  1. Probably pear, and apple. Maybe peach. I am going to have to see what will survive here. It maybe a pipe dream but well I really would like to have a couple of producing fruit trees.
  2. I have tried container gardening here but it just is not working. We have only been in this house for about 3 years and our focus at first was getting it livable. It was a HUD foreclosure so it needed some TLC and lots of elbow grease. This summer we got the chicken coop in and now have 8 chickens. We are getting about 6 eggs a day. Hopefully the other two will start laying soon. This fall I will start working on raised beds in the backyard. I am going for U-shaped beds. and hope to get 3 or 4 put in. I also hope to squeeze in a green house. We have such a short growing season that I really can't plant anything til late May without working about snow and freezing weather. This spring I hope to be able to afford fruit shrubs like blueberries, blackberries and plums. I have a couple of trees that need to come down and I want to replace them with dwarf fruit trees. I have my garden notebook printed off and put together. I did that last week. Now I just need to start planning on what I want to grow. Wish we were further south so that we had a longer growing season. It is already starting to cool off here and I am no where near ready to plant cool weather crops.
  3. Hubby has been out of work for over a year now. We were doing ok until I had to take a cut in pay three months ago. Now we REALLYYYYYYY need for him to find a job. He has applied for a couple of jobs here at the prison, not as a guard but other positions out there. I am asking for prayer for him to get one. I would like for him to have the one in maintenance since it pays more, but we would take the mail room and not complain. Things are beyond tight right now, pennies are running when they see me come. Not only would the financial burden be relieved but it has benefits. Something my job does not have.
  4. Finally finished the pears. Have about a dozen peaches left but I couldn't bring myself to can them. I mean I need something to snack on right? Now on to the next project....what can I get into now
  5. Peaches are done! Now on to the pears. They are not as easy to deal with as the peaches - dunk the peaches in hot water then ice water and the skin comes right off. Pears have to peel. But that is ok they look so purrrrddeeeee
  6. Well last night we didn't get to can. Had to re-plumb the master bathroom sink. But tonight we have 6 quarts in the canner. I thought my waterbath canner only had 6 quarts but it holds seven so we have an empty jar in there to keep them from bouncing around. Tomorrow night we will do seven jars. Getting 4-5 diced up peaches per jar. Probably by the time the peaches are done the pears will be ripe enough to can.
  7. Saintsfan just rolled when I read him this. He said "you women are so evil" Don't let him fool you though. He is city bred through and through. You should see him trying to catch chickens. He is learning. Tonight he helped can peaches. He loves the chickens and spoils them with watermelon rinds. I have got him cooking from scratch more and more. As long as he has a simple recipe to follow he is good.
  8. Sorry Annarchy, I think the closest they get to you is Clayton NM. If you want to pay $80 a box they will FedEx you a box.
  9. The Colorado peach truck was in town this week and I made my yearly purchase of peaches and pears. Last year I froze peaches and made peach butter. This year I am canning both peaches and pears. Was hoping to do them over the weekend but they were still too green so I will be doing a box a night this week.
  10. All I can say is YAY today is the first time I have logged on in a while because of the "unsafe site" warning. Today I did not get that warning I went straight to Mrs. S. YAY!!!
  11. I just put mine to work last night. I bought some fresh herbs and dried them. Heck a lot cheaper than the bottles and fresher too.
  12. I was just thinking about buying them as samples then if I like them I would buy the cans. I don't trust bags for long term either. If I did buy bags I would be moving them to glass jars ASAP
  13. Has anyone tried the new Emergency Essentials pouches? I have wanted to try some of their items but didn't want to purchase a large can. Even their smaller cans were a little too much to try. But, I am thinking that since most of the pouches are $3-$5 I may just give them a try.
  14. Ok looks like I wasn't the only one that got it. This was the first time.
  15. Dang better get my forever stamps for work ordered. Geezzzz

  19. Change your batteries too, not only in your cocks but the smoke detectors and check you fire extinguishers also.
  20. Oh wow been on vacation and trying to catch up. Congrats on the move. Praying all goes as smooth as possible. Look forward to updates
  21. In Alabama in the 70's they used those "shot" guns to give kids in school booster vaccines. I was on of those kids and they only did it one year because kids would jump and it would cut their arms or they would tighten up and they would have huge knots in the muscle where they got the shots. I hated those stupid guns they hurt.
  22. Thanks Kappy dell, I saw their page and bookmarked it. My nephew lives down on the Gulf and loves fishing. He has been catching tuna, he told me bring my canner and come down one weekend and he will load me up.
  23. Thanks for the video. I think I will try her method.
