  1. homemade noodles are great! Chinese noodles like pulled noodles are simple, and rice noodles are a good alternative to wheat. Eggs are completely optional for most pasta doughs and can be simple vegan meals. I do love a good egg noodle for stroganoff! Hand-pulled noodles (La Mian, 拉面), a foolproof recipe - Red House Spice
  2. Easy White Bean Chicken Chili - Pressure Canning Recipe (homesteadingfamily.com) My recipe has too much dairy to can, but this one would do nicely.
  3. I saw someone making sausage oat patties. We did the vegetarian thing for a few years decades back. This is what i made instead of sausage: 100 Calorie Chickpea patties 30 oz cooked, drained chickpeas 1/2 c cooking liquid 1 1/2 c oats 1 clove garlic salt & pepper Process chickpeas and liquid to paste. Process oats to powder and mix all. Shape into 12 patties. Grease pan and patties. Bake 350F 15m. Flip. Bake 15m. Freezes very well. They are a good substitute texture wise. You can fry them in meat grease for added flavor. Seasonings are highly adjustable and I usually vary it to what else i am cooking.
  4. I actually hate Tabasco sauce because I dont like tobacco peppers. They are all heat and I want some flavor. I prefer cayenne pepper based sauce. Same or more heat, lots of flavor. The brand I can get here is Louisiana. When I lived in MS, there were always several brands to choose from. I do have a strong preference for lee and perrins, but will use something else depending on budget. campbells is 1.25 a can. Aldi is .48 a can. I but aldi. im just going to doctor it anyway and i dont taste a difference. sometimes i even make up a batch 'cream soup mix' and use that. DH has an issue about saltine crackers and they have to be Premium brand. Lipton diet green tea citrus. there is no substitute. i like the flavor, it is low calorie, non carbonated, and stays down. cough drops prefer ricola, but will use halls. DH is super picky about hygiene products and everything is very specific. Cat likes purina cat chow in blue bag. tried lots, he likes that. he is a sweet baby and gets what he wants. cat tax:
  5. I rarely buy named brands. There are a handful of things where i prefer a brand taste, but not many. A1, Margaret holms green beans. Somethings i actively prefer the store brand. I use a lot of store coupons from Kroger, Food Lion, and BJs. I get several things from aldis. I try and stock up when things go on sale. Some things we get from the Indian or Chinese grocery.
  6. DD25, DD13, DD1. My heart overflows with joy. The best moments in life are the simplest. Daughter of my loins and daughter of my heart. They are mine.
  7. Had wrist surgery yesterday. 2 bones and nerve release at wrist and elbow. Nerve block at shoulder hasnt worn off so my entire arm just flops around like a dead fish if i shift wrong. Im hoping it wears off soon. DD13 is going to skip school today to help me. DD25 is going to be here this evening to visit. They are just passing through though so she is leaving later tonight. I see soup in my future.
  8. My best kitchen hack is S hooks. gloves with binder clips and s hooks, all types of dishware. grill stuff, kneading bags, clothes pins, anything.
  9. DH had endodontist this morning, so chased baby till he got home. DD13 got her up and brought her downstairs before she left for school. Paid bills. /sorted out how to pay for wrist surgery next week. After insurance it is going to be just over $5K out of pocket. It was a really bad break. radial and distal needing pins and nerve release. DH came to me and said pandemic or not that huge bag of powdered milk is great. It is land o lakes whole milk powder and baby is drinking it. My preps have holes, but i think we may just work around them with other menus. My house looks like a bomb went off, so im going to attempt to clean and get everyone else to help out.
  10. DD13 did most of the cooking last night with supervision. I just sat and made comments. jasmine rice chicken tikka double batch from 2lb chicken. punjab chickpeas vegetable korma DD13 says she likes chopping meat and wonders how much $ a butcher makes DD1 was too busy stuffing face full of food to say anything. Apparently the baby likes Indian too.
  11. Here I can usually get beans for about $1 to $2 a pound at the grocery. The Indian grocery has them cheaper, and also the more expensive types for less than elsewhere. I highly recommend taking a look at your local ethnic stores. They are also usually family owned small business.
  12. I use mod podge. It is brush on. But I cannot do much of anything with my left hand. I am very right handed. Mod podge is amazing. It comes in different finishes. I use it all the time.
  13. Mother, can you tell me more about that cutting board?
  14. Ive been a homemaker for decades, so ive tried most everything. I used to sew, needlepoint, etc but not so much anymore. I can crochet anything and used to sell items on consignment. I can knit, but im not very good. Tatting is fun. soap and candle making is fun. mostly cold process soap. Scrapbooking and planners are my main hobby these days. I also like to paint and draw. The weekend before i broke my arm the whole family painted rocks. Even DH had fun. I havent had a chance to clear coat them yet b/c broken arm.
