  1. Oh dear! I hope they feel much better soon. Which state is it that you're going to?
  2. Good Morning ! I enjoy reading what everyone is up to. Annarchy, you are brave! My climbing limit is the third step on a four foot step ladder. I am impressed that you could do that roof! A bobcat! My DDs saw a young one last spring and got a picture through the leaves. It was about a mile from our house. Miki, I had to google Following Atticus. Sounds good. Welcome back Ambergris! Jeepers, I get that nesting instinct too this time of year. I want to start decluttering and getting rid of stuff. Homesteader, Yay! about the plants! If we moved I would be digging up lots of plants to take with me. What are some of the plants you took with you? Last week, DH's uncle (who is about DH's age and they are very close, like brothers) got a detached retina and had surgery. He and his wife had planned to put a new roof on their house as soon as they got home from FL last weekend. He got the detached retina on Saturday, she drove home Sunday and he saw the doctor on Tuesday (he was out of town Monday), had the surgery on Wednesday. So their oldest daughter gathered up a volunteer work crew to do the roof today. DH and DS left at 6 am this morning to help. It's a two hour drive. Please pray for everyone's safety as they do the roof, etc. So Mom, DD and I are here at home for the day with big project lists and deciding what we want to accomplish. I have my to-do list all written out. I don't know what DD plans to do. Mom has some more beans to shell. She's limited by her very poor eyesight. She has shelled all our beans this year. Probably more than 10 bushels in the shell. It makes her feel like she contributes tot he family and it most certainly saves us a bunch of time! Some things on my list: 1. dig at least five goldenrod clumps out of the driveway flower bed 2. plant daffodils 3. wash cans (emptied spoiled food from cellar last week, soaked cans in bleach water) 4. work toward planting my four little herb plans (marshmallow, sage, thyme, salad burnet) This involves cleaning out the partially buried fiberglass tub-weeds 5. carry in firewood for the night 6. church treasurer work 7. wash and put our to dry my tomato seeds. They are now fermenting in little plastic containers. Some are ready to wash & dry, some aren't. There is more but that's enough to list. Hope you all have a great day.
  3. Everyone has a lot going on, looks like! I hope everyone's appts and projects go well. It's raining hard this morning after many days of glorious sunny weather. Windy too. It's supposed to be much cooler today and will probably freeze tonight or Saturday night. DD and I picked everything yesterday but we didn't have daylight to get the winter squashes off of the little trailer so we have to do that today in the rain. We picked tomatoes, peppers, okra, kiwis, pears, dill. After dark, I brought all my houseplants in off the deck and got most of them situated. I can't figure out where to put some of them. I can't remember how I had them arranged last winter. DH and DS have to fix the exhaust system and put tires on the truck so it can pass inspection next week. Thankfully they can work on it in Cousin's huge garage and he has a tire changer too. The Christmas tree grower's are starting to cut trees now. Cousin begins the 24th. It's such a hectic time of year for them. So today, we'll be dealing with the houseplants and all the produce we picked is that's all over the kitchen, dining room and in the hall.
  4. Yay! I know you have been looking forward to this move. Hope all goes well.
  5. More applesauce yesterday! We canned 77 quarts from 6 bushels of apples. We also have several gallons of juice to can today. Miki, did you find that Beautiful Joe affected the way you feel about animals? Wind can be SO tiring. I really feel for the stainers.
  6. Glad you had a good visit with baby and family. Mt Rider, what a hassle for you but good that the porch is clean. Our porch needs a good decluttering too. I had 8 pints of spaghetti sauce, canner is now cooling down.
  7. Homesteader, that's wonderful to be so much closer to you mom. I understand you joy about being outside too. I'm that way.
  8. Yesterday DD and I scrounged up 30# of tomatoes and started another batch of spaghetti sauce. This one will be onion/garlic free too. Today, I have to put the celery, green pepper and herbs in it, cook it down and can it. We have peppers to freeze and beans to pick, house to clean, etc.
  9. I loved Five Little Peppers too! Every Christmas and birthday, my Mom's father bought me books. Some of my favorites were Heidi, Heidi Grows Up, Beautiful Joe (written from a dog, Joe's prospective) Joe was abused and then rescued by some good folks who take in other dogs. Very good for fostering kindness for animals. Also Black Beauty (about horses). Five Little Peppers Midway and others that will probably come to mind later.
