What the crap is this?

Recommended Posts

I started off thinking this was going to be a sinus infection. Do my usual crap, go the doctor if I have to, whatever.

It's not.

I'm not running a fever (temp's staying around 96 or 97).

I have TONS of drainage (clear).

A good amount of pressure, but not as bad as when I get a sinus infection.

I'm not showing any signs of an infection.

It doesn't seem to be going into my lungs.

I'm rarely coughing, and that's just 'cause of the drainage tickling my throat.

I've tried my usual stuff, and none of it is doing a thing. Ibuprofen keeps my throat from actually hurting.

What the crap is this?

west texas.......... stuff is in the air no matter what time of yr and it travels long distances. About the only time dust and pollens dont bother me is during a heavy snow storm and afterward for a few days around here. Otherwise, Im very sensitive to it. Been more bothered lately this winter too. Some kind of 'pollutant' . It could be pesticides, dust from churned up stuff, miniscule dirt and ash from the SW fires the illegals start up and it comes your way on the storms....... hundreds of miles from where it began. No one really knows what pollutants some business in mexico might be puttin the air either....... it may be getting swept on air currents toward you . Can we just blame monsanto and mega farming and drought? I just dont know but I think its airborn. Also chemtrails upwind or overhead may be irritating because its heavy metals usually that drift down to the ground after several hours to days and move with the winds. Lots of stuff that wasn't god's design is how i feel about all this. Work on increasing immune system!

I normally don't have much of an issue with allergies, which is why I'm confused. However, we have had a storm come through and another due shortly, which might have brought stuff with them from other areas.

If it is allergies, this is going to be bad...when I had allergies in Austin, I was breathing great once they accidentally put me on triple antihistamines (they neglected to tell me to quit taking the others when they gave me a new one).

So, uh, what happens if you overdose on antihistamines?

A few years ago, I got really sick and thought it was just a cold. I missed a few days of work and it never got any better. My nose wasn't running, but a co-worker thought it might be a sinus infection because my head hurt. She gave me some over the counter pills and they kept me going for a few more days until I crashed...HARD! Fever and nausea were the only symptoms. The doctor checked me out and decided that he didn't know what it was, but he gave me antibiotics anyway. That worked! I still don't know what the heck it was...

If this is allergies, it's either something in the air or a dietary allergy. We've been eating a lot more cornbread and milk lately due to being broke, and I know my digestive system hasn't exactly been appreciative.

I think I might just be eating chicken, broccoli, onions, garlic, and tea with honey for the next few days...

Golden Rod? Mountain Man, if we drive down the road and through a field/patch of golden rod, his nose will IMMEDIATELY run like a leaky faucet. Just as soon as we get through it, it eventually clears up. Sometimes people can not react to a environmental contagent, and they've never been allergic to it before. I had a very bad reaction once to chocolate milk, swelled my mouth nearly shut. Haven't had that problem since. Then had a VERY bad "hives" reaction to shrimp several years ago, so I avoid all crustacians now like the plague. That one was a terrible one. Antihistimines (the behind the counter kind that you have to sign for) are often necessary.

Andrea, it's something that is going around. I got it, DH got it and I can name so many others that have it. Ours turned into an infection after 2 weeks and knocked us out. After some heavy antibiotics twice - it became resistant to the first - the infection went away, but the drainage didn't. I started flooding my system with Multi Vit. Vit C and oil of oregano. 2 months later it is almost gone.

My personal theory is it is part of a virus going around, - gimme my  but I also think the CDC has engineered it to panic people into getting the new flu shot they and the doctors have been pushing heavy on TV. It only takes a couple of ginny pigs to pass it around in a public place before it spreads like wild fire. Snowbird season brought it here and I have noticed it in the oncology offices with a vengeance. I feel so bad for those people, they already have enough to deal with.

Allegra seems to work much, much better than Zyrtec for this one.

I took it last night, and when my husband came in an hour or two later, I had to do a "Look, honey!" and inhale through my nose. Still a bit sniffly, but I *could* inhale through my nose. He was impressed.

I didn't wake up at 3am with a sore throat. I woke up with a sore throat around 8am, but I could still breathe through my nose. I took Allegra, ibuprofen, and Sudafed. Hopefully I can survive the day without Benadryl, but the Allegra is definitely helping a LOT.

I know I'm using it more than they say I should, but I've accidentally been put on triple prescription antihistamines before without a problem, so I'm not too terribly worried about it.

One of the sites I'm on is so pro-vaccine that they basically call you a murderer if you say you're not getting it and you're physically able to. If you get the flu after you got the vaccine? Oh, it would have been worse if you hadn't gotten it. They're bugging the crap out of me. Every single person on there who have reported getting the flu...had the flu shot.

