  1. Snowmom: Yikes! It sounds difficult to move the fair date up when produce won't be ready just for the carnival. I hope all works out. I wonder what would have happened if they just didn't have the carnival part? I think our fair is the end of July. I missed it during my working years but this year I intend to enjoy it.
  2. Late good morning: Most of yesterday was a family funeral, visiting with family afterwards and then friends after that. We didn't get home until almost 5. This morning so far we've just been watching President Reagan's funeral. Lois: Do you get bear visitors often? Across the river in Ilwaco, Washington they have a problem and people have to take in their bird feeders at times.Yikes! Brigid: I forgot about you being out working in this rain. Hope today cleared up where you are also. Mamafitz: Hope you get over that migraine and/or discover what caused it. Snowmom: oh, rats! I forgot what you said. Well, I'll have to go back and look. Wish we could see all of the posts.
  3. We're having a lot of dirty laundry with working outside. When DH gets back from golf we are off to look at gravel for the new path and then I expect we'll buy some. Wouldn't ya know it's pouring down rain. But we are looking forward to getting this project done. I've been wearing my hair short and it grows fast. Last time I went about 6 weeks and it was looking shaggy. Thing is I really don't need the expense. When you go to a hairdresser for years and get to know them it's hard to quit! Not only that I don't look good in longer hair anymore. All that to say, the day is coming when I need to go to plan B. Let is grow anyway, get it cut less often and look shaggy in between or who knows? I used to cut it myself. Thing is I can't do the back. I asked DH to cut the back straight across once and when he did and then said "Wait a minute, let me even this up" I said "That's enough" because I could see the back of my head bald while he tried to get it even . What do you all do? I made sour dough pancakes this morning. They were so good. It was the first of my new sourdough batch. Lois: That was very interesting about the honey. We have a co-op that tries to buy most things organic and locally so I'm going to check there about honey. Our Sunday Market has honey but I believe the sellers are from about 50 miles from here. I am very interested in using the honey to combat allergies and DH's excema. Thyra: I'll bet you'll miss your family. Sometimes it's good to get back to routine, too. Mommafitz: Good job for your son. Snow: I'm not hanging my laundry out today. Not a chance. Goatherder: Last day of school always brings back a fond memory. I'm sure it's every bit as happy for teachers as students. Good for you for holding the student to the dress code. Diinmi: It's only 57 here (11 AM). Wish I could send some coolness over your way.
  4. I'm getting my hair cut this morning. DH's uncle passed away yesterday so I want to get some food together to take to the family. The funeral is Thursday. I was going to lead a Bible study on Thursday but will have to call to let them know I can't do it this time. Uncle Johnny was the last of our parent's generation in DH's father's side of the family. Thankfully DH visited him while he was sick and was told many family stories he didn't know about. Mommafitz: That's quite a distance from town. You must be all honed up on planning well. Snowmom: Sounds like a busy day for you, too. Hope those allergies get under control for Old Pine.
  5. I just got home from church. Three young people were confirmed today. I hadn't been to a confirmation since mine about 43 years ago. It's very wet out today. Not raining at this very second but that could change fast. Lots of rain moving through. So, it's an "inside day". We're having leftover pizza for lunch. It's going to be a lazy day.
  6. The morning started out with rain and we expect more but right now the sun is out . Unfortunately it wasn't out while DH was hauling stuff to the free dump today. DH drilled holes in the half whiskey barrels so now they are ready to plant. I was just thinking it's two weeks before I have company so I had better plan out finishing getting ready. One thing I want to do for sure is pre-make some meal preparations. I find it hard to go on an outing and then come home and have dinner together. Last time we ended up going to a restaraunt but this time that's not an option and I do like cooking. Snowmom: Thanks for keeping us updated on Fran. Hope DH is feeling better. What is a Z-pack or do I want to know?
  7. Hello everyone, We are in for good weather again. The plan today is for DS and DIL to come over to help load up the sod removed into the back of the pickup because tomorrow is free dump day. They take most yard debris free but not sod so the free day is a good thing. I'm thinking of getting everyone to go to the lavender farm today. We don't get many days when everyone is off. They some other things as well as lavender. I've gotten stevia there before and hope to find some plants. I'm looking forward to this!
  8. I love this type of vacation. You can come home to your own bed and the cats won't get lonesome. Even when we lived in Portland there were plenty of interesting things to do. For example a local nursery had an apple tasting where they had many varieties of apple slices to taste. You could buy some if you wanted but it was also so you could taste the differences. They also had a dixieland band. Or we'd go to the Greek Festival in September - lots of music, folk dancing and you could buy little samples of wonderful food or a whole meal. The highland games are in July at one of the community colleges. It does cost to get in and there are a lot of people but we discovered you could pre-buy your tickets and forego the long line. Then it was great fun to watch the bagpiping competitions, dancing, games. My favorite was the bagpipe band competitions. Then lots and lots of booths. Anyway, I would just watch the paper to discover some of these things. In a smaller city it is easier to know when things are happening. We have a great crab feed at the Warrenton Community Hall which is very reasonable in February or March. You just pay for your meal, sit down at one of the tables covered with newspapers and they bring you your dungeness crab with coleslaw, garlic toast and even dessert, there's the Scandinavian Festival in June (18,19,20) with the crowning of the queen (Miss Denmark, Miss Norway, Miss Finland or Miss Sweden), then an Op Tog (walking parade of people in their Scandinavian costumes through downtown - you'd think you had landed in another country!), then out at our 4-H grounds there are groups dancing, absolutely wonderful Scandinavian food, booths, music, story tellers, etc. Then there is the 4-H Fair, the Regatta Parade and festival, and on and on. Someone here puts on country dances at one of the granges that I think are free. You learn to dance the pattern dances and can bring kids to participate. Also Fourth of July fireworks down at the waterfront. Then you can hike up Saddle Mountain, Neakanie Mountain, walk on the beaches, lots of parks.
