  1. In considering a different climate to live in, we looked at Oregon.....then...backed away s l o w l y...and shut the door quietly. Horrible government despite such a lovely land. ...although water rights in CO have been just as nasty. We can NOW have water catchment from the roofs. Been illegal until recently. MtRider [...looking for that 'hidden valley' somewhere to ride out the waves of insanity coming....arriving..... ]
  2. I hope someone else notices this question....... BUMP MtRider [..yes, HSshe. What did you end up doing and what did you find? ]
  3. Happy Birthday, SueC! How's the new house?? MtRider
  4. How cute! I love old books. Since they are past the copyright expiration and are now in 'public domain' ....they are free! I did have trouble with the one I downloaded. From box on left side, I chose 'Kindle' first and my computer wouldn't recognise the version. It or my computer "has an outdated version". Couldn't figure that out so I tried PDF and it came thru fine. You get photos of the actual book they copied. All pics intact! MtRider
  5. Um....... First, clarify that you ARE talking about oxygen absorbers rather than moisture absorbers. Right? I dehydrate a lot but I've only used MOISTURE absorbers...so I don't know what to expect from oxygen absorbers in dehydrated foods. Another question: Was it a very humid midwest day when you did this? Cuz the air in the jar would have had the same high humidity..... OK...above my pay-grade in science here.... Anyone else figure this out? Once sealed, you don't really want to waste the O2 absorbers by opening your sealed containers but....neither do you want a nightmare when you need those preps. So I'd definitely open and check at least one of your dehydrated containers. If that shows moisture, open them all and get them dry again. You don't want dehydrated stuff to be exposed to moisture for very long at all You can rehydrate if it hasn't been long. [Violet might know more specifically how long would have you into danger from molds, etc] If you have humidity problems, use the silica gel MOISTURE absorbers in your containers for dehydrated goods. I even use it here in very low humidity Colorado. As for oatmeal....wait til someone else with experience answers this. Hopefully others will know why this happened. MtRider [....hope your stuff is ok ]
  6. Thanks, ARby. I didn't know they had articles. Interesting stuff and found 2 recipes for variable-ingredient breakfast dishes. I love recipes that can be altered for various ingredients!!!! MtRider

  8. Second try to post... Sprouts from lamb's quarters? Who knew? EVERYONE should learn to identify lamb's quarters cuz it grows everywhere I've ever lived. Look up the Native American tribes that lived in your area. Find REPUTABLE data on how they survived and what they ate. Make sure you aren't confusing old names. In the wilder regions, those plants might still flourish. EMP in winter? The BIG reason for having AT LEAST six months of food stored. Many of us will be having enough trouble just keeping warm without having to look for food the first weeks/months after any big Hooey. Course...something can happen to your preps..... MtRider [...hoping foraging can be put off til summertime! ]
  9. Love beets. Pickled and otherwise. Also pickled eggs in pickled beet juice. My MIL once ran for the emergency room, thinking she had blood in her urine..... MtRider
  10. I'm rarely in this forum but....it's good therapy! Since so many of you are enduring record-breaking heat [and heart-breaking gardening failure]....mebbe we can laugh at these silly things. I like #3 - always do that in Hawaii! IT'S SO HOT .....the birds have to use potholders to pull the worms out of the ground. .....the trees are whistling for the dogs. .....the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance .....hot water comes from both taps. .....you can make sun tea instantly. .....you learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron. .....the temperature drops below 90 F and you feel a little chilly. .....you discover that in July it only takes two fingers to steer your car. .....you discover that you can get sunburned through your car window. .....you actually burn your hand opening the car door. .....you break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 A.M. .....your biggest motorcycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death"? .....you realize that asphalt has a liquid stage. .....the potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter. .....the cows are giving evaporated milk. .....farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs. 11. Dear Lord, Please open our dear Stephanie's blind eyes that she might see the extremely souuuuuuuuuuuuuthern accent she is blessed with... lolol ((((stephanie)))) ...um, ....gotta vote with Darlene on this one. MtRider
