  1. Hummm, I have been wondering about these and an instant pot. If I had to choose I would probably go with the air fryer because I have 3 crockpots and they work just fine.
  2. We have a friend that is cleaning out his garage and getting ready to have a big yard sale. He called me and said he had some cast iron and wanted to know if I wanted. Of course I went over there and walked away with a Dutch oven and lid. One without a lid, a griddle and a roaster. The best part was he gave me a Dutch Oven cookbook. It has some awesome recipes and all for the Dutch oven.
  3. Oh yes. Hubby loves pasta. Please do share. Believe it or not I just searched sour dough starter on here and it let me to this thread.
  4. Bumping this up so that I can find it again. I need to use some of these recipes. Since we are down on income it is back to poverty cooking. No more fancy store bread. Actually we don't eat enough to warrant spending the money on a loaf of bread. It usually ruins before we finish it.
  5. No garden here this year, going to try herbs in pots we will see what happens. We are dog sitting for the youngest son, who is coming out of the truck to be a border patrol agent. He is now driving local until his application process is complete for border patrol and the company does not allow dogs on local runs, so mom and dad to the rescue. I will just have to drool over y'all's gardens. LOL
  6. I am trying to find a balance for our diet. Let me stop right here and say diet is not to loose weight (which I need to do and am doing slowly) but a way of life. Both of hubby and I have to face the fact that some health issues run in our families, like heart, diabetes and dementia. We have pretty much phased out processed foods. No frozen dinners, no hamburger helper boxes and no sodas. Pretty much everything is cooked from scratch. But even then just reading "health" advice and "diet" suggestions has my head spinning. I ran across a little book I bought many, many years ago. The copyright is 2002. It is called Manna from Heaven, by Charmaine Rivers. It has me looking at our food choices differently. Our choices were not bad as a matter of fact they are really Biblically based and I wasn't even trying. I am just trying to find more ways to was to incorporate "good" food into our diet. Like dates, figs, nuts, and other healthy choices. In this little book is a recipe for Date Nut Bread. It is not sweet and hubby really liked it. The only change is I used raisins instead of cranberries because that is what I had. 8oz chopped dates 1oz dried cranberries ( I used raisins) 1/2c brown sugar, packed 1/4c soften butter 3/4 cup boiling water 1 egg, well beaten 1 teaspoon of baking soda 1 3/4c flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2c chopped almonds or walnuts ( I used walnuts) Bring water to a boil, turn off heat and add dates, cranberries, brown sugar and butter. Stir until butter is melted and sugar is integrated. Let cool then beat in egg. Sift together baking soda, salt and flour. Add to mixture, stirring not beating. Fold in nuts. Put mixture in a light greased pan and bake for one hour. Cool on rack for 10 minutes, then remove from pan. Serve when completely cool. Ok if you notice there is no oven setting so I used 350 degrees and cooked it for 45 minutes. We are at 3,000 plus elevation. I used a 8x8 pan. It came out thin but we were good with it like that. No hubby did not let it cool before asking for some. I cut it down the middle then cut it into inch and half strips. It was good warm. There are other recipes in this book that I am going to try but I have to wait until I go grocery shopping. I need figs and I am afraid they will have to be dried since it is too early in the season for them. I shared all this because I have been studying the foods of the Bible and I plan on adapting our diet to a more biblical based food pyramid. Well as much as I can living in beef country. I will share my resources if anyone is interested. 2018 is the year that we take back our health and break the chains that big cooperate food venders have on us.
  7. Thanks Mt_Rider. Praying they are all well and on the fast track to recovery.
  8. Have I missed a post? I was wondering how Wormie and Mrs. Wormie were doing, has anyone heard?
  9. Pauline I got yours today and I Snowmom's Saturday. Love them both.
  10. Maybe next year I will ask Santa for one. This year I am getting a new water heater
  11. I got mine from Annarchy too. She has been peeking in my ornament boxes. LOVE IT!!! Mine are in the mail but since today is Veterans Day they are still sitting here in town. Everyone should have theirs by week end.
  12. Uhmmm no not happening. This is why I have packages delivered to work. Or track them online and since I am good friends with the UPS driver here make arrangements to meet him at my house. No one and I do mean no one unless I pushed out out of my whowho gets a key to my house.
  13. OMG let me tell you how I spiced up canned pintos. At the church where I work they have Wed nite dinner. Well the cook called in sick and it was Wednesday. So the pastor and I came up with Mexican Stack. Which is basically taco salad. So I ran to the store and bought everything needed. I got the bright idea to make charro beans and cilantro lime rice but couldn't find everything needed for the beans. So I though well what I have will have to do. Here is what I used... 1 #10 can pintos 3 cans of fire roasted tomatoes 1 onion diced 1 bunch of cilantro diced ham (bought a small pack of sliced ham and diced it) 5 fresh jalapenos (deseeded and diced_ lime juice from one lime. 2 tablespoons minced garlic 1 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin Put in the crock pot on high for 3 hours. They loved it. Had lots of calls for the recipe today. I am thinking this would be great using dry beans and a ham bone. Cooking on low all day. Serve with cornbread and you have a meal
  14. MtRider, it is just our area. Here people got greedy when oil was $150 a barrel and they over pumped. They basically flooded the market. We are small town /agri rural and yes the main job provider cut back big time which caused two plants here to do major cut backs and a lot of the little roustabout companies went where there was work or closed up shop. I still have my job at the church but well no benefits and the pay is good for a church but not enough to support a family on and make house payments.
  15. It was AWESOME. If I ever win the lottery I think I could live in the mountains, it was beautiful.
  16. Wow, I missed it all. We were on vacation. Thank you ladies for getting everything back up and running.
  17. How did I ever miss this post. I am bookmarking the link until I can go through it and print off some recipes. We are trying to add more dried beans to our diets and cut back on meats. This is wonderful. Thank you!
  18. When we lived in NC we had three college age boys at home. Man I thought it was tough feeding them when they were kids and played sports. I learned to cook just about everything from scratch. I remember one time Kroger had an AWESOME sale and I stocked up. My shopping cart was overflowing. I had like 5 5# bags of unbleached flower, cornmeal, all your basic supplies and this lady looked at my shopping cart and said "Do you know what to do with all of that?" I was floored. This lady was older than me (I was mid 40's at the time) I said yes I cook everything from scratch. She was shocked. She said I need to come to your house and learn to cook. I asked if she knew how to make pie crust and homemade bread. She said no she never learned. I just looked at her and smile and pushed my cart on down the isle. Even now with an empty nest we still cook 99% of the stuff from scratch. So much healthier.
  19. Nothing ... nada...nope nothing new to update. He is still putting in applications. We are praying about moving. I really don't want to move to a large city but we are going to have to go where there is work. The oil field is shut down here which is making other jobs fold up and leave. Landscaping used to be an option but hubby has problems with his back. He has nothing between the S1, L5 & L4. So pick up heavy stuff and bending is limited. Please continue your prayers.
  20. Well we are home from vacation. Went to AR, it was really hard to pack up and come back. Now to catch up on all that went on here on Mrs S. while we were gone. Oh My...
  21. Oh please tell me I am not too late. I have been on vacation and didn't see this before we left.
  22. Still no news. He did have an interview for the mail room job last week but haven't heard anything else. Please continue praying, I am getting to the panic mode.