  9. You've got it pretty much together, Snowmom. We need people now. Here I am showing up. Happy Birthday, Caveman!
  10. Good morning everyone, Another nice day expected here. The sun is out and the sky is blue. DH is going to rent a sod remover this morning and we will be preparing the area where the raised beds will go plus a place where we will make a gravel path from the patio to the shed. Bil didn't show up yesterday and that is good. DH and I are together on the situation and he will take it in hand if he does show up (long story and not a positive person to have in our lives). Theyd: Know that feeling about no paycheck. Not really a feeling - a pinch! Glad you can stay home with DH. Snowmom: I'll bet the folks in the nursing home really enjoy your visit. Mamafitz: Good to hear from you! It sounds like you are really busy. Your son is blessed to have the scholarships and that he isn't living on campus. Lois: Hope those plants perk up today. My rosemary, lavender and thyme are going great guns. I need to move some pineapple sage that has grown too big for the spot I planted them in. Wherever I put them I want to be able to walk by and brush them for that wonderful fragrance.
  11. Good morning . I'll need to make a trip to the grocery store. Used the last of the coffee this morning. Snowmom: I'm with you - there are tons of things to do. So glad to hear about Fran's progress. Ginger: Hope your day goes well.
  12. Westie: That sounds like a fun project. How many scarecrows are usually entered? I love our 4-H Fair but wasn't able to go the last two years. I'm looking forward to this year.
  13. Ginger: Do you have a health food store? That's a possibility.
  14. Preparing for building raised bed gardens. Free dump this weekend so we want to remove the sod and also some sod to make a nicer landscape line in the front yard. I am also working at decluttering so I can relax and get into some projects. I have some pillowcases to embroider and don't even know where they are at! Also I have some old flour sack material and some printed kitten appliques for dish towels. Okay, Lowie, what are you doing?
  15. I have a lot of directions I could go in today but that won't work so I'll have to figure them out one by one. One thing is laundry - I started a load last night and need to finish up. Also think I can change the bedding and get them on the safely without rain. Also I've started some sour dough so I have to "feed" it a couple of times today before it can be used/go in the refrigerator. Cat: What a frustrating day for you! Snowmom: Good to see you back.
  16. Snowmom, Thanks for the update.
  17. My Dad didn't serve in WWII because of ashtma so he was responsible for helping support his mother until the war was over. His oldest brother worked in a shipyard and his youngest brother served in WWII. I have a cousin who served in Viet Nam and has a partial disability because of it. Another cousin served in Desert Storm and is now retired from the army I believe. I am proud of them all.
  18. Yes, this is an interesting turn about. When I started seeing a Naturopathic Doctor about seven years ago one of the first things he did was have me alternating the oils - first CLA, then salmon oil capsules, etc. Interesting about the borage. When I bought a plant at the Sunday Market they told me it was a good companion to tomatoes and would draw lots of bees (I assumed this meant they would polinate the tomatoe plants). Can hardly wait to see those flowers.
  19. I would have thought the blackberries would have acted in the opposite way (the trots). We planted lettuces (from seed) that were tiny and now they are gone! Someone discovered them. The tomatoes have the flowers coming and cucumbers are growing well. We hope to get out new raised beds going within the next week. It's cool here (53 this morning) so this is a reasonable time to plant. But next year we will be ready with the beds already made.
  20. Wow, Momo, that's early. Our blackberries aren't ripe until late August.
  21. I guess I should have added "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" and then we can all have that stuck in our heads today
  22. The rain continues here. We may have a reprieve tomorrow. I hope. Last night was a good time with the family. I forgot how long it takes to bake country style pork ribs so everyone was good and hungry. I enjoy being with my kids and the nice, young men they have grown up to be. Well, they were nice little kids, too. We're off to church soon. Have a great day everyone.
  23. My husband's oldest brother called their cousin a month or so ago stating his intention of moving back to this area. He "wants to put his feet in the Pacific Ocean again". He did not call DH because he has been mad at him for years. He doesn't like our lifestyle so he chose not to let us know where he lives or how to contact him. This brother has a history of moving in with people and sponging off them. He lived with us (along with his now ex-wife) years ago until they royally wore out their welcome. He was working but they did not volunteer to compensate for meals or help out with groceries. They sat around and criticized how we did things (our oldest son was an infant and they didn't think we should pick him up when he cried, she didn't think I should make DH's breakfast ... on and on). He lived with the cousin he called for some months until she finally had to ask him to leave. Now this cousin's father is terminally ill and she works full time. SO DH called the brother and he said he needs an apartment for $300/mo. DH found a possibility but the brother calls back a month later and he did nothing about contacting the landlord and lost out. So now he calls and want to have 25 boxes of things stored at our house. DH had to tell him we do not have room and gave him the number of a storage unit. The bottom line is I don't want this guy staying here. He makes a rather impetuous decision to move here expecting others to pitch in on making his arrangements which he doesn't follow through on. It sounds like more "moochville" to me. This guy is just bitter and opinionated and I feel like you don't just show up and expect everyone to bail you out of a stupid decision. I'm wondering if he's burned his bridges where he's at. His daughter lives in Colorado. GUess I just needed to vent. It's a hard place to be and I'm afraid when he shows up DH will feel guilty somehow and the guy will end up here. Then my home will definitely not be a
