  1. I love the idea of doors"in use" .Even if they don't go to a hidden area.why have wasted space? <G>
  2. We got a free day at Sam''s and by shopping carefully we found a few items. We also saw many items that were higher by far than any where else...potatoes being one of the very high priced items. Then when we got to the checkout counter they hit us with a 7% surcharge and after we had paid the the items were sacked there was a woman that met us at the door and went through each and every sack....... Needless to say we did not go back.... However we have a friend that lives several hours away that buys something like 18-20 sacks of dog food for her show dogs. She says it more than pays her to drive to Sam's... I like the food co-ops too, The one I went to was 1 1/2 hour away but I got things I could get no where else.. Once my life gets settled down where i can be home more often, I want to check on another one that is closer.
  3. When I was bringing in 3-5 gallons of goat milk at a time..... I pasteurized it for the kids then after it had cooled (but not always if I was not thinking ) I would dump a container of live culture yogurt into the bucket. By the time it was ready for the kids(morning milk was evening feeding, evening milk was morning feeding), the milk would have turned into a lovely yogurt consistency. I did not have time or energy to make yogurt for myself...but the definite thing is to use live culture if you start with store bought.
  4. http://themissouritorch.com/2013/10/01/missouri-health-exchanges-open-fail/ All the money paid into the insurance companies and never paid out......... some that are bowing out are going to laugh all the way to the bank
  5. The weighted vest could be similar to the wraps they put on dogs during storms that are afraid of thunder. Babies wrapped in swaddling clothes are more calm that those that are not. The headphones sound good too.
  6. Children with autism can frequently hear noises that others can't to an exaggerated level of sound, dumping toys on a table could sound like and explosion..a raindrop can sound like a hammer beating on a metal gong.. But autism affects differently ,finding the best route is going to take time
  7. i have seen advertisements of those for the last 50 years. I do not know about the end product or why they have never caught on to be a regular in everyone's garden. Both potatoes and tomatoes are of the nightshade family (as well as peppers, tomatillos, eggplant and others)

    Laundry soap

After using my homemade laundry detergent for years, it did less than perfection. I would start using commercial detergents to clean the clothes. Whereas i prefer the homemade, it does not work in all water for all clothes. Here at this place it is a disaster. I have a friend with iron water plus other minerals and she uses. only ( 1/2 cup < >) borax and (1/2 cup < > )ammonia, clothes and washer look clean. I am going to try that for a month and see what the results are.
  9. You have the chance of shingles if you had chicken pox in your youth/past. If you have never had chicken pox you can still get it and the older you are the worse it is. If you have shingles you should not be around people(usually the very young) as they may get chicken pox from your shingles. I have had both chicken pox(in my youth) and shingles in the last 10 years. I do not wish for anyone to get shingles anywhere on their body!!!!
  10. Garden produce, for vegetables fresh and canned Meat...range chickens (eggs), maybe a goat kid or once in a while a pig Fish from the pond Milk/butter from the goats or the neighbors cow We bought staples- flour, sugar, salt, shortening. Momma would toast the bread very dark before adding the milk gravy which might have sausage,or chicken in it. Something I still like! But because that had been my diet with only rarely red meat, when I was expecting my first child I had to eat liver or beef preferably 3 times a week...
  11. First time ever to make chutney. The first made 17 1/2 pints. Pear base, raisins, dried cranberries, onion, mustard seed, pineapple, carrots, celery, a few chopped dates, nutmeg and cinnamon, brown sugar , a little white sugar and a little sleepy honey 2nd batch 6 pints same as above without the onion or cranberries plus one small hot pepper, 1/2 of a small zucchini and a pint of extra sour apple sauce brown sugar and a little molasses You can make chutney with anything that goes together!!
  12. It is not only Ohio but also California...believe it was not in California first , but identified in Ohio. It could be in many other states as well just not identified.
  13. You know if you always wash your dishes in a pan you can easier save water and carry that good stuff to your plants. I think these vertical walls are a great way for anyone- apartment dwellers or... to raise a garden- no excuse not too!
  14. Wishing you silver linings behind every cloud. Have a great year!
  15. Not just now but for the whole year, wishing you the best !
  16. I've seen this with the letters out of order, but this is the first time I've seen it with numbers. Good example of a Brain Study: If you can read this OUT LOUD, you have a strong mind. And better than that: Alzheimer's is a long, long way down the road before it ever gets anywhere near you. 7H15 M3554G3 53RV35 7O PR0V3 H0W 0UR M1ND5 C4N D0 4M4Z1NG 7H1NG5! 1MPR3551V3 7H1NG5! 1N 7H3 B3G1NN1NG 17 WA5 H4RD BU7 N0W, 0N 7H15 LIN3 Y0UR M1ND 1S R34D1NG 17 4U70M471C4LLY W17H 0U7 3V3N 7H1NK1NG 4B0U7 17, B3 PROUD! 0NLY C3R741N P30PL3 C4N R3AD 7H15. PL3453 F0RW4RD 1F U C4N R34D 7H15. To my 'selected' strong-minded friends: If you can read the following paragraph, forward it on to your friends with 'yes' in the subject line. Only great minds can read this. This is weird, but interesting! If you can read this, you have a strong mind, too. Can you read this? Only 55 people out of 100 can. I cdnuolt blveiee that I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd what I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in what oerdr the ltteres in a word are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is that the frsit and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can still raed it whotuit a pboerlm. This is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the word as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? 17. Pears! 6 pints plain- 4 cups sugar to 3qts water syrup.......same syrup for all 6 pints spiced- 1 star anise, vanilla bean, 1 peppercorn in each jar 4 pints gingered- 1 piece of candied ginger in each jar
  18. I may or may not be older than a lot of you. But we were brought up from scratch, lived off of what we had, washed with a wringer washer until I was 31, hung out out my clothes for all but maybe 2-3 years of my life. Recently, the last two -three months , with a washer that was working sporadically then not at all, I started washing by hand. I had done so when I first moved here because the house was being worked on (repair/rebuilding that was not planned in the purchase decision ) but now without a washer I am washing everything by hand. Yes i could buy another washer....but I have no faith in these modern conveniences that last for one year then fall apart.... My washer has a 10 year warranty on the transmission, 2 years all over,... two years and the washer is dead! It is not the transmission so i am out of luck. But if power goes down completely, ....you talk about generators, they take fuel and yes some of you are storing fuel, not gas I think ,, but anyway, some of these work methods you see on these totally off grid- NO power farms - as 100 years ago- not counting windmills, and stream turbines/generators, may very well come in handy. We have become soft, in expecting everything made easier for us..............all of this can be taken away.... ALL
  19. C4C, My heart goes out for you I am so glad you have an understanding husband. I hope the future will bring you the strength that you need in the future, with peace and assurance to deal with it.
  20. Cat You are proof beauty can rise from ashes. After your own unhappy upbringing you have created your own loving family showing them love you did not get. You are instilling traits that will never be forgotten- at least I hope they will not! Thank you so much for sharing
  21. If you are calling lug lids the ones that twist on but not screw.....I have used them over and over for years and find they make a tighter seal than regular two piece. I have never used the long neck narrow mouth like the old catsup glass bottles but I know the Mennonites saved them and used them exclusively for catsup.
  22. I agree, I figure shipping in before i bid to see if it is worth it. If close enough you can pick it up cheaper. But i have received some extra good bargain through them. UPS rates are cheaper than Fed ex
