  1. DH had endodontist this morning, so chased baby till he got home. DD13 got her up and brought her downstairs before she left for school. Paid bills. /sorted out how to pay for wrist surgery next week. After insurance it is going to be just over $5K out of pocket. It was a really bad break. radial and distal needing pins and nerve release. DH came to me and said pandemic or not that huge bag of powdered milk is great. It is land o lakes whole milk powder and baby is drinking it. My preps have holes, but i think we may just work around them with other menus. My house looks like a bomb went off, so im going to attempt to clean and get everyone else to help out.
  2. DD13 did most of the cooking last night with supervision. I just sat and made comments. jasmine rice chicken tikka double batch from 2lb chicken. punjab chickpeas vegetable korma DD13 says she likes chopping meat and wonders how much $ a butcher makes DD1 was too busy stuffing face full of food to say anything. Apparently the baby likes Indian too.
  3. Here I can usually get beans for about $1 to $2 a pound at the grocery. The Indian grocery has them cheaper, and also the more expensive types for less than elsewhere. I highly recommend taking a look at your local ethnic stores. They are also usually family owned small business.
  4. I use mod podge. It is brush on. But I cannot do much of anything with my left hand. I am very right handed. Mod podge is amazing. It comes in different finishes. I use it all the time.
  5. Mother, can you tell me more about that cutting board?
  6. Ive been a homemaker for decades, so ive tried most everything. I used to sew, needlepoint, etc but not so much anymore. I can crochet anything and used to sell items on consignment. I can knit, but im not very good. Tatting is fun. soap and candle making is fun. mostly cold process soap. Scrapbooking and planners are my main hobby these days. I also like to paint and draw. The weekend before i broke my arm the whole family painted rocks. Even DH had fun. I havent had a chance to clear coat them yet b/c broken arm.
  7. Thanks! Those look interesting. My everything bagle is similar but i add dried chives and dont measure.
  8. One trick i do witth tvp is tacos. brown the meat, dont drain. add 1/2 c tvp and stir. add 1/2 c water, stir. add remaining seasonings and water, heat through. The grease makes it taste like hamburger and stretches it.
  9. that is a good idea. i use small mailing labels and just write the dates larger there. i like the color coding.
  10. my bidet plugs into wall and toilet. it heats the water and the seat. its a toilet seat that goes on instead of normal seat. DH fell in love with it a decade ago while in japan so we got him one several years back. worth it for 2020 tp shortage alone. pinnacle has a vodka flavor called whipped. if you like vanilla, this is next level yum. it is very sweet. you can drink it straight.
  11. Saw the specialist yesterday. It is a really bad break. Surgery next tues outpatient. pins, release nerve, and 2 other things. CT today because he thinks a bone underneath may be chipped. It hurts a lot. I am learning how to do things one handed with my non dominant hand. I am very grateful that my preps are diversified and meant to get tasks done rather than to get them done without {insert specific SHIFT}. Useful dominant broken hand preps: pillows to prop my arm on vodka/ oxy to numb the pain popsicles to ice down under the cast husband/ older kids to help easy meals canned or frozen. kid knows how to cook bidet. so much easier. i am only using that bathroom for that feature. its worth going upstairs fire tv ap can be downloaded to phone. talk to type on phone shower wand and chair to avoid cast bottle grippers to help open green tea easy open pill bottles i can pop open with my thumb delivery services. everything i can want just shows up at my door netflix to binge watch. currently doing bridgerton when in office and supernatural when in livingroom. its nice to change up during day. large tote bag to carry all my stuff from one place to another ziplock slider bags for everything from baby snacks to pill bottle bag in tote high chair that is like booster seat and straps to chair. has tray. can be placed on floor. baby can be fed on floor. no lifting. pillows on floor for knees. changing pad on floor. no lifting. scarf sling. looks fashionable, easy to take arm in and out. useful to hold arm close when getting down to floor. loose dresses with little to no sleeves. shall to cover fat arms when going out to dr. appts cups to eat soup and finger foods because forks are hard. DD1 does better than my left hand. laxitive/ prune juice, etc because oxy has side effects Serious thanks to DH who is on telework to help me this week. DD13 is doing a lot of cooking and cleaning. She even sat down with me at my desk and helped decorate planner for the week. She also washed my hair. I love my family.