  10. Oh Mt Rider, we didn't do the applesauce and the tomato sauces all in the same day! I do indeed have a head cold. I had to reschedule Mom's appointment at the Cancer Center today because I feel so badly. Homesteader, that is so exciting! You're getting a great start on a good garden for next year. Jeepers, I second the enjoyment recommendation WE2, I have experience with charcoal! It's a wonderful remedy but sure can make a mess.
  11. We got our two bins of apples Thursday. Sold 24 bushels and kept 16. We made applesauce yesterday from 5 bushels. Got 74 qts of sauce and 12 half gallons of juice. I picked all the ripe tomatoes and peppers in the Barn Garden and the Creek Garden before dark. I think I'll have enough romas to make a third batch of spaghetti sauce. We made 10 pints with onion and garlic for DH and Mom, then 8 or 9 pts for DD and me without that, since we can't eat alliums. It was thicker than the first batch and didn't make as much and oh so delicious!! So we want to make another one for us. It was 32 degrees this morning and some frost but didn't seem to hurt anything. We still have lots of green cherry tomatoes and green peppers. Then today, I feel like I'm taking ANOTHER cold! Today, I canned the last of the juice, swept the downstairs and mopped the kitchen. That totally wore me out. After I rest a bit, I want to go to the Barn Garden and pick the okra. I saw it yesterday but forgot to take a knife with me and didn't want to come back to the house to get one. DD is making bread. I need to deal with my tomato seeds. You have to put them in lidded containers and let a white fungus grow over them, then wash them in a sieve under running water, then spread out to dry. I have several varieties "incubating" and 3 or 4 more to fix up. This is supposed to kill viruses, etc. Homesteader, yay for you!
  12. Thanks for the input, ladies. I guess I could just order a couple of boxes and try them out.
  13. Thanks! Fred's is where I get my regular lids or rather DH's sister gets them for me. The Fred's is 1.75 hrs away in NC. They never have the wide mouth though. The store locator found two stores in TN, one about an hour away and the other 2 hrs away. If these Orchard Road lids are good, you can't beat that price! I hope someone has tried them and will chime in.
  14. Here is a link to Fillmore Container who sells the Orchard Road dome lids. The wide mouth lids are only $1.89 per dz. Walmart, who has the cheapest price around, sells Ball wm lids for $3.99. I use Golden harvest all the time with no problem but can't find a cheap source of wide mouth lids. http://www.fillmorecontainer.com/Orchard-Road-Widemouth-Dome-Lids-P6176.aspx?c=0
  15. Exciting!! I can imagine how tired you must be. Hope all goes well.
  16. WE2, what a neat idea! I'll share this with DD who crochets. Maybe she can make some for us. Thanks! I didn't cough all night last night so got some sleep. I feel a bit better today.
  17. We've had wonderful weather for a few weeks. Today was partly cloudy and cool when the sun was behind clouds. Fall is not my favorite season. There is so much work to do around here and knowing it's a precursor to winter makes it seem sad to me.
  18. Good to know it does go away! It's quite discouraging as you probably know.
  19. Not doing much today. We went to bed at 9 pm last night and I coughed until midnight, then DH took over and coughed until about 2 am. I stated coughing about 3 am but came downstairs so I wouldn't wake him up. I was just falling asleep about 6:30 when he came downstairs. Got to figure out some good natural remedies for a dry cough.
  20. MR, I hope that doesn't happen very often either! Well, I got four of the eight seed bean varieties picked. It's not supposed to rain until after 11 am tomorrow so maybe I can pick more in the morning. I'm so tired now. Dd and DH both helped me at different times. DS still picking and shucking popcorn.
  21. DS had caught a cold last week, so Friday evening DH came down with it, Saturday morning, DD and I came down with it. Boo. So much work to do. It's supposed to rain Monday and we have ten varieties of beans to pick. Eight are to be saved for seed and two are 3 50' beds and 2 50' beds. The popcorn is ready to pick too. DS has been working on it as he has time between his job and and his cold. Low temps for the next few days are supposed to be 46 and 44. Also need to pick okra, tomatoes and maybe some peppers.
  22. DD1 came Monday morning and is leaving early tomorrow morning. We canned 6 qts spaghetti sauce, and 12 pts and 9 qts grape juice for her. Canned 4 pts okra and 12 pts of green soybeans for us. I have a few soybeans left that I hope to can tomorrow, Porbalby a couple of pts. Watching the canner of soybeans now.
  23. Jeepers, our church has a small food pantry and our liability insurance company will not allow us to give away expired food. I know, it's crazy if the people know and still want it. The Food Bank may have based their policy on their liability insurance regulations.
