  6. Ok with y'all if I take over this thread with links to free books? I'm on my iPad, so if I try to put more than one in a post, it loses what I've done before. For the same reason, I may not have the full title or the exact title, but I can get close! $10 Root Cellar: http://www.amazon.com/10-Root-Cellar-Vegetables-Simplicity-ebook/dp/B00E6EGS0M/ref=pd_sim_kstore_35

Edited because apparently Fannie Farmer is no longer in there.
  9. Those of us who got it can loan it to one person for 2 weeks. We just have to have the email address connected to your Kindle account. If you have a book and want to loan it, go to the book's page on Amazon. Up in the yellow banner that says you already bought the book, you should have a link to loan it if the option is available for that book. I think Canned Nerd and Annarchy should have first dibs. Either of you want to borrow it? I won't have time to go through it for a bit.
  10. You can read them on your computer using the Kindle program as well - scroll down on this page to find the computer versions: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_sn_kin?nodeId=200127470
  11. So....is it too late to start making vanilla extract as gifts for this Christmas?
  12. Traveling Bone Broth How long do you think this stuff would last? And are our resident food safety experts twitching?
  13. Mom put together the shopping list on Monday. It included a potatoes. So I picked up a 10-pound bag. When I helped carry groceries out to the camper, I pointed at the bag by the door and asked if we'd end up using all of them. She said no, take some home. Got out to the camper and realized...I hadn't brought the potatoes in from the car yet. So now I have a FULL 10-pound bag of potatoes and probably more next week once we get back. Dinner tonight? Diced potatoes fried in lard, seasoned with garlic, an all-purpose blend, and smoked salt. Nomnomnom. Hubby told me thanks for making enough for him too, as we normally cook our food single. Wait, what? That was going to be my dinner TOMORROW night!
  14. Google "Dirty Dozen" Produce - those are the produce items that are the worst in terms of pesticides and such. Buy those organic, or skip them. The companion list is the "Clean Fifteen" - the ones that aren't too bad even if they aren't organic. Mix your ground beef half and half with beans once it's cooked. I use lentils. Plan around cheaper foods. Rice and potatoes are cheap and filling. Plan your meals ahead of time. The chicken you have roasted today turns into tomorrow's chicken sandwiches and the next day's chicken soup. Or Chicken Snot. Figure out if it is cheaper to make your staples or to buy them. Google will find you plenty of recipes. LOL - How did I ever miss the recipe for CHICKEN SNOT?!?!? Thanks for taking me back to that thread. It was nice to visit with Westie and some of the other members who are no longer visiting. It's actually earlier in this thread. Re-read the whole thing, it's FUN!

  16. As far as I can tell, this is a real obituary. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sunherald/obituary.aspx?n=harry-stamps&pid=163538353&fhid=4025#fbLoggedOut He sounds like he was a hoot and had a hoot, and his family is still having a hoot. RIP.
  17. Even if you don't think you're allergic to mold, I'm not sure I would test it out. I only react to certain types of mold. The black mold growing on the window in my dorm room gave me migraines. I've never reacted to any other sort of mold like that. Other mold makes me sneeze. Other just makes me tired.
  18. I, personally, would love a copy...but I'm also a recipe fiend and cookbook collector.
  19. Creamed chicken! Cook a chicken in the crockpot with onions and garlic, saving & straining the broth. Shred the chicken and heat up the broth in a pot on the stove. Dump the chicken in it, then let it all heat until bubbly. Add your starch mixed with water and let it bubble for a few minutes. Decide if you want it thicker, and if you do, add more starch in water. If you don't, ladle it over mashed potatoes and dig in. Note: We use arrowroot starch. It doesn't make the broth more opaque as some other starches do. This dish has been dubbed "chicken snot" in our house.
  20. The onions kept going for 3 or 4 weeks before they started getting slimy and pale. I gave up at that point.
  21. I've grabbed a frozen container of chili to take to work, then realized at lunch that I had a nice container of spaghetti sauce.

  23. We figured out a meal plan using entirely meat and stuff we already have for 2 weeks. We're now going into week 2. How long does it take for a turkey to thaw out?
  24. Violet, I discovered they leak when I tried to shake them to mix a powder into water. If they only work if I leave them upright in my fridge, they do not work for pretty much anything I would want to use them for other than capping jelly.
