  1. I wonder what the penalty is for not registering hives. Monsanto seems to be unstoppable
  2. that's a great link, robie, scary how many foods have gmo ingredients. Plus they sure start off early with even baby foods/formula. I don't even want to think of the impact on little, developing bodies. Scarier is how many of the products I can check off the list that I fed to my son, and my husband, self. I suppose learning late is better than not learning at all, but still... I think for me, it's time to learn to make more homemade things ... but even then, the matter of ensuring the whole ingredients aren't gmo, or who knows what else.
  3. I know most here are f-a-r more aware of what's in food than I am, so this may not come as a shock or as informative as it was for me, but I figured it may be of interest to some. While browsing around on YouTube, I came across a video that was based on this article, so I decided to read it ... yikes. Who at the FDA or other powers that be think things like "Beaver anal gland juice" is appropriate for human consumption -- I know there are nasty chemical concoctions put in processed foods, but for some reason those, while nasty and toxic, seem less ... I don't know ... ick inducing? That's superficial sounding of me, I understand, but as I read through the article that's the ingredient that stood out the most. I guess there's just something more (to me) gaggy than something made in a lab as opposed to a beaver's rear end Crazy thought I had afterward though ... the natural beaver butt ingredient is probably less toxic than the chemicals ... Anyhoo... the article... http://health.yahoo.net/experts/menshealth/12-scariest-things-your-food The 11 Scariest Things in Your FoodBy Bill Phillips and the Editors of Men's Health Feb 09, 2013
  4. No real plans ~ dh is working all weekend, and then again tomorrow (since he's working on Memorial Day, he gets a bonus day to use any time, which is nice). Today - babysitting. Yesterday I did some baking since the temps dropped so much -- downright chilly, which was good so I didn't have to worry about the oven making the apartment too hot. Ds wanted to do some yard saling, which may or may not happen, we're playing that one by ear. I like to stay in as much as I can on holiday weekends (not the I go out often as it is lol), esp., in the spring/summer because it seems safer that way. I am hoping that it's safer for everyone this year -- back at the end of last summer a few people drowned in the river not that far from here. We live along the highway, which runs along the river, and both get very busy -- river seems far more dangerous at times, with all the drinking folks do, then decide to go tubing or kayaking. We live down the road from the fire department/emt center, heart sinks when those water rescue crews go by with their lights on hoping they remain silent this weekend. with the colder temps, there should be fewer people in the water.
  5. never been to Texas myself, but it sounds like summer is to be avoided lol
  6. I hope things heal up quickly for you, and without surgery if at all possible. Is there anyone who can help you with the work, it seems like a painful day doing it on your own.
  7. Congratulations on the move, it sounds like a great place to move to
  8. That was such a close call! I can't imagine the worry and then dealing with the aftermath. The pictures are powerful to see, I can't imagine being right there and seeing it in person, let alone having it be my own property. Praying for things to be back to as close to pre-fire as they can be, for you, and your neighborhood
  9. I added a smidge of shampoo to a palm full of baking soda to use on my hair -- and wow, did it end up being super soft and very shiny! I've got long-ish hair (mid-to lower back) that I am trying to let grow longer, but was always frustrated with how blah it was looking - the baking soda seemed to do wonders for perking it up
  10. oh they are creepy buggers! we get them too, they're worse than the spiders and those beetles that look like ladybugs but aren't (and leave that nasty smell when you kill them).
  11. I got 4 miles in on the 5th, and another 4 on the 6th. After that, I'd call it lucky to have logged an additional 3 (if that) the rest of the week. My plan of jogging in the morning only worked once, and only for a mile (I woke up too late to get more in). The plan of walking while nephew napped fell through as well (grandma didn't think it was a good idea). So... going with the total of 10 miles for the week.
  12. my grandma had me afraid of the water for ages, because her favorite thing to say was "you can drown in a teaspoon of water!" -- in hinsight I think she opted for that because she worked the night shift and I kept being drawn to the lake we lived next to, and she wanted to dissuade me from wandering down there while she napped during the day. About 25+ yaers afterward, I caught myself blurting that out when my son got a little too close to the river's edge
  13. Happy (belated) Birthday!
  14. I *think* RainyGardener was doing a taste test review of different recipes ... but then again, maybe it wasn't her ... I think it *maybe* was though. LOL Jeepers we should unite our powers ... we'd be invinsible...or maybe not so much
  15. April 28 - May 4 = 12 miles (jogging) I missed 4 days this week -- lots of family drama going on, and I don't handle that sort of thing well, which led to slipping back in to some less healthy patterns (ben & Jerry are such comforting pals ~ and just sitting on the couch watching Keeping Up Appearances (I love Hyacinth ) with a pint (or so) of Ben & Jerry's doesn't count for many miles ... if it did .. watch out, I'd be racking them up ) Heading to Florida tomorrow, and will be gone 8 days, so I am determined I will at the very least walk or jog along the path by the river in the mornings before everyone else wakes up. If that falls through, my back up plan is to put my nephew in a stroller and walk around the path in the afternoon ~ he'll need a nap, and instead of staying indoors with him while he sleeps I can actually get some activity in. Well, that's my plan (both A and B ) so we'll see how it fairs. Feeling optimistic about it
  16. I wonder what new regulations are in play now, and if they will eventually extend to the home gardener at some point?? I wish I had more money to allocate toward food storage at the moment. Praying we all have the things we need before the regulations and such lead to too much of an issue in the future.
  17. it's crazy that they're printing dangerous techniques - anyone can set up a blog online and go praddling off this and that, but the printed books, I kind of expected that they'd have to be held to a higher standard. I am surprised the publishing companies concerned, if not for the readers, at least for their own liability. I'd think things would need to be checked for being factual, and safe. then again, if self-publishing is all the easier (and cheaper) these days, maybe that could be a factor in this stuff being printed without the fact checking/safety? Or, maybe they do have publishers and they just don't care Scary thinking of the people who will use these "resources" and end up hurt, or worse. I've sure learned to be a whole lot more discerning with where I get my info. I've been more selective with YouTube too -- some of the ladies I was tuning in to watch, I've stopped viewing ... mostly over the canning butter and such. I can see if they were saying it's unsafe but they still do it, at least giving the caution ~ but the "end" for me was when on their radio program (and video) where they were kind of teasing a friend of theirs who was afraid to use home canned butter she was given, and ranting on about how it's perfectly fine, and making remarks about fear mongers ... after that, I started looking at everything they shared with a skeptical eye, because one risky move could mean they'd have other (maybe less obvious) risks viewers/listeners may not as easily catch on to. And if they'd tease/encourage a friend to take a major risk, would they have any real concern for viewers? I doubt it. Not that I'm saying or thinking that they're bad people -- just kind of well... too risky for me I guess.
  18. I think this is the one she's referring to, Philbe: http://nchfp.uga.edu/ (scroll down to the bottom) I signed up for it when out_of_the_ordinary posted the link in the shoutbox not that long ago -- it took about 4 or 5 days for them to email the sign-in info, just wanted to mention that so you don't sign up and think they forgot or anything like that. The login info is valid for 6 months It's *really* good I am enjoying it a lot -- and learning a ton.
