It doesn't really do much to protect you from other people, although it's better than nothing in that regard. The primary point of the mask is that it protects other people from you. That's why they started pushing masks hard when they found out how widespread asymptomatic transmission is. Link to comment

On Saturday health authorities said there were 10,561 new cases, rising by more than 1,000 from Friday's figures. The numbers of people admitted to hospital and intensive care are also increasing. A group of doctors have urged people to avoid private gatherings amid the fresh outbreak. "After the joy of reuniting this summer, it's time to be careful in the private world," the doctors said in a column published in Le Journal du Dimanche on Sunday. "The smaller a room, the more people it contains, the less airy it is, the more you increase the risks." France is one of several European countries to see a surge in new cases. As authorities across the continent eased stringent lockdowns imposed in March to tackle the outbreak, new cases began to creep up in June and jumped significantly in the last month. What's the latest in France? Saturday's figures reported 2,432 people sent to hospital, 75 more than on Friday. Of these, 417 were sent to intensive care, an increase of 28. Officials have now designated 42 regions as "red zones", where virus circulation is active and where stricter mask requirements and gathering restrictions are in force. The health ministry reported 3,904 new cases on Wednesday, a new daily record that brought the total to 142,582. The death toll also rose by 11 to 1,054. A week of overnight curfews and school closures began on Tuesday in 40 "red" areas with the highest infection rates. But health officials are reportedly now recommending a month-long lockdown. The mayors of those four areas warned Mr Netanyahu that they would stop co-operation with authorities if the lockdowns were imposed, while Interior Minister Arye Dery told the prime minister to impose a nationwide lockdown instead. And CO COVID STAT site has been down for nearly a week. I got on tonite. Averaged out the daily numbers from the increase before stats disappeared. Nothing significant in the down time. My next two days are going to be crazy too. Out of state guests and septic repair going on at the same time. ALL this and....I still haven't left our property. Ambergris Posted September 15, 2020 Author Share Posted September 15, 2020 India Now Has More Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Than Any Country Except the U.S. BY SHEIKH SAALIQ AND ANIRUDDHA GHOSAL / AP SEPTEMBER 7, 2020 3:36 AM EDT (NEW DELHI) — India’s increasing coronavirus caseload made the Asian giant the pandemic’s second-worst-hit country behind the United States on Monday as its efforts to head off economic disaster gain urgency. The 90,802 cases added in the past 24 hours pushed India’s total past Brazil with 4.2 million cases. India is now only behind the United States, where more than 6.2 million people have been infected, according to Johns Hopkins University. India’s Health Ministry on Monday also reported 1,016 deaths for a total of 71,642, the third-highest national toll. The world’s second-most populous country with 1.4 billion people, India has been recording the world’s largest daily increases in coronavirus cases for almost a month. Despite over 2 million new cases in the past month and the virus spreading through the country’s smaller towns and villages, the Indian government has continued relaxing restrictions to try and resuscitate the economy. On Monday, the Delhi Metro — a rapid transit system that serves India’s sprawling capital New Delhi and adjoining areas — resumed operations after five months. Only asymptomatic people were allowed to board the chugging trains, with masks, social distancing and temperature checks mandatory. “We are on our way. It’s been 169 days since we’ve seen you!,” the official Twitter account of Delhi Metro tweeted. The capital’s metro train network is India’s largest rapid transport system. Before closing down in March, the packed trains carried an average of 2.6 million passengers daily. The reopening comes after India’s economy shrank faster than any other major nation’s, nearly 24% in the last quarter. India’s economic pain dates to the demonetization of the nation’s currency in 2016 and a hasty rollout of a goods and services tax the next year. But the harsh virus lockdown that started on March 24 further exacerbated the country’s economic woes. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered 1.4 billion Indians to stay indoors, the whole economy shut down within four hours. Millions lost their jobs instantly and tens and thousands of migrant workers, out of money and fearing starvation, poured out of cities and headed back to villages. The unprecedented migration not only hollowed out India’s economy but also spread the virus to the far reaches of the country. Now, as the cases surge, most of the country, except in high-risk areas, has already opened up and authorities say that they have little choice. “While lives are important, livelihoods are equally important,” said Rajesh Bhusan, the top official of India’s federal health ministry at a news briefing last week. Almost 60% of India’s active cases are coming from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state. But infections are also returning to areas that had managed to slow the spread of the virus, offsetting marginal gains. Initially hit hard by the virus, New Delhi had seemed to turn the tide through its aggressive screening for patients. But after reopening steadily, the state has reported a recent surge in cases and fatalities. The reopening of the metro is expected to further worsen the situation, experts fear. The recent surge in cases also highlights the risks of India’s strategy on relying too heavily on rapid tests that screen for antigens or viral proteins. These tests are cheap, yield results in minutes and have allowed India to test over a million patients daily. But they are also less precise and likely to miss infected people, said Dr. Gagandeep Kang, an infectious diseases expert of Christian Medical College at Vellore in southern India. Using a seven-day average graph line, the daily death count fell from more than 2000 a day in April to 456 per day in early July. In August, the seven-day average line rose to over 1000 a day for a couple of weeks and then subsided by a few hundred a day for reasons nobody seems sure of.
