  1. All the recipes I've seen for canning mushrooms says pint of half pint jars. We only have 1 in the house that eats them. Why can I not use 4 oz jars? Or is it that that small of a jar isn't typical, & you're just not supposed to go larger? Help, I REALLY want to do 4 ouncers
  2. PS- my mum brought us about 6# or more of grapes, hence the grape stuff
  3. I picked up 80# of fruit on Friday- peaches, pears, plums. So far in the past couple days- peach salsa, mixed fruit butter, peach butter & grapple "jam" (might be more of a grapple relish, LOL). I've got some soft pears cooking to run through the mill for pear butter. On the plan- peach jam, plum butter, vanilla pear jam & I dunno what else. If you don't hear from me for a few days, I've gone into a sugar coma from taste testing
  4. I agree! Tell him happy birthday from me
  5. I've canned fully cooked beans many times. You can fill the jar to just below headspace, then top with liquid, being extra careful to remove air (since they're larger & a little more compacted together from being soft & cooked. The only thing is- if you don't like mushy/super soft beans, this won't be for you. They will get MUCH softer in the canner.
  6. AWWWWW!! That made me tear up a little
  7. I've been doing this all afternoon, & I can vouch that most of them are sealing. I cannot vouch that they'll last for decades, but I don't see why not. It seems to be the general concensus on the web, though
  8. It was SRN: http://selfreliantnetwork11.blogspot.com/2012/04/oven-canning-preserves-dry-goods-for.html
  9. Well, I thought I found it on alpharubicon, but I can't find it now. Maybe wrong site. Was going to link it. *sigh*
  10. Oven. Keep in mind, DRY goods. I'm not canning perishables in the oven
  11. I think so, like salsa jar lids- http://www.thehoneyjarhome.com/image/cache/data/Product%20Photos/43GoldLidInside-400x400.jpg The Santa Cruz bottles, I have some that are 96oz, so a bit big for ketchup, IMHO, LOL!! The rest are qt sized, though. Still maybe big for ketchup, but I want to use them for dry goods. So do you think the bottles below will work? They go on with about a half turn or so, & have the tabs like the pic above. Thanks Twilight! http://whoopiecookie.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/js332.jpg http://www.coupongeek.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/santa-cruz-organic-juice-coupon.jpeg
  12. I will help you fill your tree (and anyone else that signs up)! I got a Cricut Christmas before last & LOVE it! I have made so many gorgeous things!!
  13. I was reading instructions on dry canning to extend the life of dry goods (oats, rice, flour, etc). The instructions called for using jars with 2 piece lids & something about using old jars (but no details on the latter). This leads me to believe we can also use jars & bottles with lug lids? I have several Santa Cruz Organic juice bottles. Has anyone tried this with lug lids? This is the first time I've decided I want to try this, so I'm hoping I can do this at a low cost. I found mites in a bucket of food, so it's time to try the new.
  14. My newest to me favourite thing! Hubba brought it home, as they were tossing it. I'm on track for having it filled up with goodies SOON! (Excuse the poor cell phone pic. This is in the basement = dark &.... basement-y)
  15. You guys know how to ruin a girl's peaceful moments *shakes head*
  16. This made me smile! Today was my milk/egg/meat run to the farm, farmers market, went thrifting & hit a yard sale. Got some FAB deals today- vintage-ish GE cast iron waffle maker (electric) $8, brand new Farberware immersion blender (NIB still wrapped with plastic + the accessories) $3, NIB wireless kettle $3, some decor boxes, clothes, some bags/pouches for kits & some misc. I have to go buy taters, can peach butter & putz around for a bit- cleaning & organizing, putting away groceries, inventory, etc. Hot outside, so I have to test the pool, so the kids can swim. Life IS good
  17. Woofty! In the past week or so, I've canned 62 jars of stuff PLUS 2 that didn't seal PLUS 1 loss- various beans, meat, jams, sauces, etc!! I have cinnamon peach butter to do today, too. I put it in the slow cooker overnight to thicken & will plop it into jars to can, but that's looking to be at least 10 jars of that. Beef stock, I think, is next. I've got my 16qt roaster oven going with beef bone broth. That should be ready Mon. morning to can. I also have a bag of blackberries to make jam with, so that's next week, I hope. I wish I could do 60+ jars in a day like I used to, but my back doesn't allow it. I'm pretty happy with that in a few days
