  1. Only a few days to go..have you made any plans for Thanksgiving? DH and I will be alone.I did invite my friend who just lost her hubby but she wants to be alone. She has been offered dinner at 4 different places that I know of but she is a loner type and is happy about it. I have not settled on the menu yet. I want to make something different but nothing sounds good right now. Neither one of us is in the turkey mood this year. I will probably end up with prime rib. I'll make most of the traditional sides though..just no turkey.
  2. I've been awol for a bit..too much going on again! We had to do alot of septic work. Not in the budget but had to be done. We went several days without a flushing toilet. Definitely not fun. DH has had a slew of Dr. appts. Nothing serious but he is aging so things are slowing down bit by bit. He is still losing weight. He still looks good but soon he will probably start looking haggard. Sometimes it is rough when you love someone so much and they are slowly going downhill. I really try to cherish him as much as I can. He is such a good man. Another friend died. He suffered so much and all 3 of his children had already died so he was having a hard time. Our neighbors have acquired a pack of dogs. They have been coming over here to eat our food. They also killed some chickens and scare our dogs. I feel for the dogs since they are neglected. The neighbor is an idiot so there is no use talking to him about it. DH has been having to beef up our dog food protection, chicken pen etc. It sure doesn't seem like the holidays are nearly here again. It seems like it's every month or so. I sure hope this is an "easy week" with no big problems. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
  3. I think my son's family singlehandedly keeps Amazon in business. Some days they have multiple deliveries, He says they spend over $1,000 a month there! I wish I had $1,000 dollars a month!
  4. I filled up yesterday at $2.09..hope it stays there for awhile.
  5. Good for you for keeping up with walking through all you and DH's health issues!
  6. This week has got to be better. I have just gone through another week from..well you know where. We spent all week and a ton of money trying to get our septic working right. We had to run new lines, pump etc and we still can't use our drains. Something is blocking it. Dh has spent the last 2 days trying to unblock it. He was trying to save some money doing it himself but all we did was waste two days and some more money buying tools. I am so frustrated and I feel bad for DH. He was worked hard and is very handy, but this is beyond him. He is just too old to be working so hard. It leaves him short of breath and having to use his oxygen for a long time. I finally called a plumber this am. I only hope it is not super expensive like the other stuff was. The leaves are finally starting to fall this weekend. It sure seems late in the year. We also had several mice on the loose. They were huge too! Apparently they discovered the dog food barrel that DH forgot to cover. We set a big rat trap and one of the mice hit it and turned it upside down. The next am I woke up and looked out the window and the trap was upside down on the porch railing with the little mouse swaying upside down by his tail. What a picture. At least the weather is beautiful but it would be nice to bathe and wash dishes! I hope everyone has a good week.
  7. I tried Wal Mart a few months back and ordered 3 items. It took 2 weeks to get two items and the third one never showed up. They did issue a refund easily though. I guess I should try again and give them another chance since it should be more convenient. I have heard that some older folks order the big 50 pound bags of dog food to help get it home. Good idea!
  8. Yesterday was spent spinning our wheels, You know the kind of day where Lowe's is out of stock..can't get any help. Dh got frustrated and it seems like everything else we tried to get done had some sort of snag. Frustrating. If I hear "sorry about that" one more time..grrr. It was also my dead Mom's bday and it makes me think about her all day long. On the good side, my Aunt (Moms sister) called and we chatted for 2 hours. She is my only "normal" relative so I enjoy talking to her. We talk about once a month and it is always fun. It is finally cooling down but we still have all our leaves on the trees. DH and I are trying to get alot done outside while it is so nice. I don't think we'll ever get caught up. I told DH he'll need to live to 100 to get his chore list completed. I hope all of us struggling with pain and chronic conditions have a painfree day!
  9. Vic that was pretty good. A liberal yankee having slave owner relatives who served in the confederacy. This weeks episode was pretty good too. Carly SImon turned out to be about 10% African American. Fred Armisted (sp?) thought he was part Japanese, but he was actually part Korean from a very prominent family. They traced his family back to 69 BC. WOW.
  10. I am up bright and early drinking my Earl Grey tea catching up on my surfing. I have another busy day planned full of exciting errands! Jeepers I found out in August that my back is in terrible shape. I had no idea until I had a devastating pain with no warning. I had my first MRI ever and some x-rays. My Dr. sent me to a physical therapist for one session. She showed me about 10 exercises that should help strengthen my back. I guess that's all my insurance will cover. SO far (knock on wood) I have not had a serious recurrence but I do fear another one. MtRIder Welcome back to 2017! LOL WE2 your canning looks great. We didn't plant a big garden this year so we didn't have enough excess produce. I wish we were up to having a larger garden so I would have a pretty pantry like you. Got to go fix my sweetie his breakfast and then on to the chores. Have a great day all!
  11. They had a new episode last night with Larry David and Bernie Sanders. They both had similar backgrounds with Polish/German Jewish backgrounds. It was very interesting historically. At the very end they found out they were related through their DNA tests. Kind of ironic since David has played Bernie on SNL.
