  1. Also blow a fan strongly thru the room WHEN PAINTING. Disperse the pain fumes more quickly even if you might be stirring up particles of dust. If you are just cleaning, it would probably be counter-productive to have the fan going. MtRider [...miserably allergic to dusty, arid CO but thankful not asthma ]
  2. I believe the freezer time is to be sure to kill off any bug thingies. I pop them in just as I do any grain/flour products. Let em freeze a couple days and then let them warm up slowly. Don't completely put them away until they are room temperature. That's true if they are warm from dehydrating or cold from freezer. I use the MOISTURE ABSORBING** packets to make sure the condensation does not cause a problem. You would NOT need freezer time if you are using a OXYGEN ABSORBING** packets tho cuz it does the some thing for the buggies. You would NOT need freezer time if you are dehydrating frozen veggies [like Arby said...and the frozen veggies in huge bags are great - saves you freezer space and no chopping needed ] cuz they've already had the freezer time. Also...you do NOT have to thaw the frozen veggies...just put them on the trays and let them thaw/dry in dehydrator. Just to eliminate confusion: --Moisture Absorbing packets remove moisture for the purpose of preventing mold, fungus...rot. They are reusable if you dry them out in hot sunshine, in dehydrator, or in a very low oven. --Oxygen [sorry, can't ever spell that word! ] Absorbing packets remove the oxygen for the purpose of killing any bugs/larvae by O2 deprivation AND for preventing oxidation. Preventing the oxidation keeps the food fresh much longer. [Think: oxidation process is rusting metal...degrades many things. No oxygen/no rust.] They are NOT reusable cuz they have already sucked up all the O2 they can absorb. [like the tiny packets you find in meat...NOT reusable. Dispose of them.] Different purposes but both important in the preserving of food. MtRider
  3. Praying for you as you honor her this day. MtRider
  4. 1...Yes! PC Kindle ...and an iPod I HOPE DDs will finally show me how to use. 2..nope to both 3...MrsS would be great 4...Prep/survival obviously; sci-fi [not horror/occult-ish ones tho - ick!] ; pioneer/history, DIY, Old Tyme stuff, Classic books, Children's classic books, Christian fiction..... and whatever... Thanks ANM! Sounds like a big job tho... MtRider [...having already 'One Thousand' paper books and 200 Kindle books....but I neeeed more, right? ]
  5. DDs and Grsons and SIL will be here for couple weeks so But likely I'll have to have some down time...down DAY....or two ...and then I'll pop in if I've got any energy/brains. MtRider [fixin' to have me a real good time with family ]
  6. very easy to dehydrate and can be eaten like chips [DON'T eat too many] or crumbled onto yogurt, cereal, ice cream..... Not sure if you could sun-dry down south there tho... MtRider [...bananas USED TO cost that much all the time. ]
  7. That's great news. Usually kicks down the inflamation pretty quickly and gives relief. MtRider <----yes, thank you. I'll have a second piece.
  8. Just as a caution: Are there any veggie leaves that should NOT be eaten? I've heard rhubarb plant leaves are toxic [tho I've got an idiot GOAT that runs straight for them when I graze her]. Beet and turnip greens are traditional sources of nutrition. DH loves them but the turnip greens are a bit strong [bitter] for me. I don't like bitters. Heard of a friend who had lots of radishes and she sliced and fried them with good results. You can grow radishes in a pot in a window. MtRider
  9. Oh Annarchy....so sorry for your loss. If our grief is sometimes a measure of how much we loved the person....it's an honor, in one sort of way, to bear it. Cuz most of us wouldn't...couldn't change the relationship ....back away so it doesn't hurt so bad. So we endure it until time changes it a bit. Til the time comes finally, when the memories are precious and the pain is .....manageable. Until then, hold on... God is near. MtRider
  10. Happy Birthday, Dogmom! MtRider
  11. Shoot...I'm afraid the 'NO dirty fingernails' routine wouldn't work for me. Not the broken up mess mine are always in. MtRider
  12. Yikes! Right you are! But directed into a tub...a hot hose is a good way to take a bath if modern methods are not available. The longer the hose(s), the longer the hot..warm..tepid water runs. MtRider
  13. Awwww....I hope she can get back on the Internet sooooon! We miss her!! Wishing you a Happy Birthday anyway! Pass the cake, Martian! MtRider
  14. Here are some of the sites that I got started with this spring, Midnight. http://mrssurvival.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=45548&st=0#entry377936 Opens up some new possibilities! MtRider
  15. Stealth gardens might include hay bale gardening...soda bottle towers....etc. We're trying some alternatives and ALREADY it's paid off. We had to MOVE the bales to let the well pump truck get in to the well head. Replace water pump [necessities of life!!!]. Then moved bales back to the only flat square footage with adequate sunshine. [ there isn't much square "inch"age that is flat around here so it tends to have multiple uses.] So if you can't find the garden, you can't register the garden.... just sayin'..... MtRider
  16. Good to hear you were missed by the baaaad weather. Are you having fun...besides the hornet thing. MtRider
  17. I'm bumping this up for Katz recent request. We all have our own preferences, food allergies, food likes/dislikes, budgets, and where we are starting from. I think it helps to look over a bunch of different plans and then begin to piece together your own. Tailor-made. Takes some work but we need the knowledge anyway. ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: Some of the plans suggest getting 'a whole bunch of this' and then next month or week getting 'a whole bunch of that'. If it's possible in your weekly/monthly budget, try to get a variety in case the hooey hits fan before you have collected only 'a whole bunch of' one thing. Not always possible if you are trying to save enough for a 25# or 50# bag ]cheaper in bulk]. But just keep the principle in mind. MtRider [...haven't been up in the RURR 'attic' for a while. Got some stuff-of-gold up here! Under the dust of ages... ]
  18. I ran into this article today. Somewhat disturbing but I can see why authors/publishers would find this kind of data useful. BUT only if it's collected in bulk and not individual data. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304870304577490950051438304.html?mod=WSJ_Tech_RIGHTTopCarousel_1 MtRider
  19. Good news for DD. I heard separators are a bear to clean. But...what ya gonna do for a loved one? MtRider
  20. ...well fortunately I have some bags I can experiment with. You've restored hope, Annarchy. We'll see. MtRider
  21. second attempt with faulty computer/Internet YIPPPPPEEEE! (((((Martian))))) Congratulations on Book 2!!! I think I'll wait for Amazon, since my brain is too fried to learn ANYthing new. I doubt I could change toothbrush colors and be able to handle it right now. But a nice calm day reading about our friends in Bystander would be just the ticket! Best of luck!! MtRider
  22. Oh dear, I think I have some bean bag materials too. Welcome back PJ! Good question. So...you can't even grind them and make them usable????? I've heard that they get so super hard cuz you can't let them get so dried out??? Is that true and what can one do about it? If packed properly [how] will that prevent ...er, bean bag syndrom? MtRider [...hate to waste ANYthing! ]
  23. Watching it now..... I knew water on grease made it splatter but whoa.... that was impressive - in a bad way. From Drumrunner's review: I never knew that. Esp. about baking soda. Maybe we should start a fire safety thread in RURR??? Include this? Cuz if Hooey hits fan, we are going to be woefully short of firefighters, firetrucks, slurry planes, etc. Mebbe I don't want to be living in this 'crispy forest' state when that happens. Thinking twice about it this summer.... MtRider
  24. Glad to hear it, Violet! Like Windmorn, I have thot of this but was unsure of the food-safe issues. Good to know this! MtRider