  12. I found a workaround for icing the swollen hand / arm in a cast. Rice in ziploc bag frozen under cast. Cheap long popsicle stuffed down cast. I pull it out and move to a new spot every few minutes.
  13. Went back to ER. Swelling made cast too tight and it was cutting off my circulation. Down to 1 hand typing, so long story short--I got IV drugs, more oxycodone, and a new cast. Sentara is a horrible place. Bon Secours at Harborview is AMAZING! All the staff are kind and wonderful and the ER doc there is the absolute best. I see specialist on monday as it is 2 separate complicated breaks. Thank you for all the kind words. Ambergris, ex FIL had that and the data helped alot. I hope yours does too. prepping note from specialist: slings are bad. super bad. dont use them. prop arm up statue of liberty style or over your head on couch. they cause swelling. slings bad. drugs are good but not NSAIDS if there is to be surgery. no NSAIDS. since i had the liver issue last year, we are limiting tylonal. iv morphine & toradol &delauded. oxycodone orally. i am obviously high as a kite and anything i say between now and surgery should be taken with a grain of salt.
  14. ER said see specialist next day, but he is out of town. His office scheduled me for next monday. I am in a lot of pain and cannot move the arm without picking it up with the other hand. DH told his boss he could either take 2 weeks sick leave or telework and he got put on telework for now. He has plenty of sick leave. This past year has not been good to me. DH says this accident is more redneck than the pool ladder. I slipped on a poptart container the baby pulled out of the pantry.
  15. Slipped and fell this morning. Broke my right wrist badly. Spent all day at ER. I will need surgery as it is a bad break.
  16. I think some of prepping is mindset. Dont want to eat leftover peeps? kabobs. Don't like spam? Its elephants. Peanut butter and jelly ....again? Its peanut butter Penguins. Making food interesting can help with food fatigue and encourage people to a) eat the food and b) help you make the food. Some people can get on with the mindset 'this sucks but it is what we have to do.' Some people cannot. You can usually tell who in your family needs a bit of extra help to get in a mindset where what needs to happen...happens. The key is to figure out how to encourage them.
  17. Pasta squid are a thing too. poke uncooked spaghetti into a 1" hot dog section and boil the whole thing. Kids LOVE this. More picky eater ideas from my kids: 1. cut shapes out of carrots or other veggies with small cutters. Cut carrots on diagonal to get big pieces then press out shapes. Rest of the bits can be chopped up for soup/freezer. 2. Toothpicks can make lunch fun 3 & 4 Personalize lunchboxes by stamping on them then go over the stamp with fabric paint. Fun lunchboxes make kids want to use them. 5, 6, 7 Sandwich cutters are amazing. They are cheap, square and press into the sandwich. If you have leftover bits, just cut into big chunks at the break points and put those in with the shape. I have elephant, cat, puzzle, and penguin cutters. 8. Carrots can be fun. The divided plastic containers are a godsend. You can put ranch or yogurt in them. I have smaller containers that I can sit down in them too so it is tight and doesn't spill. 9. Leftover easter peep kabobs. Somehow we always end up with peeps on the verge of stale and no one will eat them. Kabobs fixed that. 10. I cannot seem to find King Cake up here, so I usually make one when wanted. One of the kids did the frosting for this one so it looks like I had a lot of 'help'
  18. Naan is India Indian. They also make roti and Paratha. Afghanistan has noni afghani. It has egg, does not use yogurt, and much less yeast. It is cooked on a tandoor similar to Naan. You can usually cheat the tandoor by using cast iron. You can also hold the bread to the flame on the stove for a second to get the customary black dots Naan or other type breads have. This is a sample recipe of noni afghani: Noni Afghani (Afghan Bread) Recipe - Food.com
  19. While I'm at it....I found a few other delicious things I made. I don't cook as much as I used to; I need to treat the husband more. 1. Pineapple upside down cake made in a cast iron skillet with pecans instead of cherries. 2. Seitan loaf. This was part of a vegan thanksgiving. Its basically wheat gluten washed till the starch is gone then mixed with flavoring and baked. I served it with a mushroom gravy. 3. My 2 most used cookie recipes. I make lots of variants of these 2. 4. Polenta shapes. Halloween cookie cutter to polenta. Super easy to make. Cornmeal and water baked on top of stove till thick. Pour into greased dish and bake a bit, allow to cool and press out shapes. I usually add cheese during original stovetop bake. 5. Pool Cake. Make a cake. Hollow out center and fill with half set jello. Add peach rings and those bear cookies kids love. 6. Polenta just scooped out of pot and hotdogs cut into octopus with a dot of polenta for eyes. Kid favorite. Cut the hotdog before you boil it --also works with sausages.