  15. Thanks! Those look interesting. My everything bagle is similar but i add dried chives and dont measure.
  16. One trick i do witth tvp is tacos. brown the meat, dont drain. add 1/2 c tvp and stir. add 1/2 c water, stir. add remaining seasonings and water, heat through. The grease makes it taste like hamburger and stretches it.
  17. that is a good idea. i use small mailing labels and just write the dates larger there. i like the color coding.
  18. my bidet plugs into wall and toilet. it heats the water and the seat. its a toilet seat that goes on instead of normal seat. DH fell in love with it a decade ago while in japan so we got him one several years back. worth it for 2020 tp shortage alone. pinnacle has a vodka flavor called whipped. if you like vanilla, this is next level yum. it is very sweet. you can drink it straight.
  19. Saw the specialist yesterday. It is a really bad break. Surgery next tues outpatient. pins, release nerve, and 2 other things. CT today because he thinks a bone underneath may be chipped. It hurts a lot. I am learning how to do things one handed with my non dominant hand. I am very grateful that my preps are diversified and meant to get tasks done rather than to get them done without {insert specific SHIFT}. Useful dominant broken hand preps: pillows to prop my arm on vodka/ oxy to numb the pain popsicles to ice down under the cast husband/ older kids to help easy meals canned or frozen. kid knows how to cook bidet. so much easier. i am only using that bathroom for that feature. its worth going upstairs fire tv ap can be downloaded to phone. talk to type on phone shower wand and chair to avoid cast bottle grippers to help open green tea easy open pill bottles i can pop open with my thumb delivery services. everything i can want just shows up at my door netflix to binge watch. currently doing bridgerton when in office and supernatural when in livingroom. its nice to change up during day. large tote bag to carry all my stuff from one place to another ziplock slider bags for everything from baby snacks to pill bottle bag in tote high chair that is like booster seat and straps to chair. has tray. can be placed on floor. baby can be fed on floor. no lifting. pillows on floor for knees. changing pad on floor. no lifting. scarf sling. looks fashionable, easy to take arm in and out. useful to hold arm close when getting down to floor. loose dresses with little to no sleeves. shall to cover fat arms when going out to dr. appts cups to eat soup and finger foods because forks are hard. She even sat down with me at my desk and helped decorate planner for the week. She also washed my hair. I love my family.
  20. I found a workaround for icing the swollen hand / arm in a cast. Rice in ziploc bag frozen under cast. Cheap long popsicle stuffed down cast. I pull it out and move to a new spot every few minutes.
  21. Went back to ER. Swelling made cast too tight and it was cutting off my circulation. Down to 1 hand typing, so long story short--I got IV drugs, more oxycodone, and a new cast. Sentara is a horrible place. Bon Secours at Harborview is AMAZING! All the staff are kind and wonderful and the ER doc there is the absolute best. I see specialist on monday as it is 2 separate complicated breaks. Thank you for all the kind words. Ambergris, ex FIL had that and the data helped alot. I hope yours does too. prepping note from specialist: slings are bad. super bad. dont use them. prop arm up statue of liberty style or over your head on couch. they cause swelling. slings bad. drugs are good but not NSAIDS if there is to be surgery. no NSAIDS. since i had the liver issue last year, we are limiting tylonal. iv morphine & toradol &delauded. oxycodone orally. i am obviously high as a kite and anything i say between now and surgery should be taken with a grain of salt.
  22. ER said see specialist next day, but he is out of town. His office scheduled me for next monday. I am in a lot of pain and cannot move the arm without picking it up with the other hand. DH told his boss he could either take 2 weeks sick leave or telework and he got put on telework for now. He has plenty of sick leave. This past year has not been good to me. DH says this accident is more redneck than the pool ladder. I slipped on a poptart container the baby pulled out of the pantry.
  23. Slipped and fell this morning. Broke my right wrist badly. Spent all day at ER. I will need surgery as it is a bad break.
  24. I think some of prepping is mindset. Dont want to eat leftover peeps? kabobs. Don't like spam? Its elephants. Peanut butter and jelly ....again? Its peanut butter Penguins. Making food interesting can help with food fatigue and encourage people to a) eat the food and b) help you make the food. Some people can get on with the mindset 'this sucks but it is what we have to do.' Some people cannot. You can usually tell who in your family needs a bit of extra help to get in a mindset where what needs to happen...happens. The key is to figure out how to encourage them.