I seem to have something similar. Not tons of sinus drainage, but a little that is clear. Then, every morning I wake to sinus pain.

Trying Allegra instead of Zyrtec, too. I take it every day. I saw an ENT specialist. He is totally puzzled buy this. Tried Mucinex, but no difference.

I did have a couple sinus infections. One just before Christmas.

I am supposed to do a sinus wash every day. Use salt and a drop of baby shampoo in it. We tried FloNase instead of Nasacort. Did not make a difference which one I use.

Seems this is worse at night once I lay down. A little cough once in a while, but not bad.

I should get oregano oil. I have some blend I am trying called On Guard from DoTerra. Just got it a couple days ago. My dd said I should get one called Breathe.

Oh, and it does help in the mornings to rub some diluted peppermint and lavendar oil on my face over my sinuses. Still, I am TIRED of this !!!

The ENT doctor said it could be a new allergy. Interesting you have the same sort of thing going on.

I was fine for 10 years. I had sinus surgery back then. Same doctor I am seeing now. Then all of a sudden, here I go again with sinus infections and this horrid pain every day.

This winter hasn't relented for allergies for me. Even For DH. He usually just needs the allergy meds during peak allergy season, not the winter. He's still taking them everyday.

I have been taking pau d arco and that's helping some. I know that's helpful for my allergies in the past.

  • 2 months later...

Second round of "allergies" hitting Central TX.

I've tried everything: Allegra, Zyrtec, Cleratin...

Lady at the health food store suggested Stinging nettle and I was at a point to try anything. Stinging Nettle worked better than ANYTHING I have ever tried.

I've had a very mild sore throat with very minor congestion on and off for 3 weeks More off than on. . Nothing bad it was just a bit annoying frist thing in the morning .

Yesterday I was in the ER with asthma problems. They told me I had bronchitis and gave me an antiboitic, prednisone, and abrtuail inhaler.

Now I know bronchitis will trigger my asthma but I didn't think I had any symptoms of bronchitis. i still don't have a sore throat or congestion.

I'm still a little wheezy when I get up and do something but the meds are working.

The info the hospital gave me suggested to try the herb Pelagonium sidoides. Too much contact with geraniums can sometimes give me a rash so I'm not going to try this but someone else might find it helpful.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelargonium_sidoides

Pelargonium sidoides is a medicinal plant native to South Africa. Its common names include Umckaloabo and South African Geranium. Root extract of Pelargonium sidoides is used as cold and flu medicine under various brand names including Kaloba, Umcka and Zucol.

Medicinal uses

Studies have suggested that extracts from the plant could be used in treating acute bronchitis,[1][2][3] acute non-GABHS tonsillopharyngitis (sore throat) in children,[4] and the common cold.[5]

A 2008 systematic review of these findings by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that extracts of the plant might be effective in treating adults for acute rhinosinusitis and the common cold in adults, but they noted that this conclusion is not certain. They also wrote that it might be effective in relieving the symptoms of acute bronchitis in adults and children, and also the symptoms of sinusitis in adults.[6]

A 2009 systematic review concluded "There is encouraging evidence from currently available data that P. sidoides is effective compared to placebo for patients with acute bronchitis."[7]

It has been shown to be antimycobacterial with significant antibacterial properties against multi-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains.[8]Gallic acid and its methyl ester present in large amounts in P. sidoides and in its active extracts, were identified as the prominent immunomodulatory principle.[9]

The Pelargonium sidoides extract EPs 7630 is an approved drug for the treatment of acute bronchitis in Germany. Determination of virus-induced cytopathogenic effects and virus titres revealed that EPs 7630 at concentrations up to 100 μg/ml interfered with replication of seasonal influenza A virus strains (H1N1, H3N2), respiratory syncytial virus, human coronavirus, parainfluenza virus, and coxsackie virus but did not affect replication of highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (H5N1), adenovirus, or rhinovirus.[10]

"Pelargonium sidoides extract modulates the production of secretory immunoglobulin A in saliva, both interleukin-15 and interleukin-6 in serum, and interleukin-15 in the nasal mucosa. Secretory immunoglobulin A levels were increased, while levels of IL-15 and IL-6 were decreased. Based on this evidence, we suggest that this herbal medicine can exert a strong modulating influence on the immune response associated with the upper airway mucosa."[11]

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 200 patients concluded "EPs 7630 was shown to be efficacious and safe in the treatment of acute bronchitis in children and adolescents outside the strict indication for antibiotics with patients treated with EPs 7630 perceiving a more favorable course of the disease and a good tolerability as compared with placebo."[12]
