.
  10. It is so nice to have you here, Pamela! I have a cousin that is also an RN. She now works for an insurance company and does it from home. I believe that she told me that she spends her time looking over medical files. She has a couple of health issues and this works out very well for her.
  11. I've never seen that but it is beautifully written, Cat.
  12. I watched all of the SYFY offerings yesterday, while I did some major decluttering. I had seen them all previously with the exception of Space Twisters. That kind of stuff keeps me motivated when cleaning. I think it is because the towns in the movies get wrecked and I want my house to NOT look like a pile of rubble! I got a lot of stuff done yesterday... We ran errands in the morning: the feed store, the pet store, the bank , Ollie's Bargain Outlet and the grocery store to grab a big bottle of cooking oil for the pantry. Then I spent time in the barn taking care of the birds and cleaning out cages and pens. I ran a few cleaning cycles in the dishwasher (Thanks to tips found on Pinterest!) Then washed a boatload of dishes in said dishwasher. I worked on dinner in between everything and spent several hours moving things around in my laundry room, pantry and junk room ...er I mean my craft room! I even had time to write a bit during the Alien Tornado movie. By the time that Space Twisters started, I was folding clothes. I didn't want to miss anything!
  13. Thanks, Cat! I hadn't thought about that, but then I'm out there anyway! One of these days the men in black driving black SUV's are gonna pull up in front of my house. Using a bullhorn they'll say,"You! Inside the house we're commandeering your hoarded supply of toilet paper!" I'll be ready to cry then because y'all know how much I my toilet paper stash! All jokes aside, you are absolutely right, Cat! We should be more careful about stuff like that...
  14. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it but they do absorb some of what you say. Sometimes, it is hard for a younger person to imagine bad times if they've never had them. We have three daughters and a son. The son lives life for today with little thought toward tomorrow. The oldest daughter has 5 children and is trying to prep, but it is difficult with 5 kids and one household income. The middle daughter gets it. She isn't the best in an emergency situation because she panics a bit, but she is quite frugal and does stock up at every opportunity. The youngest daughter, well she leaves evry light on and has never met a shopping mall that she didn't like! However, she is fantastic in an emergency. She thinks through the event and listens so that she can follow my every instruction. They all know that we've got their backs in an emergency, though they don't all get our lifestyle!
  15. I think that most of the strawberries get separated from the tomato because they are attached by that flimsy thread. I did have one in my sewing box as a kid, but it is probably still in my parents' house. As a Girl Scout, we also made pincushions out of a canning ring and scrap velvet. I think we just stuffed them with poly fill and covered the bottom with a piece of cardboard that was glued into place. I'll bet that my mom still has that one, too!
  16. I've read Deep Winter and absolutely loved it. Good storyline that spells out the value of being prepared.
  17. I miss her wit and hope that things go well and that she is back in the coffee clatch asap!
  18. My daughter uses Rosetta Stone, but she's 22. I'm not sure how it would be for younger kids. What language are you interested in? She used to belong to a website called YesJapan.com, which taught her Japanese. That site is geared towards kids and makes learning fun with mock game shows and contrived situations to allow them to practice using the language. There might be a similar site for other languages.
  19. Ohhh... I'm so jealous! I can't wait until I can hold something little and fuzzy that wasn't scraped out of the refrigerator!
  20. Very cute apron, Miki! I especially like the choice of t-shirt. I will keep the idea in mind in case I ever need to make one. (Of course, I already have a mighty fine apron that was made by Violet from the Mrs. Survival forums....) The writing is coming along. I spent the morning doing a number of outdoor chores so this afternoon will be spent writing.
  21. Thank you all so much! I have been hard at work for the past few days. I'm really trying to get the sequel buttoned up. As much as I am enjoying these characters, I have some more in my head that are screaming to get out!! Looking back, it is funny how scary all of this once seemed. You all have been so encouraging... This really is the nicest place to hang out on the net and I plan to figure out how I can spend more time here amongst all of you! Okay...enough of the waterworks and sentimentality! I'll get back to work, now!
  22. Just rachet up the pressure, why dontcha? I've been hard at work despite a slight setback this week. Tomorrow will be devoted to more writing if I can just lock hubby out of my office...