  12. Another day in paradise..lol. It is 10:45 and still no Sunday morning paper. It's bad enough it's not a daily paper anymore, but you would think when you only deliver 3 days a week it would be easier to be on time. Can't watch the news on TV either because our wonderful Spectrum/Charter is off the air since last night. You can't even call about it because their robot phone won't answer. The message says the call didn't go through. I guess this means I'll get a no service credit from both of them with no hassle. SURE At least the weather is gorgeous. DH and I have plenty to do and at least we won't be sweating doing chores. I'm making one of his faves for dinner, country fried steak, cream gravy, mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. Mr. Momo will be very happy.
  13. We get alot of mice in our barn and garage. The only cat I have now is strictly indoor and does not have the mouse killer instinct anyway. Poor DH is busy setting up glue traps and the spring loaded traps too. We do have a mini schnauser and they are good mousers. They prefer to catch and wound them though. Ambergris I hope you get that bite taken care of. Spider bites can be dangerous. My neighbor found a small snake in her house yesterday. Now she is super nervous! Today the town near us is having their mile long yard sale. I really don't need to go since I already have too many "collectibles" JUNK. DH wants to go because alot of vendors sell goodies to eat. He's all about eating, and he needs to gain back some of the weight he lost at the hospital. The heat finally broke last night so it is gorgeous outdoors right now.
  14. Thanks for all the anniversary wishes. We enjoyed our meal out. We each had fried catfish, stuffed crabs, baked potatoes, slaw, cornbread and pickled onions at a lakefront table. I was stuffed! I was glad DH ate alot. He has been losing weight lately and managed to lose 10 pounds from being in the hospital for 4 days. (I need to go there for a few months..lol) Another hot day coming. We have a cold front coming in tomorrow so we should get some nicer temps soon. I am so happy for you Annarchy! DH worked in Texas for six months and we stayed in the Arlington area. I remember it being hot and really quick changing weather. I have to get my teeth cleaned this afternoon so I'm putting a pot roast in the crockpot so dinner will be ready when we get back. Hopefully we have a smooth day with nothing breaking. Enjoy the day.
  15. I too have not slept well at all either since I hurt my back last month. The only good night sleep I have had in the past month is the night DH came home from the hospital. I went into a much needed coma that night..lol Today is our anniversary. Not too romantic but a friend of ours is taking us both out for dinner at a real restaurant. I will enjoy a nice free meal. We have been trying to get everything outdoors cleaned up for the winter ahead. It is still hot, but any day now it should cool down. We only have one 3 tomato plants producing now and they are slowing down. I really should plant some winter crops but don't know if I will make it in time. It seems like we never get caught up. I guess that's part of getting older and slower. I know have to schedule in a nap/quiet time for about 1-2 hours in the afternoon. Have a great Sunday folks!
  16. Thanks Annarchy! You are so cool!
  17. I posted this in the Pinching Pennies Forum..I don't know how it got here and I can't figure out how to move it with this new forum set up. Grrrr Very true MtnRIder..places like WalMart sell some 3 month maintenance drugs for $10 which is alot less than using your Medicare Part D insurance.
  18. DH was released from hospital yesterday with 3 new prescriptions. I have already checked out the prices with and without insurance at various pharms and have found ways to save alot of money. It is not always cheapest to use insurance. It pays to shop around. I also have the Doctor write 3 separate prescriptions (instead of 3 on one sheet) which makes it easier to use different pharmacies.
  19. Today has been hectic so far. DH was in the hospital with heart issues from Friday night to yesterday afternoon. Being off schedule and being at the hospital with him has left a nice bunch of catching up to do around here. I am taking a mini break for a few minutes right now. Fortunately DH only had a minor attack with little heart damage. I am trying to keep him on limited activity for a bit but he is outdoors already checking on his pecan crop and chickens. I guess that is good I just don't want him to overdo it. He's not a spring chicken anymore. It turned back to hot summer about 3 days ago. I got all excited about the cool weather 2 weeks ago but summer came back. It has been in the upper 80's with humidity. Yuk. Another week of this at least. The garden is about finished ..just 3 tomato plants till producing. We had a good tomato year but not much else. Enjoy the day!
  20. It is another month later and Aldi's is still selling eggs and milk at these prices!

    Quick update

I hope your wife can get some relief. Health issues are about the worst thing there is. I sympathize since I just found out last week that my back is shot too. At least I am still somewhat mobile. I can't imagine how hard it is for you both to cope. I will be thinking and praying for you both.
  22. For the past month eggs and milk have been very cheap at Aldi's. Today a gallon of milk (any kind whole, skim or 2%) was 79 cents and a dozen large eggs was 25 cents. Neither of these have been advertised so I'm guessing it's not a national sale but keep your eye out at your local store!
  23. I was in the store looking at the Simplicity vintage pattern section and some were patterns I still have from high school. LOl. I guess I'm old enough to be vintage now.
  24. What sad news. I wish there was something we could do or say to help out.