  20. I love bread. I'm sad that I can't eat it like I used too. I still take a nibble here and there. It is a running joke that my husband married me for my brown bread rolls. I was looking at some old pictures and thought I'd share a few bread ideas: 1. homemade christmas gifts. Cordial, lavender bath salts, peanut butter fudge made with sugar (no scm here), White chocolate cookies, apple tarts, cranberry braids, spiced pecans, caramel frosting in jars, brown bread wrapped behind caramel. Orange clove balls mixed in. 2. close up of cranberry braids. Its just a sweet dough with cranberry jam braided into the shaping and baked. 3. Turkey Lurkey bread. Its just white bread dough shaped into a turkey, painted with food coloring and a brush. Egg wash and bake. 4. My most used bread machine recipes 5. Braided cornucopia for Thanksgiving. Shape a cone of crumpled aluminum foil. Wrap bread dough around it to form horn. Braid a section and wrap around front. Bake. Cool. Pull out foil. Fill with veggies and serve with hummus.
  21. Yep. This. Anytime you add anything to bread, it is best to add it after the first rising. My old flour sifter usually is fine enough to catch brand from fresh flour. Yours may be good for that. I clean sift into one bowl then dump the bran into another.
  22. Tortillas and Naan are super easy. Tortilla 2c Masa (cornmeal) 1 T oil 1/2 t salt 1 1/2 c warm water more as needed Combine all. Stir to form ball. Add more water as needed to get play-doh consistency. Kneed until it is elastic and 'cleans' bowl as you move it around. Wet hands as needed if they become sticky. This takes forever. I use my mixer dough hook. Divide into 10 balls and set aside with a damp cloth over for 10-30m. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. Shape tortillas by putting a piece of wax paper over dough and flattening it with a cast iron skillet. Don't roll it out. Cook about 2m per side as you would a pancake. Naan 2 t yeast 1 t sugar 1/2 c warm water 1/4 c oil 1 egg 1/2 c yogurt 2 1/4 c flour 1/2 t salt Combine yeast, sugar, water and let sit 5-10m till yeast foams. Add oil, yogurt, egg. Stir well. Combine Flour and salt. Add in yeast mixture and mix for a few minutes in mixer or by hand until dough ball forms. Add more flour if it is too wet. It should be soft but not sticky. Allow to rise in an oiled bowl. I stick mine in an oven I preheated to 200F and then cut off. It should double within 30-60m. Divide into 8 balls. Heat about 1 t oil in a skillet on medium high. Roll out balls to about 1/3" thick and 5" long. Oval or round doesn't matter. Fry for 1m per side. Brush with butter and garnish with parsley. *notes. I usually add garlic to the dough and top because I like garlic. These will also puff like pita bread and I often eat them like you would pita.
  23. I use my insta pot for beans. pretty much just beans. it is a huge time saver. 30m setting for most and no soaking. They are done in about an hour with the pressurizing, cooking, and release.
  24. I use mine several times a week. I use the dough function a lot. But....I can't eat much bread because of the GI issues. My DH and kids chow down though.
