  1. Ribs and sweet potato and macaroni yesterday. Leftover sweet potato for breakfast. Last night, broiled some marrow bones and put them in the slow cooker with the rib bones, half an onion that was looking sad, some shriveling carrots, five and a half mugs of water, and half a mug of vinegar. Probably going to make stew.

  5. I ordered Three Sisters seed from here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Three-Sisters-Vegetable-Garden-Seed-Packs-Corn-Maize-Squash-Beans-/300837442301?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item460b4f12fd
  6. Peace and comfort.
  7. Our last frost date is St. Patty's, so I'm late with the tomatoes and all. I did spend a chunk of today on the Baker Creek and Southern exposure sites, browsing next year's possibilities.
  8. On Friday afternoon I fell, for the second time this week, and came home early to pick bits of cement out of my hand while I sulked. Looked back over my time for the past two weeks and came to the conclusion that Facebook has become too much of a hobby. It has to go. I don't have that much free time. I had previously deleted the Facebook games, but that's plainly not enough. Just hitting "like" or "hide" on the political postings and trying to keep up with everyone's grandchildren is too much. This week's extraordinary rain caused a 50-year flood, but we got no water in the house. This was an enormous relief, the way that stuff was coming down. Now it's turned cold. We're supposed to have started our tomatoes and peppers a month ago so they could be set out on St Patrick's Day, but it didn't happen. I had blocked out much of this weekend for seed starting, but clearing DX's junk and his friends' junk has to happen first. This past fall was, evidently, a whole lot crazier for them than I had let myself see. A fellow (and his friend with a truck) is supposed to come out Saturday evening to help. It turns out that, following the most recent sneak-in (a week ago Thursday), we no longer own a .22 or any .22 ammunition. This deeply disturbs me. The replacement got added to the "big ticket expense" list, after property tax and new glasses and all. Are we even going to be able to replace them? Even more disturbing is the way the deputy I spoke to about all this just blew me off. My new hives arrive on March 12th. The new bees should arrive around the first of April. The odds of getting my job legislated out of existence have turned against me. Won't know yes or no for a while, possibly not until May 3, but waiting until then to start researching options would be a fool's strategy. Worst case scenario (which is the least likely) would have me out of a job on June 1. Slightly more likely is me losing the job between June 1 and October 1. I'm paying ahead on the mortgage and utilities each month, and I bought three months' worth of flea stuff at this month's vet trip. Living on unemployment benefits while looking for work is an awful lot easier if the mortgage is paid, the electricity is on, and fleas don't keep biting all night long.
  9. I've had difficulty with Amazon ever since my son bought me this new computer. I also can't make it recognize my printer. The plan for Monday includes dropping both the printer and the computer at my computer guy's shop and begging for easy instructions.
  10. I live in a very humid area, so dehydrating takes way more than twice as long as what's stated in any manual I've seen. I dehydrate anyway because we've had as many as nine people living in this 1200 sq ft house and dehydrated food takes up a lot less room than any other form of storage. Also, since it's not instantly nosh-able, for the most part, it tends not to get preyed upon by snackers. Also, if it does get good and dry, it should stay good a long time yet can be thrown into the slow cooker any day. I keep thinking I'll wait until winter and dry things indoors, where the humidity is lower and when the warmth will be a plus for the house, but although the dryer is currently sitting out, taking up counter space, nothing has been put in it since before Christmas. I have blueprints for a huge, huge dehydrator, something that would stand outside in the yard full-time and use a solar trough to force air... Never mind--it's definitely a back-burner project. I have just gotten back into canning after a 40-year hiatus. Hated canning as a kid. Spent too much time working in massive canning operations in a sweltering southern Mississippi kitchen with no air conditioning. Plus, our peaches always tasted alcoholic and the green beans were mush...and so on. I'm canning meat, broth, and concentrated stock because yeast extract (which seems to have replaced clearly labeled MSG on most labels) makes me ill. I expect to branch out into canning soup. Beyond that? Probably tomatoes and sweet fruit. I found I'd rather puree the green beans and dry them, resulting in something I can use to fortify a broth later on, than can them and know that nobody's going to much like the mush that comes out of the can. The freezer is packed with food I expect to be eaten in the next few weeks. I don't wrap things properly for the freezer because I want the food in full view and I want to remind myself how much I lost those times the freezer died (and nobody immediately noticed). My sons' convenience food takes up some room in there, but most of the rest of it is stuff I could can in two days or dry if I had a few weeks available.

  12. I tried it today and found out the working seems to have changed a bit. Select nonfiction and then top 100 free.
  13. 1. Go to Amazon. 2. On the left-hand column, select Kindle. 3. When the heading expands with a menu, select Kindle Books. 4. Look under the big heading Kindle eBooks. There are a series of titles. Select Best Sellers. 5. When it shows you Top 100 Paid, you will see next to that heading an unselected Top 100 Free. Select Top 100 Free. 6. Look at the left-hand column. Select "nonfiction" if you like or just click on the first interesting heading. After you down load all the books under that heading, back up to this page and pick the next interesting heading. Or just start with Advice And How-To and go down the list.
  14. Sounds like a lot of very pleasant Saturdays.
  15. Daylong beekeeping class. Met a friend's mother (expected) and an old friend (very unexpected) and each of them ran into an unexpected friend there.
