  1. I was just trying to decide how to use some beans yesterday.
  2. Random Casserole to use up leftovers after a long day: Boil water and add remainder bag of chicken tortellini (*10oz). drain. Grease small casserole dish and put tortellini in it. top with remainder jar of marinara in fridge. About 1/3 jar. Open a jar of meat sauce marinara and add enough to just cover pasta. Layer with remainder of ricotta dip mix from earlier in week (ricotta, cream cheese, honey feta mixed together) Pour over remainder jar of new sauce. Top with remainder bag of shred cheese (mac & cheese blend cheddar flavor about 4oz left) Top with provolone cheese enough to cover casserole (4 slices, 1 torn in half) Bake 350F 30m Everyone loved it. We called it a lasagna type dish. DD13 said '5 stars on yelp' lol.
  3. DD13 and I left the baby with DH and had a girl's afternoon for the first time in years. We went and saw the movie Dog (which had more drugs in it than I was expecting for PG13 :/ but was otherwise good.) Then we went to Panara for a late lunch. Cheddar broccoli soup for me and a turkey bravo sandwich for her. I got her a chocolate croissant for dessert. mmmm. 10/10 as per kid. Afterwards we went to Michael's so she could get a new sketchbook. Half the isles were empty and they stopped carrying almost everything I was interested in. It was horrible. Half the store was cricut vinal or ribbon. The other half was basically home decor/art supplies. There were almost no stickers and only a 4ft section of scrapbook stuff and about 3ft of mostly empty planner shelf. I've been into planners and papercrafting for over 30 years. This made me quite sad. Gas is up to over $4 at the gas station at the end of our neighborhood.
  4. My mom has this weird throat thing for the last few years where it closes up and she cannot swallow. She has to have a medical procedure every six months or so where they put a balloon down her throat to let her eat again. When it is acting up, she was living on broth and yogurt. I told her to try baby food. It worked and she can swallow it. It isn't bad heated or chilled depending on what it is. The apple & prune one is pretty good. My aunt had the best cake recipe that used baby food: Linda's Plum Cake 2 jars plum baby food 3 eggs 2 c sugar 2 c flour 1 c oil 1 t cloves 1 t cinnamon 1 c pecans Mix all and Bake 350F 45M. She usually made it as a Bundt cake, but I think she did a layer cake with lemon cream cheese icing sometimes. We eat so many pickles. I think we go through about a gallon a month. Sometimes I cut them in half, hollow them a bit and use them as the 'bread' for a sandwich.
  5. Because i am cheap frugal, I only buy gallon and half gallon whole dill pickles. Then I chop them up into mason jars in spears, circles, and flat sandwich slices. We are picky though I only buy Mt. Olive. Sometimes DH tosses in a hot pepper to make them more spicy.
  6. Beechnut baby food jars are great for storing seeds. I tended to buy that brand just for the jar.
  7. World's easiest rice that even small kids can make. This is usually what I start kids off 'cooking' when they are learning kitchen skills. Microwave rice 1c rice 2c water Put rice and water in a glass bowl and microwave 10m. Stir. Microwave another 10m. Add salt, pepper, butter to taste.
  8. I've been having a problem finding whole wheat flour for a reasonable price. I made an order from Amazon fresh because they had whole wheat flour for 2.29 for 5#. So I ordered 6 bags. Filled the rest of the order with a few needed items like heavy cream, apple juice, diapers, water chestnuts (.89 ea) etc. I ordered it about 9am and it was here by 2p. I tipped the driver, but the delivery etc was free since I ordered over $35. I'd say it was worth it not to deal with gas and getting the baby out of the house. Also the cheapest i've found whole wheat flour elsewhere was 5.99 for 5# so definitely worth it. While I was bringing the bags in, the cat got out. While I was chasing down the cat, the baby got loose in the house. Apparently the cat water fountain is a hand washing station now. Today I got in my cardio.

    Funnies

Found an old memory from DD13s 4th grade. It reads: " Houses would be more tenologic if that is a word. There would be more technology and its probably how I die. " Attached pic of house with error message. This about sums up modern house gadgets for me.
  10. I have successfully cooked beans 5+ years old in a pressure cooker. You don't even have to soak them. Beans , water, seasonings in the insta pot (or old fashioned pressure cooker) takes about 25-30m + pressure time, so usually around an hour.
  11. Creamy Tortellini soup 2 cans cream of chicken soup 1 can cream of mushroom soup 6 cups milk 2 cups water 2t chicken bullion 1/2 c frozen chopped carrots 1/3c frozen chopped celery 1 can chicken Garlic powder and Italian seasoning to taste 8-10 oz chicken tortellini Mix all but pasta and heat through. Add pasta and cook until done. Serve hot.