  12. Yes, a good caution. Not just because you don't know them well yet. But also, you don't know if THEY believe in keeping their mouth shut about your preps or their own. They might not think anything about mentioning your prepper status to a half-dozen other folks....one of which has a druggie son.... You get the picture. On the other hand, wow....this really might be the beginning of a great friendship or even a survival group. A good mentor for your DH. At least, good playmates for your kiddos. Take it slow and see how much your values line up on the same side. That's what's going to make or break a close relationship developing with these new folks. MtRider
  13. Nice find! I scored a large doghouse some years ago. It's for my buck goat....the one I don't have yet. But free-and-delivered was such a good price! MtRider [ good things come to those who wait....and wait...and finally.... ]
  14. That's a good idea, Michael! Never thot of it but it would increase comprehension by having audio and visual input! Post-MS, I have great trouble reading non-fiction books. That might help me bridge the brain gap. Thanks! Older folks might use this trick to as processing just naturally slows a bit. MtRider
  15. Some say that a steel mesh is sufficient to create a Faraday Cage..... That's my confusion with the data..... MtRider [....do the techies even know??? ]
  16. Arby, I believe the movie is only covering the first part of the book. [unless part 2 came out] And I really wasn't impressed with how well it conveyed the important concepts. I listened to it on audio....but couldn't easily skip ahead when she kept repeating herself. That final monologue by Gault [i think] was like 45 minutes and I did fast forward that. Sheeeesh! Despite that, I still recommend the book! Speed read until something catches your attention. It isn't any one part of the book. It's the creepy feeling when you realize that the insane scenario she plays out in the book is ACTUALLY HAPPENING TODAY! And how interrelated technology is and how the collapse of one will bring down other industries. MtRider [haven't counted up my books on that list yet... ]
  17. Whew...a lesson in car maintenance and things-that-go-wrong. And in God seeing to it that it came out ok. MtRider [...good luck for your new driver! ]
  18. Welcome back, Jasminegirl!!! You'll find things pretty much as we've always been. A few new folks.... MtRider
  19. Any techie know if a metal gym locker would be a Faraday box? Does it have to be 'grounded'??? It's sitting directly on the basement floor. MtRider [...gets confused with the technical data ]
  20. http://www.loc.gov/today/pr/2012/12-123.html Atlas Shrugged made the list, btw... If anyone hasn't slogged thru that UNEDITED thing....well, it is worth the effort. If Cliff Notes are available, I'd recommend that. Considering today's headlines, this is a book that needs to be read. ...just skip the repeating [and somewhat WEIRD] philosophy parts....we won't tell! But she came out of Russia; their family's business having been 'nationalized'. That's how she got her ideas. But tho it was history for her, it's been a bit prophetic for our era. Unfortunately. This page has the list and a short description of each of the 88 books. It would be fun to see how many of this list we have read. MtRider
  21. With all the hoo-hah that's been going on this spring/summer, DH took over the garden. I'm not gardening off-site at my friend's this year. She's concerned about running out her well with so much to water. Well, we've done some straw and hay bales and transplanted cuke/zuch/kholrabi seedlings. All are doing fine in those. Down in the soil garden- The onion sets are our best crop!!! Other years, onions did not do well. Seeds are a different matter! He's had to replant seeds 3X. Except the reliable ole turnips. [ I sure wish God would have made turnips just a bit more tasty. They're fine occasionally but.... ] DH has finally got some beets coming up. Not full rows tho. The taters in towers and mounded ground are finally taking off and looking a bit more happy. [we are in a none-too-abundant "monsoon season: here and that always helps turn things around.] He did get all the spinach seed to sprout in hay bale on the second try. ....So what was wrong with the first try???? DD and I lifted the tub of chipmunk-chewed lettuce up onto a 5 gal bucket. Now I have frustrated chipmunks and growing lettuce! For the second year in a row, my peas are 6 inches tall. Usually 6 FEET tall. We all LOVE peas. Germination trouble there too...in both bales and ground planting. Glad I didn't try for broccoli this year. Seemed like it was going to be too hot to work well for them. Kholrabi is in partial shade and seems happy tho. We've never had a year where things [EXCEPT CARROTS ] wouldn't even sprout. And way up here, we are not THAT hot. Even tho we've been breaking heat records, it's no where near y'all in midwest, TX, AZ.... So what's up? Now the durned carrots that have to be maintained moist for up to 2 wks until they finally germinate....we've frequently had trouble with them. Anyone have a suggestion for them in an arrid land? Good luck everyone....yes, we need to keep trying. Have to learn how to bob and weave with variable....REDICULOUSLY VARIABLE....weather conditions. So we can still feed ourselves and our families. MtRider
  22. Got it. It comes with color pics too! MtRider [...thanks! }
  23. Glad to have you back, MoE!!!!!! MtRider
