  1. We saw two or three bats flying as we came home from church last Wednesday night. I hadn't seen any in ages. There is a fungus called White Nose that is killing off bats in the East. It's a sad situation.
  2. Is it only for TX residents? Where would one do the hands-on?
  3. We are planning to can nectarines today. We have about 11 bushels in the cooler still. Brought up 4 this week to ripen and can.
  4. I'm so sorry. It hurts, I know.
  5. That;s a great resource! Thanks!
  6. I'm struggling with fruit envy! A bear got nearly all our gooseberries. Birds got most of our blueberries. How many strawberry plants and raspberry plants do you have? I would love to have that many berries to put up!
  7. Our little neighborhood is like that. Of 14 fairly close neighbors, 7 have grandfathers or great-grandfathers who were brothers and 3 others are related by marriage to one of the families, i.e. my 3rd cousin married the son of an unrelated neighbor and his niece is another neighbor. So that makes only 4 neighbors unrelated to the rest of us. One is here sporadically, 2 live here full time but we are well acquainted with them and have a good relationship. The 3rd one, we don't know well but haven't had any problems with her.
  8. Thanks ladies for the tips! I tried googling how to sterilize seeds for sprouting and didn't find anything helpful. Sigh. I don't know what to do.
  9. I posted a question on this thread. What happened to it? I mentioned a salmonella scare with sprouts several years ago and that I got afraid to do sprouts. I used to sprout radishes, alfalfa, mung beans, etc. but I quit. I read somewhere that you needed to rinse your seeds in a chlorine bleach solution and I didn't think that sounded safe so I quit sprouting. Do these videos address salmonella in the seeds themselves? Do any of you know anything about it or have any advice about it? Thanks.
  10. When DH was coming down with shingles, DD2 read that vitamins B-12 and C would help. Ho took some high doses and his pain stopped. He continued to break out with the blisters but they didn't hurt anymore, just itched a little. When I was coming down with shingles, I did the same thing but my pain didn't stop. I was not miserable so I don't know if the pain was lessened to any degree, having nothing to compare it to. It only lasted 2-3 weeks. It is certainly worth a try.
  11. CGA, I was just going to ask you why you didn't like One Second After. Is that the reason? I've never read either of the books mentioned. Just wondering!
  12. Glad to see this! We haven't filed ours yet. How did you find this out?
  13. HazelStone said "Language errors drive me NUTS (I want to smack the 'I could care less' offenders with a rolled up newspaper). I'm also very quick to make or anticipate puns, and learn other languages pretty quickly." Even though my personality is different (INTJ), language errors really jump out at me! Listening to a sermon, it's quite distracting to me to hear "I have wrote" or whatever. My dear, precious DH is the king of double, triple, quadruple negatives. As in "I never did not tell nobody nothing"! Reading forum posts like "for all intensive purposes" or your instead of you're or "making due" instead of "making do" make me want to correct the poster but I refrain. sometimes I make a typo and post your instead of you're but I know better. Maybe they do to! Another one that drives me crazy is to hear some educated person say something like "John and myself went to town" or "He gave the whatever to John and myself". Arrg!!! I've heard that so many times on radio programs by people who should know better.
  14. I thought so too! I thought it was interesting that the nurse came to learn her trash bag technique to share with others. That's something to remember if ever in a highly contagious situation.
  15. I like Apologia science books best. They explain difficult concepts very well. When I was taking chemistry in college, I got the Apologia high school one and it really helped me. It had been 40 years since I had graduated from high school! I got an A in the chem class.
  16. This is a wonderful story! I apologize if someone has already posted this on the forum. http://fox4kc.com/2014/12/11/woman-who-saved-relatives-from-ebola-coming-to-u-s-for-nursing-school/
  17. I agree! Social occasions really drain me, DH and DD2. DH and DD1 are more extroverts. We have a church potluck once a month, a community free meal once a month in addition to the weekly worship service and weekly Bible study and that's about all I can stand. This month we've also got a church board meeting with supper and a baby shower. DH simply does not understand how visiting with and enjoying people can make me tired. And I do enjoy the visiting with them but it wears me out physically and mentally.