  12. If you are asking about testing blood sugar after eating sourdough vs eating white or whole wheat...... All 3 of them make my BS go up equally. I cannot speak for other people, but I have a decade of testing that says it doesn't matter for me.
  13. I had GI surgery back in 2016. I'm missing a lot of my stomach and most of my intestine. Carbs are tricky for me. I can eat a small amount of many things, but I cannot even lick ice cream or I vomit. I'm a huge baker and I've made bread for a long time. I've always loved sourdough. Ciabatta is one of my favorites. I have found that my tolerance has more to do with density and cooked. Pizza is a no-no unless it is made on pre toasted thin bread. In general sourdough doesn't sit any better than yeast or white bread. Quick breads (corn bread, muffins, banana bread) sit better than yeast bread. Cake is a big no-no as I always regret it. Tortillas and Naan do not cause me very many issues even though naan has yeast. Cream of wheat is fine as long as it has low sugar. I guess for me, digesting wheat is more about lower sugar, finer crumb, and being well done.
  14. We have a data transfer cable, and I have used it with good luck. I have also had DH pull the hard drive out of the old machine and pop it into an empty slot in the new machine. One time, I had a damaged drive and I put it in a ziplock bag in the freezer for a few hours, then had him connect it to an empty slot where I just used windows explorer to move it to the good drive. I managed to salvage 99% of my data from it that way.
  15. Crazy week. The heat went out and we are waiting on a new part to fix it. We are using the fireplace in the meantime. One of the freezers stopped working but it is under warranty. The guy is here to fix it today. I'm lucky that I'd been rotating pantry enough to squeeze everything into the other freezers. Today I rearranged my office and moved my cookbooks into this room.
  16. Where was your grandmother's side from going back? That may help narrow it down. ex: Mine came over from Ireland so a lot of things she said tend to have celtic roots.
  17. I've been watching a lot of Korean Drama on netflix. I just finished a series, The Affection of the King. It was a serial period piece about the King actually being a woman in disguise. It was really good.
  18. It seems like you blink and they are grown. Our oldest turns 25 this month. Every time one ages out I have another heh. 4 DDs: 25, 18, 13, 1. This one is the last though. After her we will have to rely on grandkids.
  19. We haven't had cable for about 6 years. We only had it before because MIL wanted it. Last year we got 2 firesticks. We've always had netflix. Over the lockdowns, we added in Disney + (I'd say for the baby but it was because of The Mandalorian for DH), paramount +, HBO, and Noggin. I only wanted Noggin the rest were all for DH. Also we have Amazon Prime so prime video. The individual Channels run about $20 a month total and the netflix is 17, amazon $100 a year (we order a LOT so the free shipping alone is worth it to us.) still cheaper than cable. I forgot. I made him get showtime so I could watch the new Dexter. so $25 a month.
  20. I am lazy. DH and I have an agreement that the grill is outside so it is his domain. I prep and he grills. Last night we had steak marinated in Italian dressing overnight (my go-to lazy marinade.) I did not want to mess with vegetables, so I dumped a bag of frozen veggies into a cast iron skillet, drizzled with oil, salt and pepper. Over to the grill with that. No longer my problem. Cast iron is the best.
  21. Chicken Fried Steak Marinade: 2c buttermilk from powder 2 eggs from powder 1 t each salt and pepper 1 T hot sauce enough water to make up buttermilk/eggs Seasoned flour: 1 1/2 c flour 1/4 c cornstarch 1 T cajun seasoning Marinade cube steaks overnight in this. Dredge in seasoned flour and fry in 1" of oil 3-4m per side. Do not crowd pan. Gravy: Pour off oil, add 1/3c back to skillet and add 1/3c flour from dredging. Make a roux and add 2c milk. Salt and pepper to taste. Make mashed potatoes with flakes and milk (from powdered) according to directions. leave out fat & season. When warm, add half a stick of butter, 1/4 container cream cheese, salt and pepper. Heat through. Serve with gravy. The brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes are baby approved. That is a sprout she is putting in her mouth.
  22. The Hawaiian Rolls I made in September and the collard soup from New years: One bun is missing because it got taste tested before I could snap a pic.
  23. I didn't want to clutter the Mexican food thread so i'm posting this here. My mom is in MS and they still had fresh herbs growing outside and in the sunroom over christmas. I was put in charge of 'making the food look good' and this is what I came up with. Herbs are tasty and pretty too.
